Pipe format problem
by John.Randle＠mbda-systems.com 17 Nov '08

Hi, I have an application which produces a sequence of RGB still images, which I need to convert into a movie in mpeg1 format. By modifying my application to write out hundreds of .bmp files, I had success with this command line: ffmpeg -f image2 -i Image%03d.bmp Movie.mpg While this worked OK for a short video (less than 1 minute) it is clearly not practical for a two hour one. (One work-around would be to repeat this 1 minute process a couple of hundred times and then concatenate the resulting mpeg1 files into one large one, but this seems like an inefficient solution to me.) Looking through the archives, I noticed some people using a 'pipe' approach, so I modified my application to write the bitmap files to stdout and then tried this command line: PipeTest.exe | ffmpeg -f image2pipe -vcodec bmp -i - Movie.mpg (If I didn't include the bmp information, ffmpeg could not figure out the format of the data.) This looked quite promising, in that ffmpeg seemed to expect the correct number of bytes for my 256 * 256 pixel bitmap frames, but it crashed out with the following screen listing: FFmpeg version SVN-r15394, Copyright (c) 2000-2008 Fabrice Bellard, et al. configuration: --enable-memalign-hack --enable-postproc --enable-swscale --ena ble-gpl --enable-libfaac --enable-libfaad --enable-libgsm --enable-libmp3lame -- enable-libvorbis --enable-libtheora --enable-libx264 --enable-libxvid --disable- ffserver --disable-vhook --enable-avisynth --enable-pthreads libavutil 49.10. 0 / 49.10. 0 libavcodec 52. 0. 0 / 52. 0. 0 libavformat 52.22. 1 / 52.22. 1 libavdevice 52. 1. 0 / 52. 1. 0 libswscale 0. 6. 1 / 0. 6. 1 libpostproc 51. 2. 0 / 51. 2. 0 built on Sep 24 2008 15:49:57, gcc: 4.2.4 (TDM-1 for MinGW) [bmp @ 003EC840]not enough data (4096 < 196662) [bmp @ 003EC840]bad magic number <<snip>> - this error line repeated a total of 77 times [bmp @ 003EC840]bad magic number Input #0, image2pipe, from 'pipe:': Duration: N/A, bitrate: N/A Stream #0.0: Video: bmp, 25.00 tb(r) picture size invalid (0x0) Cannot allocate temp picture, check pix fmt (I'm running on Windows XP Pro SP3, as a limited user.) It looks as if ffmpeg read the first 4k from the pipe OK, but then did not wait for it to be refilled before aborting. I guess I am doing something wrong somewhere, but I can't figure out what. I noticed that other users with similar requirements had success using the yuv4mpegpipe format, but I can't find details of this format anywhere and in any case if I cannot use pipes for some reason, I could be wasting my time modifying my application again. Any pointers welcome at this stage! compliation Error 1 on ffmpeg (mac osx 10.4)

I am trying to install ffmpeg on my mac so I can use ffmpeg-php. I am unable to successfully make the ffmpeg library. I'm using the XCode tools from apple, except yesterday I downloaded and installed the newest version of gnu make in case that would help. It is on a g4 imac (PowerPC) running 10.4.11. I'm just using this machine for development (not production). Here's what I've already done: - installed libmp3lame (lame 398-2) - installed faac - installed faad2 those all went fine. here's the configure command for ffmpeg: sudo ./configure --prefix=/usr/local --enable-gpl --enable-shared --enable-libfaac --enable-libfaad --enable-libmp3lame --disable-vhook --disable-mmx which seemed to work fine. when I run make, I get the following error every time (It happened several times yesterday, and again today after ditching everything and starting over). (...many messages, including a ton of warnings about other files in libavformat...) libavformat/udp.c: In function 'udp_read': libavformat/udp.c:471: error: 'MSG_DONTWAIT' undeclared (first use in this function) libavformat/udp.c:471: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once libavformat/udp.c:471: error: for each function it appears in.) make: *** [libavformat/udp.o] Error 1 I looked at the source, and the MSG_DONTWAIT constant is not defined anywhere in the file. Apparently it is a linux constant (I found some reference to it elsewhere, but nothing relating to this error.) All of the software is the newest versions, downloaded from the projects (svn for ffmpeg). Any suggestions? thanks in advance.

I tried some HD camcorders, most of them does not manage to shoot a real "p" frame eg: Canon HF10 (in "p" mode: there is still some artefacts/lines - sometimes and not everywhere) but the Canon HG21 seems to produce real "1080p" read this, maybe an explanation? <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_segmented_Frame> seems there is just a few real "p" camcorders bye Herv?

