Is mixing of audio channels happening by default in ffmpeg?
by Sam Marrocco 21 Mar '14

I have an uncompressed Quicktime with 8 tracks of audio (in addition to it's one video and one Timecode track). I am transcoding it to Quicktime Prores with the following command line (and results): "ffmpeg-20130507-git-399f6ef-win64-static\bin\ffmpeg.exe" -i "C:\Users\root\Desktop\MultiChannel.mov" -vcodec prores_ks -pix_fmt yuv444p10le -profile:v 3 -acodec copy -t 1 -f mov "D:\\MultiChannel\MultiChannel.mov" ffmpeg version N-52837-g399f6ef Copyright (c) 2000-2013 the FFmpeg developers built on May 7 2013 01:14:14 with gcc 4.7.3 (GCC) configuration: --enable-gpl --enable-version3 --disable-w32threads --enable-avisynth --enable-bzlib --enable-fontconfig --enable-frei0r --enable-gnutls --enable-iconv --enable-libass --enable-libbluray --enable-libcaca --enable-libfreetype --enable-libgsm --enable-libilbc --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libopencore-amrnb --enable-libopencore-amrwb --enable-libopenjpeg --enable-libopus --enable-librtmp --enable-libschroedinger --enable-libsoxr --enable-libspeex --enable-libtheora --enable-libtwolame --enable-libvo-aacenc --enable-libvo-amrwbenc --enable-libvorbis --enable-libvpx --enable-libx264 --enable-libxavs --enable-libxvid --enable-zlib libavutil 52. 29.100 / 52. 29.100 libavcodec 55. 7.100 / 55. 7.100 libavformat 55. 4.101 / 55. 4.101 libavdevice 55. 0.100 / 55. 0.100 libavfilter 3. 63.101 / 3. 63.101 libswscale 2. 2.100 / 2. 2.100 libswresample 0. 17.102 / 0. 17.102 libpostproc 52. 3.100 / 52. 3.100 [mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2 @ 000000000239e760] Stream #1: not enough frames to estimate rate; Best way to scale interlaced video
by Massimo Battistel 07 Mar '14

07 Mar '14

hello, I have to scale 16:9 interlaced 1080i video down to PAL 576i 4:3 with black bars. This was attempt #1: ffmpeg -i interlaced1080i.mp4 -vcodec rawvideo -vf scale=w=720:h=432:interl=1,pad=720:576:0:72 -acodec copy out.mp4 Easy and fast. But horizontal resolution was halved. It looks like every row was repeated 2 times. This is well noticeable especially on static areas of video. When image is moving it looks better. Is this the normal behavior? How does interlaced aware scaling works? Attempt #2 ffmpeg -i interlaced1080i.mp4 -vcodec rawvideo -vf yadif=1:0,scale=w=720:h=432:interl=0,pad=720:576:0:72,tinterlace=4 -acodec copy out.mp4 Higher cpu/memory usage. Image quality is much better on static areas of video (I have the full resolution), while moving parts are a bit worse. Is it possbile to do a better scaling? Any help of link to doc is welcome. thanks, MB

Add audio at specific time in video
by Jay Sardhara 03 Mar '14

03 Mar '14

I want to add a *.m4a audio of 5s duration to a *.mp4 video file. I have already tried the -itsoffset command of ffmpeg. ffmpeg -i a.mp4 -itsoffset 00:00:10 -i b.m4a -map 0:0 -map 1:0 -preset ultrafast o.mp4 The problem is it does start at 00:00:10 but it keeps repeating after every 10s. (It is noticed only when you play the whole video w/o touching seekbar) Also other problem is that when I play this video on android then audio starts from beginning. While it plays fine with VLC. *Expected O/p* Silence in video till specified time, then my audio, and again silence after audio How to achieve above result ?

