Interlaced NTSC -> PAL DVD
by zboszor＠dunaweb.hu 10 Sep '05

10 Sep '05

Hi, here is the situation: my neighbour has a MiniDV camera that he bought when he was in Canada. The camera obviously produces NTSC interlaced material. He asked me to create DVDs from his recordings but since we are in Hungary, I would like to make PAL DVDs. This script produced visible interlaced artifacts: dvgrab --format raw --frames 0 --size 0 film.dv ffmpeg -f dv -i film.dv -target dvd -b 3000 -ab 224 -s pal film.mpg Note, the target is "dvd", not "pal-dvd". Is it a problem? The resolution given is "pal". How can I convert the NTSC frame rate to PAL frame rate? The video and audio bitrates were chosen so three one-hour recordings fit on one DVD. When I gave option "-deinterlace" to ffmpeg, it created an MPEG2 file that looked good for viewing on the computer. Then I tried to make a DVD from this file, but replaying wasn't too smooth. However replaying the plain MPEG2 file was very smooth. Replaying those MPEG2 files that I converted without "-deinterlace" were smooth on both DVD and plain but had interlaced artifacts. Unfortunately, the original DV file is now deleted and the DV casette is overwritten, too. So, how can I create a PAL DVD conforming MPEG2 file from this de-interlaced MPEG2 file? Please, suggest an ffmpeg command line, so the NTSC DV source is converted correctly to PAL resolution and frame rate in one go. I used DVDStyler from http://dvdstyler.sourceforge.net to create the DVD menu and file system, for replaying I used Xine if it's important. For the conversion, I used the RPMs from freshrpms.net, compiled from src.rpm files, e.g. ffmpeg-0.4.9-0.2.20050427.2.fc4.x86_64 Best regards, Zolt?n B?sz?rm?nyi

avcodec, avformat questions
by dss＠sch.bme.hu 09 Sep '05

Hi! I am trying to use avcodec and avformat. So far i was able to manage the problems, but i still have questions. I would really appreciate if you could help me: avformat - how can i generate index for avi files? avcodec - is there any information about image formats' byte order (maybe a translation for v4l2 formats?) Thanks in advance! Lenon SCH1201

The best quality OSS mpeg2 encoder?
by pengi.films＠gmail.com 09 Sep '05

09 Sep '05

I've started to make films recently using linux and I've been trying to find the best mpeg2 encoder for making DVD compliant video. After reading the news groups for a while, I realized this is one of those never-fully-answered, and always-asked questions. I decided to at least do some looking around beforehand to help alleviate the eye-rolling. First, to find the possible encoder candidates. A few months ago, I thought the main encoding utilities were mjpegtools, ffmpeg, transcode, and mencoder (please tell me if I missed any leading ones). But reading more deeply into the matter has raised a few questions for me. Please clarify things for me if you can. Transcode (http://www.transcoding.org/cgi-bin/transcode?Building_Transcode) and more importantly the ffmpeg home page (http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net/index.php) suggest that ffmpeg is built off of (and I suspect develops...?) libavcodec. libavcodec is also used by mplayer/mencoder. Given that ffmpeg has admitted having bitrate problems with mpeg-2, does that hold true for mencoder? The mplayer docs (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/HTML/en/codecs.html#ffmpeg) say that mplayer uses ffmpeg's libavcodec (which version?). How intertwined are these tools? I found a basic comparison between ffmpeg and mpeg2enc here: http://www.transcoding.org/cgi-bin/transcode?FFmpeg_Vs._Mpeg2enc that confirms ffmpeg's bitrate control problem (and a more brief description in the newsgroups: http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.video.ffmpeg.user/481) Both pages also suggest that transcode can use either ffmpeg/libavcodec or mpeg2enc when encoding. Yet, transcode lists neither as a dependency (from what I've seen)... Does it include its own libraries from these utilities? If so, which versions? So, if I'm reading this correctly, the truly 'base' utilities/libraries are ffmpeg and mpeg2enc, while transcode and mencoder are front-ends/re-branders of sorts. Is this accurate? Second, evaluate the encoders. The first step here would be research - look for others' work to avoid rehashing known facts. I've done some googling and haven't found much quantitative information comparing the stream quality of streams encoded by mpeg2enc and libavcodec (the FFmpeg_Vs._Mpeg2enc page offers some good starting information, but I fear that it's a little old - last edited over a year and a half ago). I found another site that compares many other encoders, but libavcodec and mpeg2enc aren't included: http://www.tecoltd.com/enctest/enctest.htm . Do you know any sites that have done any comparisons? What are your personal experiences with the two? If comparisons haven't been made, then I should do some. Which are good video types to test? What content do I want? I like tecoltd.com's choice of fast motion, edges, and details. What types of video will show how encoders differ? Joe