Converting MOV to MP4
by jgabor＠gmail.com 15 Nov '08

15 Nov '08

I'm having some troubles converting a MOV (trailer downloaded from Apple Trailers) to a MP4. I've tried setting the settings thru my preset (which haven't failed on me on other formats) and by running a simple 'ffmpeg -i input.mov output.mp4', and also forcing '-r 25' and '-f mp4'. I get the following output: FFmpeg version SVN-r15636, Copyright (c) 2000-2008 Fabrice Bellard, et al. configuration: --enable-gpl --enable-postproc --enable-libvorbis --enable-libtheora --disable-debug --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libfaad --enable-libfaac --enable-pthreads --enable-libx264 libavutil 49.12. 0 / 49.12. 0 libavcodec 52. 0. 0 / 52. 0. 0 libavformat 52.22. 1 / 52.22. 1 libavdevice 52. 1. 0 / 52. 1. 0 libpostproc 51. 2. 0 / 51. 2. 0 built on Oct 18 2008 20:49:18, gcc: 4.2.3 (Ubuntu 4.2.3-2ubuntu7) Input #0, mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2, from 'input.mov': Duration: N/A, bitrate: N/A Output file does not contain any stream I've tried googling for guides, but they are either outdated or not helpful, since I already know how to do start the transcode itself. The error "Output file does not contain any stream" doesn't tell me much either, since it won't even start encoding... Any help?

ffplay wakes CPU at about 1000Hz
by armencho＠gmail.com 14 Nov '08

14 Nov '08

Hi all, I have just noticed that using ffplay keeps my CPU from idling at the rate of about 1000 wakeups per second, as per Intels Powertop utility (www.lesswatts.org) statistics. I am playing an HTTP-delivered MP3-formatted audio stream using "ffplay -nodisp -fast http://scfire-ntc-aa01.stream.aol.com:80/stream/1035" through a PulseAudio server. Powertop says "do_nanosleep (hrtimer wakeup)" next to where it reports the wakeup frequency, which to me suggests there is an explicit call to do some sleep related stuff, which in turn is called by a high-resolution timer of sorts. I am by no means a kernel hacker though. Can anybody confirm this? Is this something that can be fixed, or is an inherent design decision? For comparision running Rhytmbox using gstreamer framework, playing the same stream over Pulseaudio again, does not yield any separate wakeup cause in powertop. If i am in the wrong mailing list, I would appreciate hearing about where I should post this, thanks. (Intel Core 2 Duo CPU in a Thinkpad T61, Ubuntu 8.10 x86 32-bit) (ffplay version output:) FFplay version r11872+debian_3:0.svn20080206-12ubuntu3, Copyright (c) 2003-2008 Fabrice Bellard, et al. configuration: --enable-gpl --enable-pp --enable-swscaler --enable-x11grab --prefix=/usr --enable-libgsm --enable-libtheora --enable-libvorbis --enable-pthreads --disable-strip --enable-libfaad --enable-libfaadbin --enable-liba52 --enable-liba52bin --enable-libdc1394 --disable-armv5te --disable-armv6 --disable-altivec --disable-vis --enable-shared --disable-static libavutil version: 49.6.0 libavcodec version: 51.50.0 libavformat version: 52.7.0 libavdevice version: 52.0.0 built on Oct 3 2008 22:40:31, gcc: 4.3.2

Frame Size must be a multiple of 2
by warrick.fitzgerald＠gmail.com 14 Nov '08

Hi Guys, I'm trying to convert an MPEG to FLV - I'm setting the size to 300 x 225 and keep getting an error saying "Frame Size Must be a multiple of 2". Obviously I can just set the size to 300 x 226 and all works fine, but I'd really like to know why this limitation exists and if there's a way to override the check and force it to output at this size. Thanks Warrick

