I must say I have not thought very much to the question, but it seems to me
having both solutions in the code could be confusing for users for no actual
benefit, and this is a case where the actual merits of either solution can
be discussed.

Speaking only for myself, and about something actually different, I must say
I am a bit annoyed when I must write "-c png -f image2 - | display" instead
of just "-f png -". I suspect this will lead to a similar issue.
