#5727(avfilter:new): HDCD should not apply gain unless the values match in both channels
by FFmpeg 08 Aug '16

#5727: HDCD should not apply gain unless the values match in both channels ----------------------------------+-------------------------------------- Reporter: bp0 | Type: defect Status: new | Priority: normal Component: avfilter | Version: git-master Keywords: | Blocked By: Blocking: | Reproduced by developer: 0 Analyzed by developer: 0 | ----------------------------------+-------------------------------------- The HDCD filter should not apply gain to a channel unless both channels have a matching target gain decoded from a valid packet. Using the attached sample with ffmpeg 3.1+ {{{ % ffmpeg -i ava16.flac -af hdcd ava24.flac }}} The sample is from The Avalanches - [2000] Since I Left You, about 17m40s from the beginning of the CD. This is not an HDCD encoded sample, but by coincidence has a sequence that is a valid HDCD packet in one channel. That channel will drop 6dB for 10 seconds after passing through the filter, when it should not. From [http://www.goodwinshighend.com/music/hdcd/aes_paper.pdf a paper by Kieth Johnson], the designer of the original HDCD encoder chip: The arrival of a valid packet for a channel resets a code detect timer for that channel. If both channels have active timers, then code is deemed to be present and the filter select data is considered valid immediately. However, any command data which would effect the level of the signal must match between the two channels in order to take effect. The primary reason for this is to handle the case where an error on one channel destroys the code. In such a case, the decoder will mistrack for a short time until the next command comes along, which is much less audible than a change in gain on only one channel, causing a shift in balance and lateral image movement. If either of the code detect timers times out, then code is deemed not to be present, and all commands are canceled, returning the decode system to its default state. If the conditions on the encoder side are not changing, then command packets are inserted on a regular basis to keep the code detect timers in the decoder active and to update the decoder if one starts playing a selection in the middle of a continuous recording. The HDCD filter in ffmpeg, and the fb2k plugin that it is based on, decode HDCD in each channel separately. The code detect timer is implemented, which is why the error only lasts for 10 seconds. Decoding the channels separately, however, prevents it from knowing the gain value for the other channel, and this would have to be changed to fix this bug. -- Ticket URL: <https://trac.ffmpeg.org/ticket/5727> FFmpeg <https://ffmpeg.org> FFmpeg issue tracker

#3455(ffmpeg:new): aresample=matrix_encoding=dplii doesn't downmix backleft and center correctly

#3455: aresample=matrix_encoding=dplii doesn't downmix backleft and center correctly -------------------------------------+------------------------------------- Reporter: Peter | Type: defect Status: new | Priority: normal Component: ffmpeg | Version: git- Keywords: aresample | master matrix_encoding dplii | Blocked By: Blocking: | Reproduced by developer: 0 Analyzed by developer: 0 | -------------------------------------+------------------------------------- Summary of the bug: DPLII files have too-loud right channel. Seems to be some problem with the interaction of back left and center channel How to reproduce: {{{ ffmpeg -i surround_blbrc.wav -af "aresample=matrix_encoding=dplii" -ac 2 dplii_blbrc.wav ffmpeg version git-2014-03-09-8dfd0e6 built on Mar 9 2014 22:53:26 with gcc 4.8.2 (Gentoo 4.8.2 p1.3r1, pie-0.5.8r1) }}} You can see the problem easiest by crafting a 5.1 surround wave file with empty channels except the center channel with noise and the two back channels, first half of the back left with noise and the second half of the back right with noise. However, all surround files that use the bl and center channels at the same time will be too loud in the resulting file's right channel. Can provide example files if you like. -- Ticket URL: <https://trac.ffmpeg.org/ticket/3455> FFmpeg <https://ffmpeg.org> FFmpeg issue tracker

#5759(avcodec:new): libopusenc: make surround masking and LFE optimizations default, optional and independent of mapping family
by FFmpeg 08 Aug '16

#5759: libopusenc: make surround masking and LFE optimizations default, optional and independent of mapping family -------------------------------------+------------------------------------- Reporter: Peter.White | Type: Status: new | enhancement Component: avcodec | Priority: wish Keywords: | Version: git- mapping_family | master Blocking: | Blocked By: Analyzed by developer: 0 | Reproduced by developer: 0 -------------------------------------+------------------------------------- Summary of the bug: Currently there is no way, that I know of, to enable surround masking and LFE optimizations in the libopus encoder, other than enabling -mapping_family 1. These optimizations result in a significantly lower bitrate at virtually the same perceptual quality. How to reproduce: {{{ % ffmpeg -i surround_input -c:a libopus output ffmpeg version N-81293-g81fcd91 Copyright (c) 2000-2016 the FFmpeg developers }}} This by default disables above mentioned optimizations, as stated by the docs for the mapping family option. To enable them one needs to set mapping family to 1, which does not make much sense for input with less than 3 channels. The current release of opusenc {{{ opusenc --version opusenc opus-tools 0.1.9 (using libopus 1.1.3) Copyright (C) 2008-2013 Xiph.Org Foundation }}} does enable those optimizations by default, easily observable by encoding the same input with opusenc: {{{ opusenc surround_input output }}} I have seen differences in bitrate of up to 20% with this. Plus, I have found no way to even disable them with opusenc. So, if the opus developers think it safe to enable these settings and not even provide an option to disable them, I think it should be just as safe for ffmpeg to enable them and provide an option to disable. Or, leave the defaults as is and provide an option to enable the optimizations separately from mapping family. That way one can still leverage the automatic mapping family setting with -mapping_family -1 but on top of that enable surround masking and LFE optimizations at will. Of course that should be a no-op if the number of channels is less than 3. Or, more precisely: {{{ffmpeg -i input -lfe_optimizations -surround_masking output.opus}}} should enable LFE optimizations only if there actually is an LFE channel and likewise for surround masking. -- Ticket URL: <https://trac.ffmpeg.org/ticket/5759> FFmpeg <https://ffmpeg.org> FFmpeg issue tracker