Streaming live video + h263 codec + RTP problem

Hi all. I'm having some trouble trying to stream live webcam video using h263 codec and streaming it with RTP protocol. I've tested it with MPEG4 and it seems to work well. I really wanted to use h263 instead of MPEG4. So here goes the steps i took in order to make this work: 1- Run: "ffmpeg -r 5 -s cif -f video4linux -i /dev/video0 -vcodec h263 -an -f rtp rtp://localhost:5000" 2- This generated: FFmpeg version SVN-r15801, Copyright (c) 2000-2008 Fabrice Bellard, et al. configuration: --enable-libfaac --enable-libfaad --enable-libmp3lame --enable-gpl libavutil 49.12. 0 / 49.12. 0 libavcodec 52. 3. 0 / 52. 3. 0 libavformat 52.23. 1 / 52.23. 1 libavdevice 52. 1. 0 / 52. 1. 0 built on Nov 11 2008 17:43:06, gcc: 4.3.0 20080428 (Red Hat 4.3.0-8) Input #0, video4linux, from '/dev/video0': Duration: N/A, start: 1226600243.092364, bitrate: 6082 kb/s Stream #0.0: Video: rawvideo, yuv420p, 352x288, 6082 kb/s, 5.00 tb(r) Output #0, rtp, to 'rtp://localhost:5000': Stream #0.0: Video: h263, yuv420p, 352x288, q=2-31, 200 kb/s, 5.00 tb(c) Stream mapping: Stream #0.0 -> #0.0 SDP: v=0 o=- 0 0 IN IP4 127.0.0.1 t=0 0 s=No Name a=tool:libavformat 52.23.1 c=IN IP4 localhost m=video 5000 RTP/AVP 34 b=AS:200 Press [q] to stop encoding frame= 915 fps= 5 q=2.8 Lsize= 4584kB time=183.00 bitrate= 205.2kbits/s 3- I copied the SDP info generated by ffmpeg, and pasted it into "test.sdp" 4- Run: "ffplay test.sdp" (Now here come the problems...) 5- This generated: FFplay version SVN-r15801, Copyright (c) 2003-2008 Fabrice Bellard, et al. configuration: --enable-libfaac --enable-libfaad --enable-libmp3lame --enable-gpl libavutil 49.12. 0 / 49.12. 0 libavcodec 52. 3. 0 / 52. 3. 0 libavformat 52.23. 1 / 52.23. 1 libavdevice 52. 1. 0 / 52. 1. 0 built on Nov 11 2008 17:43:06, gcc: 4.3.0 20080428 (Red Hat 4.3.0-8) [h263 @ 0x9dab220]warning: first frame is no keyframe [h263 @ 0x9dab220]illegal ac vlc code at 11x8 [h263 @ 0x9dab220]Error at MB: 195 [h263 @ 0x9dab220]concealing 276 DC, 276 AC, 276 MV errors [h263 @ 0x9dab220]warning: first frame is no keyframe [h263 @ 0x9dab220]illegal ac vlc code at 11x8 [h263 @ 0x9dab220]Error at MB: 195 [h263 @ 0x9dab220]concealing 276 DC, 276 AC, 276 MV errors [h263 @ 0x9dab220]Bad picture start code [h263 @ 0x9dab220]header damaged [h263 @ 0x9dab220]Bad picture start code [h263 @ 0x9dab220]header damaged [h263 @ 0x9dab220]illegal ac vlc code at 19x7 [h263 @ 0x9dab220]Error at MB: 180 [h263 @ 0x9dab220]concealing 290 DC, 290 AC, 290 MV errors [h263 @ 0x9dab220]Bad picture start code [h263 @ 0x9dab220]header damaged [h263 @ 0x9dab220]Bad picture start code [h263 @ 0x9dab220]header damaged [h263 @ 0x9dab220]illegal dc 128 at 17 4 [h263 @ 0x9dab220]illegal dc 0 at 17 4 [h263 @ 0x9dab220]illegal ac vlc code at 17x4 [h263 @ 0x9dab220]Error at MB: 109 [h263 @ 0x9dab220]concealing 356 DC, 356 AC, 356 MV errors [h263 @ 0x9dab220]Bad picture start code [h263 @ 0x9dab220]header damaged [h263 @ 0x9dab220]Bad picture start code [h263 @ 0x9dab220]header damaged [h263 @ 0x9dab220]Bad picture start code [h263 @ 0x9dab220]header damaged [h263 @ 0x9dab220]Bad picture start code [h263 @ 0x9dab220]header damaged [h263 @ 0x9dab220]illegal ac vlc code at 21x2 [h263 @ 0x9dab220]Error at MB: 67 [h263 @ 0x9dab220]concealing 380 DC, 380 AC, 380 MV errors And kept on going. configure can't find existing x264 installation on Debian
by stepheneliotdewey＠gmail.com 14 Nov '08

I've sent this email 2 times already but it was held for moderation (first because I wasn't a list member, second because the email was too large. Now I've gzipped 2 of the files to save space.). Hopefully you won't get multiple copies. *** I apologize because I bet this question is asked a lot, but I can't seem to find a solution anywhere. I have been having trouble getting the x264 library set up so that it can be compiled into my ffmpeg installation (on Debian). Initially, I had the error: "ERROR: libx264 version must be >= 0.65" So I uninstalled libx264 (apt-get remove x264), went to my home directory, and retrieved the x264 files using git. I ran ./configure in the new folder, and incidentally got the cryptic error " ambiguous argument 'origin/master': unknown revision or path not in the working tree." I was told I could run make and so I did; the output is attached to this email in the text file make_output.txt.gz, and there were some warnings. Then I ran checkinstall, which ran well although it tried to set permissions on some nonexistent files. The output of that is attached to this email in checkinstall_output.txt. After doing this, I went back to my ffmpeg directory and ran ./configure as: ./configure --enable-gpl --enable-libdc1394 --enable-libfaac --enable-libfaad --enable-libfaadbin --enable-libgsm --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libx264 But continue to get the error "x264 not found." Running dpkg-l shows x264 in the list of packages, however. Running 'whereis x264' gives me '/usr/local/bin/x264' and running "find -name 'x264" gives me: ./home/stephen/x264 ./home/stephen/x264/x264 ./usr/share/doc/x264 ./usr/local/bin/x264 config.err.gz for ffmpeg is also attached to this email. I'd really appreciate any insight you could give! Thanks, Stephen

ffmpeg: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libavcodec.so.52: undefined symbol: av_lfg_init
by tanim.islam＠gmail.com 12 Nov '08

