Attached is a patch to add support for Apple Video encoding (rpza). The quality settings are defined at compile time right now since I wasn't really sure how to map ffmpeg's numerous video options to the capabilities of rpza. It supports all rpza encoding opcodes but the 4-color block encoding doesn't try to do multiblock runs yet. -Todd

[RFC] Support building universal binaries of FFmpeg on Darwin

Hi, Attached below is an initial patch to allow building a universal, or fat, binary of FFmpeg on Darwin 8.0 and later using GCC 4.0. The generated binary will contain 4 architectures: G3, G4, G5 and x86. Having the three PowerPC architectures allows GCC to tune for the specified CPU, and possibly vectorize code. The configure script needed a lot of hackery to defer detection of e.g. AltiVec to compile-time. Source code changes mainly involve ensuring that files in libavcodec/ppc and libavcodec/i386 compile with both PPC and x86 compilers. A few cases where CONFIG_DARWIN was incorrectly assumed to mean Motorola AltiVec syntax was also fixed. However, I ran into a major issue: The Darwin assembler is an old version of GNU as, and it does not support the i386 syntax used in FFmpeg. I believe the issues boil down to: - The asm macro syntax used in Darwin[1] is different from the currently used syntax. It appears to not support named arguments and use ".endmacro" instead of ".endm". Perhaps using C macros would be better? (In i386/fdct_mmx.c) - The .balign pseudo-op doesn't exist. The best substitute I could find was .align[2]. (In i386/dsputil_mmx.c) - I get a lot of errors about "Junk character 47 (/)". I don't know what that means :/ (In i386/simple_idct_mmx.c) I don't know x86 assembly, so I have no idea how to fix this. I was hoping someone else might be able to help. Hi do or did the ffserver regression tests work recently? work here is defined as producing the same checksums on most systems if yes then ill enable them, if no ill cvs remove ffserver -- Michael

This then receives data from the 'raw' file read in raw.c. Is this correct? I thought av_read_frame() should read an entire frame of data, so I'm not clear how this is now possible. Are you saying that I should use the boolean in avcodec_decode_video() because the frame boundaries will now be split across packets? Please can you elaborate. av_seek_frame() units

Hi, how would I find the correct timestamp to pass to av_seek_frame() if I know the number of the frame I want to seek to? I tried (AVStream.r_frame_rate/frames)*AV_TIME_BASE but that doesn't appear to work. TIA --Ian

Subtitle patches

Hi, I've attache a couple of subtitle decoder patches - subs.diff fixes a couple of minor bugs in my DVB subtitle decoder, and also fixes a few problems in the DVD decoder (the palette entries were being read back-to-front, and the timing conversions were slighly off). I've also added an extra field to the AVSubtitleRect structure to pass the DVD clut mappings out, so that an application with access to the IFO files can display the correct colours. ffplay.diff patches ffplay to be able to display subtitles. When testing these, I found a couple of issues that I'm not sure how to resolve: - On the Lord of The Rings extended DVDs, the subtitles for the director's commentary tracks fade in and out by giving several SET_CONTR commands. The dvdsub decoder just takes the last alpha values, so the subtitles are invisible. To properly decode these subtitles, av_decode_subtitle needs to be able to return multiple AVSubtitles for one call. I think the best way to implement this is probably to change the API so that instead of passing an AVSubtitle* to the function, pass an AVSubtitle** and let the decoder allocate an array of AVSubtitles and return the number of pages in got_subtitles - Different formats use different coordinate systems - DVB subtitles are based on a 720x576 frame regardless of video resolution, while DVD subtitles are given (I think) in video coordinates (does anyone have a sub-D1 DVD to test this on?). Also DVD subtitles for letterboxed display are formatted to put the text into the black bars - they're meant to be scaled separately to the video. Currently there's no way to support this in the AVSubtitle struct. What would be the best way to represent this? Ian

Hi the current sf bug tracker is checked far too rarely and pretty much just by me, we should either * kill it and just use the mailinglist * change its config so every bug gets sent to ffmpeg-devel * create a ffmpeg-bugs ML and change the bug trackers config so every bug gets sent to it * switch to a different bug tracker but it must have a working email & web interface and be intuitive (= NOT bugzilla) and config it so bugs get sent to ffmpeg-devel/bugs comments, suggestions, flames, ...? -- Michael

ratecontrol advice

Hi all, I'm trying to use libavcodec to 1-pass encode an h.263 stream which has limits on both the maximum size-per-picture and total datarate. I can't work out what the right way is to respect both limitations using the ratecontrol settings, whilst maintaining the best possible QP for any given frame (so long as it doesn't end up larger than X bytes - or push the total datarate for over Y kbits/s). I assume I can do this with a custom rc_eq formula and/or adjusting qcompress - but I can't see an obvious formula for capping the picture-size. Alternatively, is there another way to force ffmpeg to adjust the qp so that pictures are never larger than a given size? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated indeed :) cheers; Matthew
