That AACS task doesn't make sense (at least the naming) AACS is only the encryption of the discs, which is already solved by libaacs. Unless you specifically wanted to start a second decryptor? ;) Integrating libbluray is a completely different matter. It would maybe be a weeks work to be able to demux the individual titles with libbluray (i wrote that part on a higher level, using ffmpegs mpegts demuxer in the backend). The demuxing part of libbluray is already pretty stable, its just the menus (and the utter lack of BD-J support) that still need *loads* of work. Of course menus and all that shenanigans are really beyond ffmpegs scope to begin with. ;) - Hendrik

Yes, since the code for it is trivial I do think it would be nice to support it stand-alone, like MPlayer does. Same goes for CSS for DVDs as well. One of the reasons is that I think libaacs provides for example no stand-alone tool to just decrypt given the key (though I might be wrong here).

DTS-HD decoding support might be an option, since (at least some parts of) the DTS-HD spec was recently made public. FWIW, DTS-HD decoding could be split into several sub-projects: (1) Add support for mixed Core + DTS-HD stream structure (DtsCoreFrame+DtsHdFrame+DtsCoreFrame+DtsHdFrame+...), used by Blu-Ray main and commentary tracks. (2) Add support for a pure DTS-HD stream structure (DtsHdFrame+DtsHdFrame+DtsHdFrame+...), used by Blu-Ray PiP tracks. (3) Add support for XXCh extension (6.1 and 7.1 channels). (4) Add support for X96 extension (96khz). (5) Add support for XBR extension (extra bitrate). (6) Add support for XLL extension (lossless). (7) Add support for XSA extension (low bitrate variant, used for Blu-Ray PiP audio). In theory all extensions can be stored in either the DtsCoreFrame or in the DtsHdFrame, though in real life XBR and XLL are always only stored in the DtsHdFrame and XSA streams have no core at all. XCh, XXCh and X96 can be in either DtsCoreFrame or DtsHdFrame in real life. Best regards, madshi.

[CC-ing libav-devel as this may be of interest to them.] I had a chat with Ronald with regards to the the gsoc joint application, and we concluded that a shared mailing list/channel doesn't seem very feasible, mostly because of the flames and frictions that this could very likely generate, which won't be any good to the students. So I propose to have two separate applications, some way of indirect collaboration can still be achieved if there is reciprocal interest towards it, in case only FFmpeg will be accepted I propose to allocate a fair share of the slots to Libav developers. Of course we can still propose a joint application in case we manage to find an agreement on its conditions, but this doesn't seem very likely at the moment.

No need for another ML troll-fest. It isn't even relevant for a prospective student. Think about the rationale behind participating in GSoC together - because we share a significant amount of common code between us and any work produced by the student will probably benefit both the fork. The page should mention that and only that.

Do you propose a seperate FFmpeg / Libav SoC ML and IRC channel? Won't be of much help, if my experience from past year is worth anything. Students may prefer a quieter communication medium - private IRC or email. We can impose a rule like x264 where the student will have to be ping-able on IRC 24/7 (not everyone will like it) and / or the student may have to send a mandatory WIP patch to either of the ML before mid-term evaluation. That way, all developers will be able to participate in the evaluation process (although the end decision is made by the mentor and in rare cases the lead-admin for the org.)

You possibly miss the problem i was trieing to address. Misrepresenting the relation between FFmpeg and Libav. problem a-> having the 2 names listed together without clarification of their relation. problem b-> suggesting use of private communication and preventing public scrutiny I fully understand that overdoing correcting this is likely not interresting to a student and thats also not my intent. But there are moral (and probably legal) requirements of informing the reader (student or not) about the relation considering it is very obvious to the authors that the wording hints toward a different and untrue relation I wouldnt want to be sued from a user that gets his system hacked because he used libav instead of ffmpeg thinking it was something else than a fork of ffmpeg, and would contain all security fixes ...

maybe we misunderstand each other so let me provide an example. lets assume walken wants to mentor an hypothetical mpeg2 optimiztaion task. Walken is the guy behind libmpeg2 which in same cases is faster than ffmpegs mpeg2 decoder. I would 100% support him as mentor because no doubt he is qualified for that.

