video4linux2 - NTSC webcam
by knox1808＠yahoo.com 29 Jan '10

I'm hoping someone can lead me in the right direction.? I've upgraded my OLD debian to ubuntu and noticed my old-fashioned way of capturing video from my webcam doesn't work anymore.? I used to be able to call ffmpeg with: ffmpeg -vd /dev/video0 -s 320x240 test.flv I noticed that ffmpeg now requires: ffmpeg -f video4linux2 -i /dev/video0 However, I am getting errors about incorrect parameters with the following: ffmpeg -f video4linux2 -i /dev/video0 -s 320x240 -an test.flv FFmpeg version SVN-rUNKNOWN, Copyright (c) 2000-2007 Fabrice Bellard, et al. ? configuration: --enable-gpl --enable-pp --enable-swscaler --enable-pthreads --enable-libvorbis --enable-libtheora --enable-libogg --enable-libgsm --enable-dc1394 --disable-debug --enable-shared --prefix=/usr ? libavutil version: 1d.49.3.0 ? libavcodec version: 1d.51.38.0 ? libavformat version: 1d.51.10.0 ? built on Mar 12 2008 14:31:53, gcc: 4.2.3 (Ubuntu 4.2.3-2ubuntu4) [video4linux2 @ 0xb7fc7110]Missing/Wrong parameters /dev/video0: Error while opening file I've changed permissions to /dev/video0 with chmod g+rw /dev/video0 since I had issues like that in the past. I must be missing some newly-required parameters?? In a more recent SVN (June 22nd), I got a similar error, but it had text more like "Incorrect width, height, or rate". Any help is appreciated.

[Ffmpeg-user] FFMPEG VDPAU but no DxVA?
by soljin＠gmail.com 26 Dec '09

26 Dec '09

I see FFMPEG is developing VDPAU support but still no DxVA support. It's just strange to see FFMPEG adding support for not only a platform specific but also hardware specific API. With DxVA it's at least hardware independent (to a degree). Also DxVA is an established API that has been used for quite a while now. Am I missing something or is this just strange? Developer preference? Grave Injustice? I would love to see FFMPEG support DxVA as it could eventually lead to hardware acceleration in tasty things like XBMC Windows. I think cross platform support for hardware accelerated h.264 is the right direction for FFMPEG. I am currently running a build of XBMC VDPAU and would love to offer the same performance to my friends running windows. Many people just aren't comfortable with Linux. -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/FFMPEG-VDPAU-but-no-DxVA--tp22613357p22613357.html Sent from the FFmpeg-users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

curious difference in playing same asset via file:// and udp://
by sheshadri.mantha＠schange.com 23 Nov '09

hi; i have a curious situation. we are using a player that is modeled after ffplay. the issue is with differences in playing the same asset via file:// or udp:// our ffmpeg build details listed below and the platform is Win32. the offending asset has following details -- snip -- FFmpeg version SVN-r15985, Copyright (c) 2000-2008 Fabrice Bellard, et al. configuration: --enable-mmx --enable-memalign-hack --disable-debug --enable-shared --disable-static --enable-network --extra-cflags=-DSCHG_MOD -fno-common libavutil 49.12. 0 / 49.12. 0 libavcodec 52. 6. 0 / 52. 6. 0 libavformat 52.23. 1 / 52.23. 1 libavdevice 52. 1. 0 / 52. 1. 0 built on Jun 18 2009 08:24:46, gcc: 4.2.1-sjlj (mingw32-2) Input #0, mpegts, from 'c:/dvds/incredibles.ts': Duration: 00:04:42.40, start: 0.213000, bitrate: 4590 kb/s Program 1 Stream #0.0[0x10]: Video: mpeg2video, yuv420p, 720x576 [PAR 64:45 DAR 16:9], 9800 kb/s, 25.00 tb(r) Stream #0.1[0x12]: Audio: mp2, 48000 Hz, stereo, s16, 128 kb/s Stream #0.2[0x13]: Audio: mp2, 48000 Hz, stereo, s16, 128 kb/s -- end snip -- this clip when played using the file:// url, does not report *any* warnings or errors. however when the same clip is played using udp://0.0.0.0?localport=9090 url, then there are *tons* of sampling errors, macroblock errors and synch errors (not claiming i know what they mean) -- snip-- [FFMPeg->]:ac-tex damaged at 41 31 [FFMPeg->]:invalid cbp at 8 6 [FFMPeg->]:mb incr damaged [FFMPeg->]:ac-tex damaged at 6 8 [FFMPeg->]:ac-tex damaged at 6 9 [FFMPeg->]:ac-tex damaged at 9 10 [FFMPeg->]:ac-tex damaged at 5 11 [FFMPeg->]:invalid cbp at 2 12 [FFMPeg->]:ac-tex damaged at 31 13 [FFMPeg->]:invalid mb type in P Frame at 1 14 [FFMPeg->]:slice mismatch [FFMPeg->]:ac-tex damaged at 24 18 [FFMPeg->]:slice mismatch [FFMPeg->]:mb incr damaged [FFMPeg->]:ac-tex damaged at 5 21 [FFMPeg->]:ac-tex damaged at 8 22 [FFMPeg->]:invalid mb type in P Frame at 7 23 [FFMPeg->]:invalid mb type in P Frame at 1 24 [FFMPeg->]:mb incr damaged [FFMPeg->]:ac-tex damaged at 10 26 [FFMPeg->]:slice mismatch [FFMPeg->]:ac-tex damaged at 4 31 [FFMPeg->]:invalid cbp at 5 32 [FFMPeg->]:invalid cbp at 5 33 [FFMPeg->]:invalid cbp at 5 34 [FFMPeg->]:invalid cbp at 5 35 [FFMPeg->]:Warning MVs not available -- end snip-- the UDP broadcast is either generated by a VOD server or by VLC streaming w/in a private network. BTW: other lower bitrate (~3Mb/sec) assets do play well via UDP (again from same source, again w/in local network). I've tried to increase the buffer-size of udp by changing the url to: udp://0.0.0.0?localport=9090&buffer_size=2097152 but that does nothing... perhaps SO_RCVBUF is not implemented in winsock... any thoughts or suggestions? Kindest regards, S-

