Big AVI file conversion problem
by franck.perrot＠epfl.ch 26 Jul '06

hi there, using ffmpeg on linux Red hat AS 4, ffmpeg work well except when the resulting output AVI file is too big. #ffmpeg -version FFmpeg version SVN-rUNKNOWN, Copyright (c) 2000-2004 Fabrice Bellard configuration: --enable-mp3lame --enable-vorbis --enable-faad --enable-faadbin --enable-gpl --enable-a52bin --enable-libogg --enable-xvid --enable-shared --enable-pthreads --enable-faac --enable-a52 libavutil version: 49.0.0 libavcodec version: 51.10.0 libavformat version: 50.5.0 built on Jul 26 2006 14:48:52, gcc: 3.4.5 20051201 (Red Hat 3.4.5-2) ffmpeg SVN-rUNKNOWN libavutil 3211264 libavcodec 3344896 libavformat 3278080 Examples (see the size changing): 1) This give a correct AVI file with correct duration: #ffmpeg -i clip.mpg -aspect 4:3 -sameq -s 48x36 -vcodec rawvideo -acodec pcm_s16le /tmp/Clip2005.avi 2) But this give a truncated AVI file with wrong duration (3 mn instead of 5.5 mn). But curiously, the time displayed by ffmpeg (346.7) is correct. #ffmpeg -i CCC_Allan_Afuah.mpg -aspect 4:3 -sameq -s 480x360 -vcodec rawvideo -acodec pcm_s16le /tmp/Clip2005.avi FFmpeg version SVN-rUNKNOWN, Copyright (c) 2000-2004 Fabrice Bellard configuration: --enable-mp3lame --enable-vorbis --enable-faad --enable-faadbin --enable-gpl --enable-a52bin --enable-libogg --enable-xvid --enable-shared --enable-pthreads --enable-faac --enable-a52 libavutil version: 49.0.0 libavcodec version: 51.10.0 libavformat version: 50.5.0 built on Jul 26 2006 14:48:52, gcc: 3.4.5 20051201 (Red Hat 3.4.5-2) Input #0, mpeg, from 'CCC_Allan_Afuah.mpg': Duration: 00:05:45.3, start: 0.213367, bitrate: 1394 kb/s Stream #0.0[0x1e0]: Video: mpeg1video, yuv420p, 352x240, 1150 kb/s, 29.97 fps(r) Stream #0.1[0x1c0]: Audio: mp2, 44100 Hz, stereo, 224 kb/s File '/tmp/Clip2005.avi' already exists. So...I realy have no idea where to look at, if the problem comes from Linux, partition (ext3), memory or ffmpeg. It's NOT a file size limit because I have created a 6GB AVI file by using ffmpeg. Any good help would be appreciated. Thx in advance, franck P.

Converting AVI to FLV
by ffmpeg＠tompercival.com 26 Jul '06

I am trying to convert a 15.3 second .avi clip to .flv with the following: ffmpeg -y -i /path/to/avi/12.avi -acodec mp3 -f flv /path/to/flv/14.flv The resulting flv seems to think it is 15.8 seconds long but takes over 20 seconds to actually play - audio and video are in synch but it simply plays in slow motion. The same happens when I try to convert a 3GP clip. I am using the latest subversion checkout and I get the following when I run the command: FFmpeg version SVN-r5827, Copyright (c) 2000-2004 Fabrice Bellard configuration: --enable-amr_nb --enable-amr_wb --enable-gpl --enable-mp3lame libavutil version: 49.0.0 libavcodec version: 51.10.0 libavformat version: 50.5.0 built on Jul 25 2006 20:41:25, gcc: 3.4.4 20050721 (Red Hat 3.4.4-2) Input #0, avi, from '/path/to/avi/12.avi': Duration: 00:00:15.4, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 1279 kb/s Stream #0.0: Video: mjpeg, yuvj420p, 320x240, 15.07 fps(r) Stream #0.1: Audio: pcm_u8, 8000 Hz, mono, 64 kb/s Output #0, flv, to '/path/to/flv/14.flv': Stream #0.0: Video: flv, yuv420p, 320x240, q=2-31, 200 kb/s, 15.07 fps(c) Stream #0.1: Audio: mp3, 8000 Hz, mono, 64 kb/s Stream mapping: Stream #0.0 -> #0.0 Stream #0.1 -> #0.1 Press [q] to stop encoding [mp3 @ 0x83b90d8]lame: output buffer too small (buffer index: 321, free bytes: 1983) frame= 232 q=15.8 Lsize= 625kB time=15.3 bitrate= 334.0kbits/s video:498kB audio:120kB global headers:0kB muxing overhead 1.148812% I am relatively new to ffmpeg but have trawled to find an existing answer to this but have run up against a brick wall. If anyone has any pointers it would be much appreciated. Could the problem be with this lame output buffer issue? Best Tom

