dvdauthor-ing via ffmpeg encodings
by gavinj＠fnarg.net 16 Apr '05

Hello all, I'm trying to use ffmpeg to create a DVD. The errors I'm getting (from dvdauthor) suggest that my mpeg-2 file isn't DVD compliant due to missing navigational packets [1]. But I believe ffmpeg has been patched to fix this [2], and others on this list seem to be making DVDs ok [3]. Any clues as to what I'm missing? Here are my command line sessions .. Hardware MPEG-[12] encoders in ffmpeg?
by ahagge＠wbfa.com 15 Apr '05

15 Apr '05

Sorry if this is a FAQ, I couldn't find it anywhere... Does anyone know whether it's possible to use the hardware MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 encoders found on many higher-end TV tuner cards (such as the Hauppauge PVR-150, -250, -350 and -500 and the AVerMedia M150 & M179 in ffmpeg? In other words, when doing (for example) DV-to-DVD transcoding (with a package like transcode), to have the DV file read in from disk (using software decode), but use the hardware MPEG-2 encoder do the encoding to MPEG-2 (DVD format) encoding? If so, is it being actively pursued in ffmpeg (or any other Linux tools)? It seems to me that it would have a couple of distinct advantages: * SIGNIFICANT speedup (possibly at or near real-time transcoding, since the hardware is able to do real-time MPEG-2 encoding), even with lower-end CPUs. * IANAL, but it seems that this would get around any possible patent issues, since you're using the hardware to do the conversion, and (presumably) the cost of the MPEG-2 encoding license is factored into the cost of the hardware. Thoughts?

Hello, I already saw on2 mentioned in the patent discussion in the ffmpeg-devel-list. Are there plans to support the vp7 video-codec from on2 by ffmpeg? I have got a vp7 sample video and it has the audio codec 0x0500. Which audio codec is behind it? Thanks a lot, S?nke

Question regarding ffmpeg and codec disabling...

If you ship a product in such a way that it is not possible to replace the ffmpeg libraries by another version of them, particularly if you use static linking, you're in violation of the LGPL. So, you could disable MPEG2 by hand simply by removing the corresponding call to av_register_codec, but there is no point to that, because you cant do it legally and make it stick. problem of build ffmpeg on windows
by zstingx＠hotmail.com 11 Apr '05

11 Apr '05

Hello, I had tried to build ffmpeg on windows. I had read the ffmpeg docs about it (http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net/ffmpeg-doc.html#SEC24) so I had acted accordingly and installed mingw and msys. I had downloaded ffmpeg-0.4.9-pre1 and ran configure thus: ./configure --enable-shared --enable-mingw32 --enable-memalign-hack --enable-pp --enable-gpl I ran make and it pased. When I tried to ran ffmpeg.exe from the command line, I got the following error: "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application). So I dowloaded a previous (stable) version, ffmpeg-0.4.8 and repeated that process and got the same error ("The application failed to initialize properly") Any idea? installation of libs and headers
by brian＠gaugetheory.org 11 Apr '05

11 Apr '05

guys, I'm trying to build another app (ac3jack) that uses ffmpeg, and it can't find ffmpeg headers and libraries. I've installed ffmpeg both from CVS and from a release (hoping for a standard install). Why does avcodec.h, for example, not go to somewhere sane like /usr/local/include and why does libavcodec.a not go to, say, /usr/local/lib when doing a "make install"? The ac3jack site even warns: * FFMPEG -- version >= 0.4.6 Note that you'll need to make sure the header files are installed, some packages do not install the headers for some reason. A make install from the source code will do this. No it won't. Make install just seems to install the apps ffmpeg, ffserver, etc., in /usr/local/bin, not an install of headers, libs etc. despite setting configure PREFIXes. I could change the makefile, or put all the built pieces of ffmpeg where my other app can find them, but I think there is propbably a right way to instal ffmpeg for use by other apps. Any help would be appreciated. thanks, brian