FFMpeg Support on different audio and video codecs
by ambedkumar＠gmail.com 20 Nov '09

20 Nov '09

Hi, After going through the codec's listed at:- http://ffmpeg.org/general.html I had few queries on few codecs:- 1.) For Audio AAC, mainly there are three profiles as:- Low complexity profile (AAC LC), Main profile (AAC Main) and Scalable sampling rate profile (AAC SSR) so does FFMpeg supports all of them? What about AAC LTP and HE-AAC Profile (AAC LC with SBR) ? Also 3GPP and 3GPP2 AAC is supported? 2.) For AVI audio like:- AVI PCM is supported by FFMpeg? 3.) The video codecs supported like:- H.263, H.264/MPEG-4 are as per 3GPP and 3GPP2 formats? Please let me know your comments on the above. -- Thanks and Regards, Ambed Kumar

mp4 codec - the libs story

So here is an obvious one I used to -- with a previous build of ffmpeg use -vcodec libx264 with my more recent buld ( mid sept ) i use -vcodec libxvid -vcodec mpeg4 so this is due to the libs that i compiled it with --yes? is there anything that is better than another? and why? what might be suggested. -here is my ffmpeg vers FFmpeg version SVN-r19890, Copyright (c) 2000-2009 Fabrice Bellard, et al. configuration: --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libtheora --enable-libvorbis --enable-libfaac --enable-libfaad --disable-mmx --enable-shared --enable-libxvid --enable-gpl --enable-nonfree libavutil 50. 3. 0 / 50. 3. 0 libavcodec 52.35. 0 / 52.35. 0 libavformat 52.38. 0 / 52.38. 0 libavdevice 52. 2. 0 / 52. 2. 0 libswscale 0. 7. 1 / 0. 7. 1 built on Sep 16 2009 18:42:46, gcc: 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-44) I suppose i wish to have a greater understanding of the libs. and I wish to make the best possible files. example if the target was ipod --- what is suggested? and is that same for web delivery? what is the diff? Thanks! jS

libfaac unable to encode 192kb/s and more?
by burner＠clanpips.dk 05 Nov '09

When trying to encode acc in 192kb/s, but the result is a real bad 135~155 kb/s. This happens at all bitrates over 128k These settings worked fine with older ffmpeg builds, but after upgrading something broke. [Ffmpeg-user] transcoding AVHCD
by drwowe＠yahoo.com 02 Nov '09

02 Nov '09

Hello, I've tried searching for an answer but it seems like everybody wants to convert from AVHCD to something else. My question is how to convert a 1080P x264 mkv video to AVHCD, using either ffmpeg or mencoder? I can't find the right combination of args. If someone could give an example command line as a starting point I'd be grateful. The goal is to burn high-definition videos I downloaded to DVDR media. My player supports HD on DVDR but only in AVHCD format. -- View this message in context: http://old.nabble.com/transcoding-AVHCD-tp26105062p26105062.html Sent from the FFmpeg-users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Extracting AC3 from a DVD
by richard＠laughingshrews.net 01 Nov '09

01 Nov '09

Hi, I am trying to extract the contents of a DVD chapter by chapter, and reauthor the main movie with dvdauthor. To do this, I am extracting the video and main audio streams with ffmpeg (SVN-r20330) , then remultiplexing with mplex. For most DVDs, this works well. However, for some, mplex doesn't like the AC3 stream, claiming: **ERROR: [mplex] File tc.ac3 unrecogniseable! **ERROR: [mplex] Unrecogniseable file(s)... exiting. When I extract the AC3 with extract_a52 (from the liba52 distribution) bbdmux or tcdemux, it also gives the same error (the AC3 file they extract is identical). So why is this an ffmpeg question...? Because the one tool I *can* get to work is a very old version of ffmpeg (SVN-r8320). I assume the reason is that this version pre-dates the replacement of liba52 with ffmpeg's own AC3 library. But in that case, why doesn't extract_a52 work? Any ideas? Many thanks, Richard
