Problem converting ogg to ac3
by steve.nixon＠gmail.com 03 May '06

Hi there, new member to the list, however, I assure you I have followed the instructions and checked the archives before posting (at least back to November 2005) :) I am trying to transcode a .ogg file I have extracted from a .mkv file into a .ac3 file. I know the .ogg file is fine (at least as far as I can tell) because it plays. However, when I run ffmpeg I get a problem with "Unknown Format". I am running OpenSUSE 10.0 with the latest CVS package from the packman repositries (cvs20060409). The command I'm running is: #ffmpeg -y -i tmp_any2dvd/BSG_101-a2.ogg -ar 48000 -ab 384 -ac 2 tmp_any2dvd/BSG_101-a2.ac3 The output I get is: FFmpeg version CVS, Copyright (c) 2000-2004 Fabrice Bellard configuration: --prefix=/usr --mandir=/usr/share/man --libdir=/usr/lib64 --enable-shared --enable-mp3lame --enable-libogg --enable-vorbis --enable-theora --enable-faad --enable-faac --enable-xvid --enable-x264 --enable-a52 --enable-pp --enable-gpl --enable-gprof --enable-amr_nb --enable-amr_wb libavutil version: 49.0.0 libavcodec version: 51.9.0 libavformat version: 50.4.0 built on Apr 27 2006 12:55:50, gcc: 4.0.2 20050901 (prerelease) (SUSE Linux) tmp_any2dvd/BSG_101-a2.ogg: Unknown format I have updated every library and package I can think might be in use to the latest from the various SUSE repositries. Frankly I'm at a loss! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Steve

Differences in converted .wav files
by DHiggins＠ETS.ORG 02 May '06

02 May '06

I have been using ffmpeg to downsample and convert a set of .wma files into .wav files. For technical reasons, we will need to do conversions on multiple machines, some of which run linux and some of which run Windows. We still want to minimize differences between files converted on different machines, though, since they will be processed by a speech recognizer, and we would like consistent recognizer hypotheses, no matter where the file was converted. However, it seems that the exact bytestream we get depends both on the particular machine and on the exact version of ffmpeg we use. The size of the converted file is always the same, but there are slight differences scattered throughout the file. My immediate thought was that this was some sort of floating-point roundoff issue, which should not affect recognition significantly. Does anyone on the list know exactly what these differences could result from, whether they are important, and what we can do to avoid them? Hello! I am using ffmpeg to encode avi files to mp4 files QuickTime can play. Does anyone know of a way (or if it is possible) to make these mp4 files play in QT in a progressive download fashion as I will be viewing them over the web? ffmpeg & realtime video effects
by sriraman.krishna＠gmail.com 01 May '06

Hi Masters, i want to embedd a video (to make things simple consider an image (a logo))) on top of another video and want play the resulting video.. all these in realtime.... i tried the same on mplayer + bmovl (vf_osd) du to some performance issues i was looking for something diffrent... after a while i found ffmpeg and vhooks what i want is, use ffmpeg vhook to dump video (or image) on top of the source video...and play the same using mplayer... for realtime performance i instructed fffmpeg to dump the out put to a fifo and instrctued mplayer to play from fifo.... What i experianced was ffmpeg processing is slow so the system(mplayer) cant give a realtime video play.. it is jerky.... I feel the issue is ffmpeg takes time to encode the frames.... which output format and codec and ffmpeg options should i use to get max performance.... I am realy rolling arund this for week.. if some can help me that will be great.. Thanks in advance Sriraman sriraman.krishna at gmail.com