Is this a video file?
by Tom Horsley 01 Mar '14

01 Mar '14

I thought it would be simple to use ffprobe to ask the question: "Is this a video file?", but it turns out to be more complicated than I thought :-). For instance, a plain text file shows up with a codec_type of video because, of course, it could be rendered as video. So is there a simple way to ask if a file is already video? I'm trying to find all the videos in a directory with all sorts of different codecs, file extensions, and wot-not that are mixed with lots of other kinds of files as well.

[HELP] FFmpeg android compillation (mp4 + h264)
by Oleg Antsiferov 28 Feb '14

28 Feb '14

Hi! Let me descripe my task: I hane many gifs (not on a device) encoded as mp4 files (on a device) with h264 codec (like so avconv -r 15 -i %s/%%03d.png -an -c:v libx264 -s %dx%d -profile:v baseline -r 15 %s). So, I need to decode mp4-s to get frames and build animations on android. For decoding purposes I want to use ffmpeg, but really don't know which options need to be included in ./configure (I just want use mp4 container and h264 decoder and create .so libs with possible smalles size) to compile it. And I also need to have a gpu support if it's possible for ffmpeg. Could you, please, provide all the necessary options to compile ffmpeg? Thanks, olle

video-stream client
by Guido Budack 28 Feb '14

28 Feb '14

Hi folks, obviously it is possible for ffmpeg too to stream video/audio over http/the web. my question : how to connect to a client and if so which one is to prefer? Critical cornerstones are bandwidth resp. compression and the streams should be split-able or separate transmitted. The necessary bandwidth should be as low as possible. I just need 12-15 pics/sec of medium quality, the audio quality indeed should be good to very good. Any suggestions? Greets Gee

Fwd: pipe: input with MOOV type video
by Brian Quandt 28 Feb '14

28 Feb '14

I realize that the reason you normally can't pipe input from a MOOV type file (quicktime, mp4, etc), is that the details about the file are at EOF. What about if I know all the file params and codec params beforehand. Can I create a ffmpeg command line with all the details so it can decode the input when piped in from stdin? For instance, say I have a file sitting out on the network, and I use ffprobe to query the file (which knows how to do http seeks, therefore it can grab the details of the mp4), save such results locally. Then I'd use something like curl to grab the file and pipe into ffmpeg for continued processing. Why use curl you might ask versus just letting ffmpeg's internal http support grab stuff, the answer is ffmpeg works great on reliable connections but it's builtin support for dropped connections and the like are a bit weak, and I can build some more robust network handling in front of ffmpeg.

CBR with libvpx using latest ffmpeg
by Manas Bhatnagar 27 Feb '14

27 Feb '14

Hello, Just updating this in case anyone else tries to do something similar. I have been working on this, trying to produce media files with predictable filesizes/bitrates using ffmpeg/libvpx. I am able to get good results using a 2-pass approach. ************************************************* ffmpeg -i video.mkv -pass 1 -s 640x357 -c:v libvpx -b:v 450k -minrate:v 450k -maxrate:v 450k -bufsize 128k -threads 4 -f rawvideo -an -y /dev/null ffmpeg -i video.mkv -pass 2 -s 640x357 -c:v libvpx -b:v 450k -minrate:v 450k -maxrate:v 450k -bufsize 128k -q:a -1 -threads 4 video.webm ************************************************* This is what works to my satisfaction. Thanks, Manas

