I would be interested in adding to the information on this page. http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net/compat.php I am no expert, but I sure have spent enough time fiddling around with things trying to get them to work. Making videos available for download on the web is still much too complicated. I use Linux and FreeBSD as my primary desktop systems, so I have no problem viewing most files, but most people are not so lucky. Many normal people don't click on video files because they are so sure they won't work. There should be some grid of pros and cons of different codec/container combinations. -- What default installations of what OS's can and can't play. -- What codec should be downloaded and where for each OS. -- Are there size or fps restrictions on some combination? -- Embedding the file vs. making it available for download The reason that I am posting this suggestion to ffmpeg-users is because in my experience most of the compatible codecs come from this code. I want more people to make sane educated decisions when preparing to make video files available for download on their websites rather than falling back on "easy" or broken solutions. I hope there are other people here who would would like to help to create such a resource. thanks for your time and suggestions, -- Marco

mpg on website only plays first few seconds

I created several different formats of movies for download from my website. --msmpeg4v2/avi for winXp --h264(mpeg4)/mov for new quicktime and --mpeg1/mpg for everyone else. Weird thing is that on older Macs OS9 and all windows I have tried the mpgs I have created only play the first second or so. The file seems to download, but then only plays the first few images. Files available here: http://marco.metm.org/conversation_piece/open_studio/ Is this an ffmpeg issue ? or some misconfiguration of my webserver ? The files play fine with mplayer on linux of course... Try audio bitrate 8 or 12. To my knowledge at least most phones don't support more than that and I don't know if 32 is a standard for amr_nb. problem creating mp4 files

Hi, I am capturing video from a live source and encoding in mp4 file format by using ffmpeg 0.4.9-pre1 There is some problem with ffmpeg mpeg4 codec. At 4, 8 and 16 fps the ffmpeg mpeg4 codec is not working properly. The captured mp4 file can not be played on QuickTime. I tried ffmpeg (mpeg4) for capturing from video source. At 4, 8 and 16 fps the mp4 and 3gp files generated by ffmpeg (mpeg4) can not be decoded correctly in Quicktime. If I use avi file format for output, the file can be played by any media player. Is anyone aware of this issue? If anyone knows some workaround, please do let us know. It's urgent. Audio decoding

Hi, I have been working on a school project where we have to decode a video in one place and send the already decoded video to another program for display. Using the tutorials, we were able to decode de video into different frames, but we are having problems decoding the audio. One of the tutorials had a kind of GetNextVideoFrame function. Would it be possible to alter it to also get the next audio frame ? Doesn't it mess up the Context ? Hope my questions aren't too newbie Thanks, --lf

ffmpeg avi and dv video

I'm trying to encode some raw DV video files into avi files containing DV video. I can't find the documentation on this anywhere, so I'm asking here. Does ffmpeg use avi type-1 or type-2 for dv video? If it does in fact support both, how would I specify which it should output? Also, I'm led to belive that issue is related to my actual problem: As of current, a 2.6G, 14 minute dv file, captured from the camera, will encode to an avi using the command: ffmpeg -i 4.dv -vcodec dvvideo -acodec pcm_s16le 4.avi But when trying to play, or re-encode that avi to another format (mpeg1video) will result in a video that's shorter than 5 minutes, as oposed to the full 14 minutes if encoded from the raw DV.