Several AVI's to one MPEG2
by m.bester＠mikrolab.com 09 Sep '05

09 Sep '05

Hello, I'm trying to put several AVI's (video only) consecutively into one MPEG2 movie for DVD burning. The following command line doesn't work: ffmpeg -i video_0.avi -i video_1.avi -target pal-dvd out.mpg ffmpeg version 0.4.9-pre1, build 4747, Copyright (c) 2000-2004 Fabrice Bellard configuration: built on Mar 17 2005 08:34:25, gcc: 3.3 20030226 (prerelease) (SuSE Linux) Input #0, avi, from 'video_0.avi': Duration: 00:00:17.9, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 5807 kb/s Stream #0.0: Video: mjpeg, 720x576, 25.00 fps Input #1, avi, from 'video_1.avi': Duration: 00:00:17.4, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 8238 kb/s Stream #1.0: Video: mjpeg, 720x576, 25.00 fps Output #0, dvd, to 'out.mpg': Stream #0.0: Video: mpeg2video, 720x576, 25.00 fps, q=2-31, 6000 kb/s Stream mapping: Stream #0.0 -> #0.0 Press [q] to stop encoding frame= 448 q=0.0 Lsize= 13178kB time=17.9 bitrate=6037.7kbits/s video:12932kB audio:0kB global headers:0kB muxing overhead 1.900919% Is there a way to make this work? Is there an "append" option with ffmpeg? Thank you for the help. Regards, Marko

Broken MPEG seeking
by perera-ffmpeg＠thepereras.org 08 Sep '05

Hi all It appears that the mpeg output generated by ffmpeg does not interact well with the seeking code. Encoding the video seems to be fine: $ ~/software/ffmpeg/bin/ffmpeg -i seaport-dv.avi -vcodec mpeg2video seaport-mpeg.mpg ffmpeg version CVS, build 3211776, Copyright (c) 2000-2004 Fabrice Bellard configuration: --disable-mmx built on Sep 8 2005 18:02:47, gcc: 3.2.3 20030502 (Red Hat Linux 3.2.3-39) Input #0, avi, from 'seaport-dv.avi': Duration: 00:00:12.6, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 24007 kb/s Stream #0.0: Video: dvvideo, yuv411p, 720x480, 25.00 fps Output #0, mpeg, to 'seaport-mpeg.mpg': Stream #0.0: Video: mpeg2video, yuv420p, 720x480, 25.00 fps, q=2-31, 200 kb/s Stream mapping: Stream #0.0 -> #0.0 Press [q] to stop encoding frame= 316 q=0.0 Lsize= 708kB time=12.6 bitrate= 460.3kbits/s video:702kB audio:0kB global headers:0kB muxing overhead 0.887542% Now, during playback, trying to seek to the middle somewhere (by clicking in the middle of the window) causes trouble: $ ~/software/ffmpeg/bin/ffplay seaport-mpeg.mpg Seek to 45% ( 0:00:03) of total duration ( 0:00:07) [mpeg2video @ 0x82c87b8]invalid mb type in I Frame at 0 25 [mpeg2video @ 0x82c87b8]invalid mb type in I Frame at 0 26 [mpeg2video @ 0x82c87b8]invalid mb type in I Frame at 0 27 [mpeg2video @ 0x82c87b8]invalid mb type in I Frame at 0 28 [mpeg2video @ 0x82c87b8]invalid mb type in I Frame at 0 29 [mpeg2video @ 0x82c87b8]warning: first frame is no keyframe Seek to 47% ( 0:00:03) of total duration ( 0:00:07) [mpeg2video @ 0x82c87b8]warning: first frame is no keyframe I get the same seeking errors when exercising av_frame_seek as a library call. In particular, the seek finds a frame near the requested timestamp, but not a keyframe. Since the P frames depend on the I frame, the decoding fails, or else the decoded frames are useless. I believe the problem is in av_seek_frame_binary, in that it does not check if the packets it sees are key frames or not. I don't have enough knowledge of the MPEG file format to determine if this is easy to fix or not. I can seek fine into other mpegs I have. I think this is because whatever data is in the stream causes av_seek_frame_generic to be called, thus generating the index, and therefore seeks to key frames. My goal is to be able to seek to a given frame number (assuming constant frame rate). Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Amitha.

PSP Encoding
by neil＠squarecircle.co.uk 08 Sep '05

08 Sep '05

Hi, Hope this isn't a repeat - I've searched the lists... I've just acquired a UK PSP, and am trying to transcode MPG and AVI files into the MP4 format it requires. The command lines I enter work (I've tried just about every one listed on the net), and the PSP sees them (and I can play them back in Windows Media Player with 3ivx codecs), but then just reports an error when I try to open them. I've tried this with both the latest CVS version (as of two nights ago), and an older snapshot that came with gpac (build 4557, I think?); I can't get it to work. Can anyone make any suggestions? My PSP has v2 firmware; is the -f psp option still working? Best wishes, Neil
