I expect videos encoded with ffmpeg to retain whatever metadata is used by players (like QuickTime Player) to play HiDPI/Retina videos at the expected size. I'm experiencing this issue on a Mac, but it might be an issue across other platforms with HiDPi displays as well. {{{ $ ffmpeg version ffmpeg version 3.4.2 Copyright (c) 2000-2018 the FFmpeg developers built with Apple LLVM version 9.0.0 (clang-900.0.39.2) }}} How to reproduce: 1. Use QuickTime Player to create a Screen Recording on a Retina Mac. 2. Play the video you recorded in QuickTime Player using the ⌘1 Actual Size view. Notice that it’s playing 2:1 on your Retina Display, so the video looks sharp. It’s playing in half the space of the actual recorded pixels. 3. The specific behavior is that the video starts playing without any issues and if you watch from beginning to end there won't be any problem. However, if at any point you try to seek (sometimes it might take two or three attempts) the video stream will crash. Playback will either stop entirely, or the video stream will crash but audio stream will continue playing. This occurs on progressive encodes, but is worse on interlaced encodes. I have verified this behavior on both an Nvidia 1060 and an Nvidia 750 while using the newest static Win64 build from Zeranoe as well as a build from January. To rule out a problem with the GPU, driver, or NVENC itself, I used Staxrip x264 1.4.0.0 to encode with NVENC H.264 on 2 samples and saw no issues. Therefore, this issue appears to be specific to the FFMPEG implementation of NVENC. FFMPEG x264 does not suffer from this issue either. How to reproduce: % ffmpeg -i interlacedsample.mp4 -c:v h264_nvenc -b:v 20000000 -flags +ilme+ildct interlacedoutput.mp4 View the file in a player that supports deinterlacing (I'm using WMP 12 for consistency). Notice that the colors of the rings have massive stair- stepping around the curves, particularly in the lower right where the red and green intersect.
