I am new to linux and ffmpeg. I am trying to convert a series of photos taken by my webcam into a well compressed mpeg4 movie. Here is what I thought would work but did not. ffmpeg -i photo_%03d.jpg -vcodec msmpeg4 testOutput.avi ffmpeg version 0.4.9-pre1, build 4738, Copyright (c) 2000-2004 Fabrice Bellard configuration: --build i386-linux --enable-gpl --enable-pp --enable-zlib --enable-vorbis --enable-a52 --enable-dts --disable-mmx --disable-debug --prefix=/usr built on Feb 5 2005 01:20:01, gcc: 3.3.5 (Debian 1:3.3.5-6ubuntu1) Input #0, image2, from 'photo_5%03d.jpg': Duration: 00:00:04.0, start: 0.000000, bitrate: N/A Stream #0.0: Video: mjpeg, 640x480, 25.00 fps File 'testOutput.avi' already exists. Overwrite ? [y/N] y Output #0, avi, to 'testOutput.avi': Stream #0.0: Video: msmpeg4, 640x480, 25.00 fps, q=2-31, 200 kb/s Stream mapping: Stream #0.0 -> #0.0 [msmpeg4 @ 0x82d0e1c]colorspace not supported Error while opening codec for stream #0.0 - maybe incorrect parameters such as bit_rate, rate, width or height Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!! Gavin

does anyone have a cvs snapshot for 11/04?

Hi all, I really need to get hold of a cvs of ffpmeg dating from the end of last year. I'm trying to compile software (pidip for PD) that says "you must get the CVS snapshot" but the ffmpeg cvs has some of the pointers in the C code changed from when pidip was released! ??? - I don't know when they made the change but maybe a January cvs would do... converting ffmpeg-0.4.9-pre1 command line options to ffmpeg-CVS
by amadeus.stevenson＠gmail.com 30 Sep '05

30 Sep '05

Hi all, I've just switched to linux (slackware 10.2) from *bsd to get ffmpeg working. I had a DV video to MPG conversion going perfectly using ffmpeg-0.4.9-pre1, however I can no longer find a package for it (linuxpackages.net) and am using CVS build 3276800 instead. Before I used: fargs="-y -ilme -strict 1 -g 15 -r 25 -b 8000 -s 720x576 -hq -vcodec mpeg2video -acodec mp2 -ab 384 -ar 48000 -aspect 4:3" And I "converted" this to: fargs=" -y -ilme -strict=1 -g 15 -r 25 -b 8000 -s 720x576 -vcodec mpeg2video -acodec mp2 -ab 384 -ar 48000 -aspect 4:3" Of course changing the position of the -i bits. One thing I noticed was that in doing this: ffmpeg version CVS, build 3276800, Copyright (c) 2000-2004 Fabrice Bellard configuration: --prefix=/usr --enable-mp3lame --enable-libogg --enable-vorbis --enable-faad --enable-faac --enable-xvid --enable-a52 --enable-pp --enable-shared --enable-pthreads --enable-gpl built on Sep 20 2005 14:49:06, gcc: 3.3.6 Input #0, wav, from 'news28.wav': Duration: 00:04:15.0, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 1536 kb/s Stream #0.0: Audio: pcm_s16le, 48000 Hz, stereo, 1536 kb/s Input #1, avi, from 'news28.avi': Duration: 00:04:14.9, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 28882 kb/s Stream #1.0, 25.00 fps: Video: dvvideo, yuv420p, 720x576 Output #0, mpeg, to 'news28.mpg': Stream #0.0, nan fps: Video: mpeg2video, yuv420p, 720x576, q=2-31, 8000 kb/s Stream #0.1: Audio: mp2, 48000 Hz, stereo, 384 kb/s Stream mapping: Stream #1.0 -> #0.0 Stream #0.0 -> #0.1 Press [q] to stop encoding frame= 3321 q=0.0 size= 126858kB time=132.8 bitrate=7825.5kbits/s The "nan fps" and "q=0.0" lines don't seem too healthy. Have I done something stupid? The video renders OK. Thanks Amadeus

audio sync, square aspect, pass file problems
by craighagerman＠gmail.com 30 Sep '05

30 Sep '05

Hi, I am a bit new to ffmpeg, but have read all the documentation, searched online for help and I am stuck with a few issues. I am having a few problems with ffmpeg I was hoping to get help with. I am using ffmpeg to transcode mpeg-2 files (captured from TV) to mpeg-4 files. I am using some variation on this: ffmpeg -i <INPUT_MPEG2_FILE> -vcodec mpeg4 -aspect 4:3 -b 1000 -acodec mp3 -ab 128 <OUTPUT_MPEG4_FILE> 1. audio and video are out of sync. It doesn't matter whether I specify the output to be mp3 or not, the audio is WAY out of sync with the video, right from the beginning. Any suggestions for how I can fix the sync problem? 2. Square aspect. I specified -aspect 4:3 because the output files were square, but this has had no effect. No matter what I do the output files have a square aspect. But the original mpeg2 files were captured from a normal TV cable signal, which I assume is 4:3 Any idea why it insists on encoding the mpeg4 as a square aspect, and how to change this? 3. No pass file. I tried making ffmpeg do 2 pass encoding (-pass 2) but it complained: ffmpeg2pass-0.log: No such file or directory I didn't specify a log file, I just assumed it would automatically create one. So I made an empty file named ffmpeg2pass-0.log and specified it on the command line -pass 2 -passlogfilefile ffmpeg2pass-0.log which then complained: ffmpeg2pass-0.log-0.log: No such file or directory hmmm.... seems like it requires a name WITHOUT the -0.log bit, so I tried: -pass 2 -passlogfilefile ffmpeg2pass But this then complained: ffmpeg: ratecontrol.c:618: ff_rate_estimate_qscale: Assertion 'picture_number<rcc->num_entries' failed. Aborted I have absolutely no idea what this means or what do do about it. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Craig

timestamps
by asbach＠ient.rwth-aachen.de 28 Sep '05

28 Sep '05

Hi ffmpeg-users, having looked at Martin B?hme's tutorials, I'm now able to decode video - at least most videos that I've got here. Now I've dumped the info that I get from ffmpeg and compare that to the timestamps of the packets that I read. I'd like to know the frame time in seconds (starting with 0 at the beginning of the video) I've understood that the fps is codec->time_base.den / codec- >time_base.num. It looks like duration (in nanoseconds) is ic- >duration * fps, but there is also ic->stream[n]->duration. Where do I find the number of frames? If I look at packet.pts packet.dts ic->timestamp ic->stream[n]->pts ic->stream[n]->cur_dts ic->stream[n]->last_IP_pts codec->frame_number codec->real_pict_num I don't see, how these numbers are related. Obviously, codec- >frame_number is starting with 0 and increasing by 1 for each frame. Since I know the duration and the number of frames per second, I could calculate the frame time with no hassle - but what will happen with video that has frames of different display duration (meaning: no constant fps), like it is possible with QuickTime video containers? Unfortunately, I eventually want to seek to a given frame number OR frame time and for that, I need a timestamp. How do I calculate that number? It seems to equal the packet.dts for the given frame, but I can't find any relation between those other numbers. Thanks in advance, Mark -- Dipl.-Ing. Help on grabbing audoi stream
by panayotis＠panayotis.com 28 Sep '05

Hello! First of all I'd like to thank you for writing such a library. I'd like to use this library in order to grab an audio stream from a video file (mainly to work with the waveform, not really to listen it). Unfortunately the demo program you present in your website deals video streams only. Is there any other (well - simple) tutorial on how to deal with audio streams? Thank you
