I create a AVFormatContext from a video file, and then seek to a timestamp by calling: {{{ double timestamp; timestamp = 0.5 avformat_seek_file(format_context, 0, INT64_MIN, timestamp, timestamp); }}} My understanding is that avformat_seek_file() will seek to a position where it's an I-Frame with a pts that is <= 0.5. That is indeed what I see for most videos. However, for certain H265 videos, FFMPEG seeks to a position beyond the max_ts timestamp passed in. I want to decode the frame with pts=5120. So I call avformat_seek_file with min_ts=-INT64_MAX, ts=5120 and max_ts=5120. I expect that FFMPEG will seek to the frame with pts=4096 (because it is the last keyframe before pts=5120) so I can then decode forward and eventually get frame with pts=5120 with avcodec_receive_frame(), but it seems like the first frame that I get from avcodec_receive_frame() is the one with pts=6144. It would be nice if FFMPEG always seeked to a frame with pts <= the max_pts passed into avformat_seek_file. This normally does work with other codecs. Am I calling the library wrong? Should I be calling avformat_seek_file() with other flags? I tracked the problem down to a rather odd behavior of ass, where the outline width in x/y directions are scaled with PlayResX/PlayResY parameters. If these are set to values match the video aspect ratio, it works fine. But apparently ffmpeg does not do that when converting SRT to ASS (which it does before burning the subtitle into the images with the subtitles filter). The problem appears both when using the filter and also when keeping the subtitle as a separate track (converted to ASS), but not with a separate track keeping it in SRT format. (With an embedded separate ASS track the stretching is visible with a player that uses libass, like mpv, but not with vlc). It can be worked around by converting the SRT to an ASS file with ffmpeg, then edit the PlayResX/PlayResY by hand and using the fixed ASS for desired operation with ffmpeg. Note, though, that the issue propagates into higher-level video editing software like kdenlive, which use SRT internally and do not give the user to ability to apply such a workaround. They behave the same way. - When two `tcp` inputs are in use, the `ffmpeg` does NOT start listening the second input until the first input establishes connection. It is probably time to remove the big-endian pieces: it is very difficult to get a hold of real, working BE powerpc hardware these days. Errors are occasionally expected when using services like S3, and it's expected that the application handle them via a retry mechanism. ffmpeg seems to interpret an error as the end of the input file. In other words, if an error is encountered it simply stops encoding and finishes writing the output. This means the output file will be truncated. Ideally ffmpeg would be able to retry when hitting errors. This would enable reliable processing of large files in cloud storage systems without implementing a "split and stitch" or "chunked encoding" methodology. Although these approaches are feasible and widely used, they have some impact to quality and complexity. How to reproduce: Perform any transcode of a large (100 GB +) file via S3 signed URL. It will most likely produce a truncated output.
