FFmpeg at NAB 2024
Hi, FFmpeg will have a booth at the next NAB from April 14th to 17th 2024 in Las Vegas [1]! We reiceived an anonymous corporate sponsorship for the booth, so there are no costs for the FFmpeg project to it (and no obligations, of course). Any FFmpeg developer is welcome to join in and man the booth with me, especially any developers based in the US or other american countries! Share with us your broken workflows, unfulfilled requirements, ideas for enhancements and after show drinks at W4232 [2]! -Thilo [1] https://cloud.e.nabshow.com/2024/ [2] https://nab24.mapyourshow.com/8_0/exhview/?hallID=W&selectedBooth=W4232

This is certainly interesting considering we just had a giant thread about not using or using SPI, with multiple people accused of having corporate interests. - Derek

I noticed FFmpeg is on the NAB floor plan. This implies FFmpeg has signed a contract with NAB, as to my knowledge, you are not on the floor plan without doing that. There is one slight problem here... FFmpeg does not have a legal entity in which such a contract could have been signed. So who signed? The "anonymous" corproate entity, on behalf of FFmpeg, with out our consent? Pardon my French, but this is sketchy as all fuck. - Derek

In addition, the remaining costs of the booth, which in my experience total around twice as much as the floor space itself need to be paid by this corporate contributor. I would not find it acceptable for SPI to pay these costs. I do not feel donors would want their money spent on a corporate show in Las Vegas. Also no plan has been provided about who will actually be present on the booth. Ragards, Kieran Kunhya

all SPI refunds must be posted to the mailing list and approved by the FFmpeg community. I have 0 clue if anything like this will be posted by anyone. But if its not, there is no way SPI can pay it and if it is then everyone has an oppertunity to object. If theres no consensus to fund something then stefano and me will not approve it. And SPI will not pay it. So if a few people are against it and they state that publically in the corresponding REFUND thread then there is NO way SPI can pay it I cannot comment on anything else thx [...] -- Michael GnuPG fingerprint: 9FF2128B147EF6730BADF133611EC787040B0FAB If a bugfix only changes things apparently unrelated to the bug with no further explanation, that is a good sign that the bugfix is wrong.

To be clear I have no issue with reimbursements for small booths at SCALE, LinuxTAG, FOSDEM etc. But NAB is a big corporate show with very large costs for graphics, furniture, union builders etc (put a number in your head and add two zeroes to the end) and I don't feel donors would want their money spent on this. Adding to the list of wtf NAB things: https://twitter.com/JanetGrecoBP/status/1773342135514779700 I will be with #GPAC on the #FFMPEG stand #W4232 during #NABShow, from 13-17th April in Las Vegas. If you're interested in cutting-edge #openSource #ultramedia video streaming & next-gen multimedia transcoding, packaging & delivery software, do stop by or DM to meet! @wearegpac (Janet does PR/markey and stuff for Motion Spell, GPAC's commercial arm.) I am sure this email will continue the long trend of emails in this thread being routed to Thilo's /dev/null. - Derek

Hi Thilo, Does this sponsorship include the cost of building, furniture, graphics, booth design etc? Having done booths for a decade, I can tell you this is the hardest part and everything at a show costs what you think it does in your head plus two zeroes on the end. These elements cost more than the booth itself. Note also in the US there are strictly enforced rules on unions building booths so you have to hire in union labour. Hi, FWIW, FFmpeg will most probably be granted a free community booth at the next SCaLE in 21x a month earlier also in South-Western USA. If this unfolds as it usually does, we will get confirmation in January. There are no hidden costs *there*. But of course it's a very different crowd of visitors than NAB's.