yes and no :) We must have safeguards and we do. The gsoc admin has the responsibility not to let any fake mentors in. Thats unambigous and simple. With the statement in the text you have "community members of considerable standing" sounds like writen by a fascist and this is politics. Besides who is and is not a "community members of considerable standing" is up to discussion on its own. Iam not really proposing a solution just pointing out that all developers of both projects must be able to participate in the discussion, design and review of the work done. The final decission of course would be the mentors. Its important as random developers will have good ideas how to improve the design here and there and its bad to loose that, also more eyes will spot more bugs earlier. Hi all, I'm proposing myself for administering the FFmpeg application for GSoC 2012. Google Summer of code 2012 main page: http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/homepage/google/gsoc2012 Official "idea page" for FFmpeg is at: http://wiki.multimedia.cx/index.php?title=FFmpeg_Summer_of_Code_2012 If you want to partecipate as mentor, this is the right time to add your name and/or propose tasks by editing this page (ask Mike Melanson for a wiki account in case you don't have one). *For the success of the application, it is important to have an ideas page as complete as possible.* Timeline: http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/events/google/gsoc2012 We have time until the 9th of March for applying as organization, then Google admins will evaluate applications and publish the list of accepted mentoring organizations in date 16th of March. BTW I need a backup admin for the application, this involves filling a form and agreeing with the Google terms. A tentative policy for running the project: development will happen on ffmpeg-devel (thus no dedicated ML), tasks are accepted/rejected based on the ranking system adopted in the previous years (which is named Melange, and is integrated in the GSoC website). Mentors have the final word on how to evaluate their mentored students. We could eventually create a dedicated ML for mentors in case we see there is the need, but really there is no need for discussing this right now (before the application is even accepted). A provisional text for the application follows, which is loosely based on the text I used for the ESA Socis 2011 application (I don't have any copyright claims on it, so feel free to adapt/change it whoever/whatever you are). I'm not sure if I'm giving the right kind of "review," or if some of the things I'm pointing out even matter, but here goes:
* Organization description
FFmpeg is a complete, cross-platform solution to record, convert and stream audio and video. It includes libavcodec - the leading audio/video codec library.
FFmpeg is possibly the most ubiquitous multimedia framework in the FLOSS world, is used as the multimedia engine for a significant part of multimedia applications, and provides the backend of possibly the most part of Internet-based multimedia transcoding services.
FFmpeg strives at being the *universal* multimedia tool, so it aims at implementing all possible multimedia formats (even the most oscure

In case of a disappearing student, we'll try to get in communication with him/her using all the possible channels at our disposal, in case the student won't get reachable in a reasonable amount of time we'll declare his/her task failed.
"won't get reachable" sounds confusing. Maybe "and in case the student
can't be still reached within a reasonable amount of time, we'll declare his/her task failed."?
* What steps will you take to encourage students to interact with your project's community before, during and after the program?
We'll encourage the student to idle on IRC and we'll request them to read and possibly participate to discussions on the main development mailing-list. On the other hand we'll let students choose the communication means which better suit them (email, IRC, direct voice call or whatever, public or private communication, agreed with the mentor).
We should also try to create a friendly environment where the student
"We will" instead of "We should"? DON'T APPLY
I feel like "does not apply" is more grammatically correct than "don't apply." If this wasn't the kind of review you had in mind for this, then ignore me :) --Michael Bradshaw