Large file sizes on recording.
by Leonard Bogard 27 Feb '14

27 Feb '14

I'm using a bash script to on a linux (Ubuntu) machine to record and HLS live stream to a remote Wowza server for live services. The services usually run for about 1.5 hours. I'm using a Decklink SDI video input card. I'm splitting the output from bmdcapture (using "tee") to two separate ffmpeg instances, the first for HLS and the second for recording to an mp4 file. For a while I've been recording at 720x400 at 30 fps using libx264 with "-vcodec libx264 -preset medium -vb 1000k -vprofile baseline -level 3.1 -pix_fmt yuv420p" which would generally give me a file size around 800 MB on average. Of course this is not HD and we have all this expensive HD equipment that gives us HD but I'm not recording HD with these parameters. Naturally, my boss wants HD and I want to give it to him. Problem is, with the new parameters that keeps the CPU utilization to about 90-110% (as low as I could get it on the 4 core processor last night while playing around with the parameters) the file size is going to be somewhere around 1.7 terabytes. Here's the recording part of the bash script: /home/suser/bin/ffmpeg -nostats -itsoffset -0.2 -i - \ \ -copytb -1 \ -async -1 $OUTFILEAUDIO \ -vcodec libx264 -preset veryfast -crf 22 -vprofile baseline -level 4.1 -pix_fmt yuv420p \ -flags +ilme+ildct \ -y $OUTFILE \ < "$fifoFILEname" 2>> liveFILE.log & ffmpegFILEpid=$! The current output from this line is 1280x720 @59.95 fps. I'm thinking that I'm probably not getting it right since I've seen cameras able to record HD to a much smaller file on the fly from a live source. If not, is there some post-processing I can do on the file to make it much smaller? Should I record to a different format first if there is? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Capturing and time / timecode
by Bouke (VideoToolShed) 27 Feb '14

Capturing from a BM source to files intended for further processing, and i would like to be able to sync them to a common timesource, so adding timecode to the files. But i have no clue how to find out when exactly the capture process starts / how long frames are in 'any' buffer/pipeline. Is there a trick to get this information, or force FFmpeg to start at an known time? thx, Bouke VideoToolShed van Oldenbarneveltstraat 33 6512 AS NIJMEGEN, the Netherlands +31 24 3553311

live rawimage feed to h264 file issues
by Olivier Langlois 27 Feb '14

27 Feb '14

Hi, with this command in a bash script: ffmpeg -f rawvideo -video_size 296x296 -pixel_format bgr24 -framerate 30 -i /dev/stdin \ -c:v libx264 -preset superfast -profile:v main -level 4.1 -pix_fmt yuv420p \ -x264opts keyint=60:bframes=2:ref=1 -maxrate 400k -bufsize 800k -shortest $4.mkv \ &>> /tmp/pipe_ffmpeg.out I am feeding ffmpeg with a live rawimage feed. It is working but I have 2 probably small issues: 1. The raw images are bitmaps with upside down rows (like standard bmp file images format). ie: the first row is the bottom most row of the picture. This result into having the output video image upside down. Is there an efficient way to fix that? There must be one as my feed is essentially a sequence of Microsoft BMP images minus the file header. 2. In theory my live feed should be 30 fps but in reality, it is more like ~10fps. The consequence is that the output movie playback feels like 10x faster than the real speed. Is this possible to address that with ffmpeg? Maybe to reuse the same frame for a couple of frames until a new frame becomes available. thank you in advance for your advices

Concatenate mp4 file
by frafart＠free.fr 27 Feb '14

27 Feb '14

Hello, I want to concatenate 2 mp4 file, originated from an stream. Here what I do : - Generate TS file from an mpegts udp stream with ffmpeg segment (file001.ts and file002.ts). - Convert this ts to mp4 (h264/aacplus) (file001.mp4 and file002.mp4) - Concatenate this mp4 file : - Transform mp4 to ts (newsfile001.ts and newfile002.ts) - Concat TS to mp4 (file001_002.mp4). (source http://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/How%20to%20concatenate%20(join,%20merge)%20medi…) The resulting file001_002.mp4 has an audible problem at the merge point. For testing purpose, I try this : - cat the 2 TS file in one - convert this new TS file with the same command It's ok. I think my problem is in the convertion ts->mp4 but I don't find it. Question on FFMPEG MpegPS demuxer
by Sunitha Aaraveti 27 Feb '14