Hello: I have compiled ffmpeg from svn revision 15802, libswscale revision 27904. I compile ffmpeg on Ubuntu intrepid, and gcc --version output is "gcc (Ubuntu 4.3.2-1ubuntu11) 4.3.2." I compile ffmpeg with the following flags, ./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-nonfree --enable-libamr-nb --enable-libamr-wb --enable-libfaac --enable-libfaad --enable-gpl --enable-libdirac --enable-libx264 --enable-libxvid --enable-libvorbis --enable-libtheora --enable-libgsm --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libschroedinger --enable-libspeex --enable-swscale --disable-ffserver --enable-libdc1394 --enable-shared --disable-static --enable-postproc ffmpeg compiles, but when I run it I get the following error: ffmpeg: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libavcodec.so.52: undefined symbol: av_lfg_init Tanim Islam

What configure options can I use to make ffmpeg faster?
by dennis.volodomanov＠conceiva.com 12 Nov '08

12 Nov '08

Hello all, I had to disable MMX optimizations, because they cause WMV files to crash ffmpeg, and now the speed of decoding/encoding has dropped 2-3 times (according to fps). Can I enable/disable some more options to make ffmpeg work faster? I'm trying different builds with different options, but they all seem to be more-or-less same speed. Thanks in advance, Dennis

Shared Libraries & OS X 10.5
by remo.meier＠tik.ee.ethz.ch 12 Nov '08

Hi I'm trying to compile ffmpeg with some own code into a shared library. It works well for Linux and Windows, but I have some problems with OS X. The gcc call looks like: gcc -dynamiclib -Wl,-single_module" -Wl,-read_only_relocs,suppress -Wl,-dynamic,-search_paths_first" -rdynamic" -L/Users/xy/Documents/Workspace/ffmpeg/libavdevice"/> -L/Users/xy/Documents/Workspace/ffmpeg/libavformat" -L/Users/xy/Documents/Workspace/ffmpeg/libavcodec" -L/Users/xy/Documents/Workspace/ffmpeg/libavutil" mycode.o" -o libmycode.jnilib -lavdevice -lavformat -lavcodec -lavutil -lz -lbz2 The error message is (truncated, around 200 lines long): [exec] ld: warning codegen in _av_log_default_callback (offset 0x00000030) prevents image from loading in dyld shared cache [exec] ld: warning codegen in _av_log_default_callback (offset 0x00000059) prevents image from loading in dyld shared cache [exec] ld: warning codegen in _av_log_default_callback (offset 0x00000094) prevents image from loading in dyld shared cache [exec] ld: warning codegen in _av_log_default_callback (offset 0x00000099) prevents image from loading in dyld shared cache [exec] ld: warning codegen in _av_vlog (offset 0x00000002) prevents image from loading in dyld shared cache [exec] ld: warning codegen in _av_log_get_level (offset 0x00000001) prevents image from loading in dyld shared cache [exec] ld: warning codegen in _av_log_set_level (offset 0x00000005) prevents image from loading in dyld shared cache [exec] ld: warning codegen in _av_log_set_callback (offset 0x00000005) prevents image from loading in dyld shared cache [exec] ld: warning codegen in _av_log (offset 0x00000028) prevents image from loading in dyld shared cache [exec] ld: absolute addressing (perhaps -mdynamic-no-pic) used in _av_register_all from /Users/remmeier/Documents/Workspace/ffmpeg/libavformat/libavformat.a(allformats.o) not allowed in slidable image [exec] collect2: ld returned 1 exit status A disabled mmx as suggested some time ago, but it does not help. Any ideas? Or should I better use OS X 10.3 or 10.4 (it worked fine half a year ago)? Thanks, Remo

Panasonic SD9 1920x1080 25p Decode Problem SOLVED
by bart.delva＠labolamot.be 12 Nov '08

Hi Yves, Of course I can give you a sample ... What is easiest way to send you this ? Smallest that I have is 10MB. The problem however was already touched on this mailing list in the past .. Apparantly adding -copyts to the command solved the problem. But . This camera shoots in 1080p at 25 frames. If I playback these native files on VLC player they give an interlaced playback . ffmpeg recognizes the input as YUV420P and encodes accordingly to progressive output. If I encode to another full HD file in progressive output they play as interlaced on VLC player . Any idea about this ?