I'm not sure the expression "the most part" exists in English. "the majority" might work. But depends on what you want to express.
FFmpeg strives at being the *universal* multimedia tool, so it aims at implementing all possible multimedia formats (even the most oscure
"obscure" Also "aims to implement" seems to me less needlessly complex than "aims at implementing"
fringe formats and devices)
"formats and devices", the devices part doesn't make sense, particularly not together with "implementing".
, and at being *complete*, meaning that it aims at providing full fledged support for all operations involved with multimedia, relying on external projects when it makes sense.
I think this should be split up, this is one sentence over 4 lines or so. Keep in mind there will be foreign students.
* If your organization has not previously participated in Google Summer of Code, have you applied in the past? If so, for what year(s)?
DON'T APPLY
I think the standard way is to write N/A
* What is your plan for dealing with disappearing students?
In case of a disappearing student, we'll try to get in communication with him/her using all the possible channels at our disposal, in case the student won't get reachable in a reasonable amount of time we'll declare his/her task failed.
Well, trying to make sure they don't disappear would be good. Making sure we have multiple ways to contact them would be a good idea. Making sure that we even notice they have disappeared would be helpful as well.

Well, trying to make sure they don't disappear would be good. Making sure we have multiple ways to contact them would be a good idea. Making sure that we even notice they have disappeared would be helpful as well.

We hope to involve more contributors in the community, and at the same time we want to spread awareness of the project.
maybe gain 'more support for broadcast, web, mobile, film, gaming and other multimedia industries.'
* What is your plan for dealing with disappearing students?
We'll try to avoid that they will disappear in the first place, so we'll try to make sure that we have different ways to reach out each student. We'll also arrange to have periodical reports from students in order to track their progress.
mention that we will try to keep scheduled contact with students during qualification tasks to make sure they are reliable before they are accepted.
* What is your plan for dealing with disappearing mentors?
We'll try to assign a backup mentor to each task.
Even in case there is not an "official" backup mentor, we'll rely on the developers community to help the student to accomplish the assigned task.
i think a more clear 'several developers have offered to backup in case of dissapearing mentor' thanks for working on this. -compn

OK, but I don't think this is the first objective of the GSoC application (but a side effect), so I'm leaving that out.

Yes but right now I still can't see all these "several developers", so I'm only stating what we'll try to do.

PING! Tomorrow the application evaluation process will start, and we still have only two mentored tasks. As already said, the chance of the application approval much depends on the quality and on the number of proposed tasks, so please add and entry in in that page if you feel like you want to mentor a project, and do it *as soon as possible*. Note also that mentors from other multimedia projects are welcome (VLAN, MPlayer, GStreamer, you name it) so contact us on IRC or in this list if you want to mentor an FFmpeg task which is of interest to your project. What does it take to mentor a task? It usually requires around 5 hours per week, you may need to chat on IRC with your students and review and comment patches and RFCs. http://www.google-melange.com/gsoc/document/show/gsoc_program/google/gsoc201... For more info check the rest of the FAQ. Busy people can establish a quota for the time dedicated to their student, the student is supposed to be mature enough to be able to work as independently as possible, usually working on his/her git repo and sending patches from time to time to the main development mailing list. -- FFmpeg = Foolish & Fostering Multimedia Peaceless Ephemeral Gadget

I see 4 right now. I can happily add the MPEG-4 one I suggested, but I will have a hard time mentoring two things, so I'd certainly need at least someone to say that they think it a good idea.

Hi all, FFmpeg application for this Google Summer of Code has been rejected. On the bright side we got a lot of interesting discussions and cool tasks listed on our ideas page: http://wiki.multimedia.cx/index.php?title=FFmpeg_Summer_of_Code_2012 That also means that mentors themselves will have more time to hack, or even better to enjoy summertime (or wintertime depending on their latitude) away from computers! :-). I want to thank Stefano for taking the time to work on the application and everyone else who contributed. I'll regurgitate the reasons why were weren't chosen this year according to carols on #gsoc. Listed in no particular order: 1. The ideas page could have used some work. 2. They thought we didn't have a strong plan for backup mentors. 3. GSoC was attempting to, "make space for new orgs this year". The #gsoc chat log: http://blackhole.ubitux.fr/gsoc.log The ideas page: http://wiki.multimedia.cx/index.php?title=FFmpeg_Summer_of_Code_2012 The ideas page could have been more organized (I think Google people are probably overlyfond of bulleted lists) with a better intro. We should also start working on the idea page earlier that we did this year to give us more time to work it out. I planned on helping out with wiki page, but the timing was bad for me. Excuses.
