video4linux2 - NTSC webcam
by knox1808＠yahoo.com 29 Jan '10

I'm hoping someone can lead me in the right direction.? I've upgraded my OLD debian to ubuntu and noticed my old-fashioned way of capturing video from my webcam doesn't work anymore.? I used to be able to call ffmpeg with: ffmpeg -vd /dev/video0 -s 320x240 test.flv I noticed that ffmpeg now requires: ffmpeg -f video4linux2 -i /dev/video0 However, I am getting errors about incorrect parameters with the following: ffmpeg -f video4linux2 -i /dev/video0 -s 320x240 -an test.flv FFmpeg version SVN-rUNKNOWN, Copyright (c) 2000-2007 Fabrice Bellard, et al. ? configuration: --enable-gpl --enable-pp --enable-swscaler --enable-pthreads --enable-libvorbis --enable-libtheora --enable-libogg --enable-libgsm --enable-dc1394 --disable-debug --enable-shared --prefix=/usr ? libavutil version: 1d.49.3.0 ? libavcodec version: 1d.51.38.0 ? libavformat version: 1d.51.10.0 ? built on Mar 12 2008 14:31:53, gcc: 4.2.3 (Ubuntu 4.2.3-2ubuntu4) [video4linux2 @ 0xb7fc7110]Missing/Wrong parameters /dev/video0: Error while opening file I've changed permissions to /dev/video0 with chmod g+rw /dev/video0 since I had issues like that in the past. I must be missing some newly-required parameters?? In a more recent SVN (June 22nd), I got a similar error, but it had text more like "Incorrect width, height, or rate". Any help is appreciated.

smooth slow motion?
by mikko.rapeli＠iki.fi 10 Jan '10

10 Jan '10

Hello, I'd like to slow down some 720p30 videos and make it smooth with some kind of motion compensation or resampling, or what ever it's really called. I found a few instructions like http://www.renomath.org/ejolson/video/slowmot/ and http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2009/02/09/butter-smooth-slow-motion/ but they are either for interlaced video or done with Windows tools. Is there a way to get smooth slow motion from progressive video with ffmpeg and some other tools? Thanks, -Mikko

syncing video and audio when grabbing bktr
by hans＠stare.cz 02 Jan '10

02 Jan '10

Scenario: some old VHS tapes played in a Sony SLV-E710EE VCR, video output goes into a composite capture card, audio output from the VCR goes into the computers's sound card. All this on OpenBSD (see dmesg below). This is how I try to record the tape with ffmpeg: $ ffmpeg -y -v 1 -tvstd pal -isync -f oss -ar 48000 -ac 2 -i /dev/audio0 \ -f bktr -r 25 -s 768x576 -i /dev/bktr0 -vcodec rawvideo -acodec pcm_s16le \ out.avi During the capture, I get a lot of error messages saying SLEPT NO signals - 8866 microseconds late - the number of microseconds varies anywhere between 4000 and 20000. The resulting video (out.avi) apparently is not well synced - audio is lagging behind video, and the lag seems to be getting worse. Does it have anything to do with the above error message? What exactly does the message mean anyway? Who tried to SLEEP for NO signals? What was X microseconds late behind what? (Looking at the source, it seems that fmpeg didn't get last frame's time from bktr, and tries to do some computation using av_gettime() to figure out if it's later than the last frame plus microseconds-per-frame, but I'm not sure. If that is the case, isn't my bktr crappy in the first place, if it doesn't tell the driver/application the timestamps?) Where should I be looking for the cause of this? The VCR? When viewing the analog tape itself on a TV, the audio and video seem to be perfectly in sync. I experince the very same problem with six different VHS tapes. The audio card? I have done multitrack recording on that card and never had any problem. The samplerate? The capture card (bktr)? ffmpeg's interface to bktr? What can I do in ffmpeg to ensure I stay in sync? Is -isync supposed to help me with this? Thank you for your time Jan PS: The disk I am writing to _is_ fast enough (I can write to it with speed a multiple of the bitrate of what I am writing with ffmpeg). How long is the playback time of a video file?
by dotancohen＠gmail.com 31 Dec '09

I am writing an application that combines video and subtitle files that are split across several files. For the subtitles I need to know how much time to offset. How can I determine the playback time of a video file? Thanks in advance. -- Dotan Cohen http://what-is-what.com http://gibberish.co.il

how to cut off video: and have a start of "0"
by williamottley＠gmail.com 31 Dec '09

Hello all, I've been using -ss 5 -itsoffset 5 in my ffmpeg conversion. it works, and the first 5 seconds have been taken off, BUT, when i put it in the player, the "time" shows up right away as 5, and not 0 so when someone is looking at the video the start time is set to 5.. how can i set it back to 0? The whole length should be the length of the original video minus 5 seconds. But it doesn't show that, it shows the same "ending" and the start is "5" I hope i'm explaining myself properly. how does one go about taking off the first 5 seconds, and having the video show up at 0 position, (and not 5) thanks! -- Everything that has, did and will happen in your life, exists now, within you (William Ottley) Every universe is covered by seven layers ? earth, water, fire, air, sky, the total energy and false ego ? each ten times greater than the previous one. There are innumerable universes besides this one, and although they are unlimitedly large, they move about like atoms in You. Therefore You are called unlimited (Bhagavata Purana 6.16.37)

PAL VHS to PAL DVD: flickery motion; fields swapped/missing?
by eccn＠spherica.demon.co.uk 31 Dec '09

31 Dec '09

Season's Greetings from a ffmpeg newbie :) BACKGROUND: I'm trying to copy VHS camcorder material to DVD, using the following path: BT878 PCI video capture card (good pics in lin & win) Standard soundblaster soundcard for audio track Dscaler (win app for capturing) Dscaler generates the highest possible quality AVI file: 768x576, HUFFYUV encoding. I leave any deinterlacing options off to preserve the original interlacing. Then in Linux I issue: ffmpeg -i input.avi -aspect 4:3 -target pal-dvd output.mpg I convert output.mpg to a .iso using DeVeDe (with any de-interlacing disabled), then burn it to disc with K3B. PROBLEM: The final DVD (played on a fairly cheap old domestic player) comes out clearly, but all motion is flickering, perhaps as if odd/even fields have been swapped or are missing. Unfortunately I know of no way to analyse this motion defect, and wonder if I'm missing something obvious for more perfect encoding? Hearing from anybody who can most perfectly convert analog video (VHS/8mm) to DVD is welcome!! Warm regards Matt, Wrexham, UK

How to reduce audio channels?
by jks＠iname.com 31 Dec '09

Q 1: I have some mp3 files I created from atsc transport stream files like this: ffmpeg -i input.ts -vn -acodec copy output.mp3 The problem is that I want to have only the two stereo channels, and I have five or six. How do I get only the left and right channels? Q 2: I want to take audio files and use them for ringtones. To save space I want to convert the stereo audio to mono. How do I do this?
