[patch] lib64 in libxxx.pc
by seandarcy2＠gmail.com 23 Dec '06

23 Dec '06

configure creates the libdir in the .pc files with: libdir=\${exec_prefix}/lib which causes a problem for those like me who have the ffmpeg libs in /usr/lib64. configure does know the libdir - it's $libdir. So this patch sets the libdir using it: libdir=$libdir I didn't touch the libxxxxx-uninstalled.pc files since I couldn't figure out what there used for. sean

'-bt 0' option causes an Assertion failure of ffmpeg
by borat＠subsense.com 22 Dec '06

Hello, I just want to bring to your attention that executing ffmpeg -i in.mpeg -bt 0 out.mpeg ^^^^^ terminates ffmpeg in an unusual way. The full output is: ##### start ##### FFmpeg version SVN-r6218, Copyright (c) 2000-2004 Fabrice Bellard configuration: --enable-mp3lame --enable-libogg --enable-vorbis --enable-faad --enable-faac --enable-xvid --enable-x264 --enable-mingw32 --enable-a52 --enable-dts --enable-pp --enable-gpl --enable-memalign-hack --enable-amr_nb --enable-amr_wb --enable-swscaler --enable-avisynth libavutil version: 49.0.0 libavcodec version: 51.14.0 libavformat version: 50.5.0 built on Sep 10 2006 21:00:18, gcc: 4.0.3 Input #0, mpeg, from 'in.mpeg': Duration: 00:00:24.5, start: 0.184911, bitrate: 3331 kb/s Stream #0.0[0x1e0]: Video: mpeg2video, yuv420p, 720x480, 9800 kb/s, 29.97 fps(r) Stream #0.1[0x80]: Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, stereo, 192 kb/s Output #0, mpeg, to 'out.mpeg': Stream #0.0: Video: mpeg1video, yuv420p, 720x480, q=2-31, 200 kb/s, 29.97 fps(c) Stream #0.1: Audio: mp2, 48000 Hz, stereo, 64 kb/s Stream mapping: Stream #0.0 -> #0.0 Stream #0.1 -> #0.1 Assertion failed: q>0.0, file ratecontrol.c, line 730 This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. [PATCH] idct8 in Altivec for H.264 decoding
by gpoirier＠mplayerhq.hu 02 Dec '06

02 Dec '06

Hi, Attached patch should provide a 2% decoding speed-up if I do the math right. This patch isn't meant to be merged as it is now, as in addition to adding idct8 routine, it moves TRANSPOSE8 macro to dsputil_altivec.h as this macro is already duplicated in vc1dsp_altivec.c, and mpegvideo_altivec.c. This patch also carries some macros that are useful in Altivec programming. They are taken from x264 project, and I have permission from the author to re-licence them in LGPL. One more thing: if the dst array is 8 or 16 bytes aligned, it should be possible to make the routine even faster. Unfortunately, I can't manage to make an implementation that works. I've left the optimized routines ALTIVEC_STORE_SUM_CLIP_ALIGN8_A (16 bytes aligned *dst) and ALTIVEC_STORE_SUM_CLIP_ALIGN8_B (8 bytes aligned *dst (but _not_ 16 bytes aligned) so ppl can have a look at them and hopefully find what is wrong. As far as I can see, ALTIVEC_STORE_SUM_CLIP_ALIGN8_A works as expected, but ALTIVEC_STORE_SUM_CLIP_ALIGN8_B doesn't (that's really surprising considering how much alike they are). Anyway, comments and tests welcome. Guillaume

[PATCH] VP6 to flv muxing
by banan＠student.ltu.se 30 Nov '06

30 Nov '06

With recent mplayer svn, it is possible to encode vp6 video to avi. Command for that: mencoder inputfile -vf flip -ovc vfw -xvfwopts codec=vp6vfw.dll -lavfopts i_certify_that_my_video_stream_does_not_use_b_frames -of lavf -o out.avi Note that the flip command is needed, the picture is flipped between the diffrent containers. This avi file can then later be remuxed into flv with this command. ffmpeg -i out.avi -vcodec copy test.flv I intend to apply this patch soon. MvH Benjamin Larsson -- "incorrect information" is an oxymoron. Information is, by definition, factual, correct.

calculating optimal bitrates
by karl.h.beckers＠gmx.net 23 Nov '06

23 Nov '06

Hi all, am trying to find an algorithm for determining a good bitrate based on let's say a percentual quality I want to achieve (kinda like when saving jpegs) and would appreciate if anybody could comment on the validity of the lines along which I'm thinking. I thought I already had a tolerable algo and was struck by the fact that even at a 10% quality configured I was getting perfect results (with little movement ....). So, if my frames are 100 x 100, I have 10000 pixels. Let's say I have YUV, then that's 160000 bits per frame, at 10 fps it would be 1600000 bits per second. If I have a gop_size of 50, I have 0.2 intra frames per second, so I need 32000 bits per second for intra frames. Does that mean that at this frame size with a bit rate of 32000 and no movement I will get perfect results? It would then follow that whatever I add to the bitrate is available for b-frames to actually encode movement and the quality achievable with any given bitrate (higher than what's necessary to accomodate the intra frames) depends on the amount of change you have between the intra frames. In other words: There is no way to determine the quality you can achieve with a bitrate from the frame size an gop_size unless you also make an assumption on the degree of change you'll be seeing? TIA, Karl.

[PATCH] Fix for non-GNU sed.
by demo-n＠users.sourceforge.net 13 Nov '06

13 Nov '06

Hi "--disable-decoder=NAME" option of ./configure doesn't work with non-GNU sed programs. Takashi Mochizuki aka MyCometG3 known as an author of mp4vEncoder pointed out it. He concluded that as a result of the investigation, there was a problem in the following function in ./configure script. filter_out(){ pattern="$1" shift echo "$@" | sed "s%\\<$pattern\\>%%g" } According to the info page, \< and \> are a GNU extension. Because Mac OS X uses non-GNU sed, this function doesn't work correctly. Therefore, I made the attached patch. This patch removes the GNU sed dependency on ./configure. filter_out() with it can disregard "oggvorbis_encoder" when the $pattern is "vorbis_encoder". -- demo-n