problem with av_input_open_file
by John.Horton＠eu.sony.com 26 Jul '06

26 Jul '06

Hi, I have obtained ffmpeg via the 1.0pre8 release of MPlayer and am trying to use av_input_open_file to open a .mov file. I have called av_register_all, but the av_input_open_file call always returns with ENOENT. Furthur investigation shows that the av_probe_input_format returns null (I am calling the av_input_open_file with Null, 0 and Null as the last three arguments). Can anyone shed any light as to what might be going on as I am very new to ffmpeg (only been using it for a couple of days and I can't seem to find this issue in any of the email archives) Thanks John ************************************************************************ The information contained in this message or any of its attachments may be confidential and is intended for the exclusive use of the addressee(s). command line cropping?
by jtugman＠mitre.org 25 Jul '06

I am looking for a solution to a probelm I have. I need to be able to send a variable into an application with a start time and end time and rewrite the orginal media into a new file. example: myMovie.avi is 20min long. I want to use the command line to make a new file based on myMovie.avi. The new start point in 00:03:45 and the new end point is 00:10:30. Basically chopping the video. Is this something FFmepg can do? Thanks for the advice. I've been bashing my head trying to find a .bat type solution to this problem. Jason Tugman

syntax for woking with logitech cameras
by knockingsoul＠yahoo.com 25 Jul '06

25 Jul '06

Guys, I fixed the issue with not getting the ffmpeg to recognize the /dev/video0. There is a patch for that. Now I am looking for ffmepg syntax to grab my frames with Logitech 4000 pro. I don't need 25 fps, I want to snap jpgs if possible at a rate of 3 fps. Any suggestions would be wicked! Hubert. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? documenting options
by lists＠forevermore.net 24 Jul '06

24 Jul '06

I've recently started digging into some of the more advanced ffmpeg options in a quest to figure out why the xvid output from transcode looks better than ffmpeg. Am I the only one who finds the state of ffmpeg's documentation to be completely infuriating? For example, one of the better-documented ones: -umv E.V.. use unlimited motion vectors At least this tells me what it does. However, what it fails to tell me is that (at least with xvid) it requires a parameter. What should that parameter be? is it int, float, hash value? Is it like quant where lower is better, or will it give better results if I set it to 1000? What's the range? When I ask in #ffmpeg on freenode about what some of these options do (like -partitions and its ilk, which have NO mention in the man page), I'm told to check the source (which would be a lot of help if options like this were documented), or to read the documentation for mencoder (which doesn't cover most of these, and for other things like -vhq there are no analogues in ffmpeg). The other option, of course, is "write it yourself" -- which I might be inclined to do if there was any information available to use as a basis. So with that said, why isn't there better documentation about all of these options, which modes use them, and most importantly what kind of effects they'll have on output video? -Chris

any gets?

I would like to pull various stats from video/audio files in ffmpeg but I don't see the flags to dump/format this data. What / where can I find the flags to do that stuff? Like get duration, framesize, framecount, author, comments, etc? Is it possible to format the output of dump like Imagemagick does? Thanks --------------------------------- Groups are talking.
