The number in the brackets seems to be "29 + threads"; for example, I have a 12-thread Ryzen 3600 and when I don't specify threads it says 42 (for some reason internally 'threads' is set to 13 even though I don't have that many?), when I try `-threads 4` it says 33, and when I try `-threads 3` it just works! This is where the error is from: https://github.com/FFmpeg/FFmpeg/blob/master/libavcodec/nvdec.c#L401. The problem is also file-specific; after I re-enc the file, it works just fine without any fiddling. Computer: Ryzen 3600, Nvidia 1660Ti, Windows 10 Pro N. Aligning input buffers isn't even enough for formats like RGB24 (and requiring alignment would be a bad idea anyway since it wouldn't work with memory-mapped input files for example). Using swscale with x264 CLI seems to be a fairly consistent way to trigger such out-of-bounds crashes. As a side effect, frame skipping except keyframes doesn't work (all frames are skipped). In H.261, keyframes are normally indicated by the Freeze Picture Release bit in the Picture Header of a frame, but h261dec ignores that bit. h261enc behavior is to set that bit on keyframes. The problem was discovered in a client application that uses ffmpeg through its C API. I'm not sure if it can be reproduced through command line. Attached is a patch that fixes the problem. The video in question is a live TV stream and I am able to reproduce the issue when the recording is played from a local harddisk. The issue occurs in linux and windows, in kodi, vlc and ffplay and the videos recover OK when played on nvidia and intel gpu's on both windows and linux. The video plays ok if I disable vaapi (most of my testing is done in linux). I tried to play the video again, skipping over the corrupted frames, and there were no problems if I skipped over the bad part.