27 Feb '14

Hi, In libavformat/utils.c the function "estimate_timings_from_pts" is used for MpegPs streams to calculate the total duration of the file/stream, there is do { ret = ff_read_packet(ic, pkt); } while(ret == AVERROR(EAGAIN)); This ff_read_packet always returns -11 .The totalduration of few VBR mpeg ps streams is coming zero because of this,Can you please suggest the wayforward. Regards -Sunitha

How to get an annexb h264 frame by av_read_frame
by lijing0010＠gmail.com 26 Feb '14

26 Feb '14

hi Do I have to check the extradata[0] to see if it's avcc or annexb, and do a corresponding convert? Or is there any easy way to get the annexb h264 frame by av_read_frame() directly? Frames per second Conceptual Details.
by whoami Jils 25 Feb '14

25 Feb '14

i am a newbie and trying to understand the concepts behind ffmpeg/video. fps -> frame per second , for example 25fps -> 25 frames are captured in a second. and 25 frames need to be displayed in a second [ correct me if i am wrong? ] Now i have written a simple video player in ffmpeg to display. i read frames by av_read_frame(), if fps is 25, then does av_read_frame() returns 25 frames per second? how can i relate it?

Frame Pts is it the right way to calculate ?
by whoami Jils 25 Feb '14

25 Feb '14

Hi, 1) I have a AVStream of Video from FormatContext. [ avstream ] 2) Read Packet 3) Decode packet if it is from video. 4) Now Display the below. Packet DTS -> 7200.00 [ from packet ] Frame PTS -> -9223372036854775808.000000 stream time_base -> 0.000011 Offset -> 0.080000 [ pts * time_base ] double pts = (double) packet.dts; printf (" dts of packet %f , Frame pts: %f, timeBase %f Offset: %f ",pts, (double)pFrame->pts, av_q2d (avstream->time_base) , pts *av_q2d(avstream->time_base)); 1) Why Frame pts is negative ? is it valid ? 2) Do i need to consider Frame pts from packet DTS [ ie: frame pts = packet dts ] Thanks for your help.

avformat_find_stream_info does not provide me information.
by whoami Jils 25 Feb '14

25 Feb '14

1) What i am trying? -> understanding ffmpeg, writting new video player in android. 2) avformat_find_stream_info returns nothing. :( if (avformat_open_input(&pFormatCtx, "rtsp://<ip>:<port>", NULL, NULL) != 0) { return -1; } AVDictionary *opts=NULL; if (avformat_find_stream_info(pFormatCtx, &opts) < 0) { LOGD (" uNABLE TO GET STREAM INFO .."); return -1; // Couldn't find stream information } 3) print av_dict_count(opts) , and it give me the value zero [ 0 ]. Is it expected behavior or did i miss something?

Is it safe? (DV AVI > 4 gig)
by Bouke (VideoToolShed) 24 Feb '14

24 Feb '14

Creating long ( > 4 gig) DV AVI files. Now, AVI specs 'somehow' (i have no clue to the exact specs) state that there is a 2 or 4 gig file size limit. FFmpeg (actually, i pipe FFmpeg to FFmbc to get my setup working) seems to have no problem creating larger files, and they seem to work fine in my shop. But, what trouble to expect when these files go out into the wild? Any known problems with NLE's and these files that I should be aware of? thx, Bouke VideoToolShed van Oldenbarneveltstraat 33 6512 AS NIJMEGEN, the Netherlands +31 24 3553311

Overlaying watermark command line
by Hugo Garcia-Cotte 24 Feb '14

24 Feb '14

Hello :-) I use a simple command line to overlay a png over a mp4 on an android device ffmpeg -y -i movie.mp4 -i watermark.png -filter_complex overlay -strict -2 movieWithOvelray.mp4 It totally works, but takes an average 10 minutes for a 25s 720p video. (while other operations took couple of seconds on the same device with the same ffmpeg binary) Is there an easy way to optimise this ?
