Issue with reading out correct Color Ranges (tv, pc) and color primaries (bt709, bt601) Info at AVCIntra- and MPEG2-MXFs
by Christoph Gerstbauer 16 Jun '14

16 Jun '14

Hello, I am testing some MXFs probes with different codecs: AVC-Intra, DNxHD, XDCAMHD422 and IMX50. When opening the mxfs with ffprobe or ffmpeg, the program shows me following Color Range and ITU-Recommendation Color Form in brackets at the end of the pixel_format information ( e.g. yuv422p10le(pc,bt709) ): a) AVC-Intra: (pc,bt709) b) DNxHD: no info c) IMX50: (tv) d) XDCAMHD422: (tv, bt709) As I know it: "tv" : 16-235 / 64-940 limited Video ranges "pc" : Full Range 0-255 / 0-1023 "bt709": Standard HDTV YCbCr colorhandling / color primaries "bt601": Standard SDTV YCbCr colorhandling / color primaries Question(s) 1: Where does ffmpeg get these information packet? From the container itself? And why is at IMX50 no bt601 information? I made some tests with MXF BMX -> mxf2raw and mxfdump. With mxfdump I can check the set Color Ranges in the MXF container by dumping the file information into text file an searching for these KLVs: BlackRefLevel WhiteReflevel ColorRange And these KLVs are always the same in IMX50 and XDCAMHD422: 16 235 225 00 00 00 10 00 00 00 eb 00 00 00 e1 So the "tv" info in ffmpeg seems correct for me. When I check the DNxHD file, there is no info in the mxf dump about BlackRefLevel, WhiteRefLevel and ColorRange -> ffmpeg does not show the info "tv" or "pc" -> seems correct. BUT: When opening AVC INTRA files there are 2 groups: 1.) NO information in mxfdump about BlackRefLevel, WhiteRefLevel and ColorRange 2.) existing information in mxfdump: BlackRefLevel 64/ WhiteRefLevel 940 / ColorRange 897 -> that means for me "tv" in ffmpeg language. But ffmpeg always show "pc" -> Full Range 0-255 / 0-1023 Question(s) 2: Where does ffmpeg get the information packet from the MXF which is forcing to show "pc"? Or is ffmpeg guessing the Color Range when it gets a specific codec (MPEG2 -> "tv" / AVCI -> "pc")? I hope you can help, I am very confused about that. For me it seems that the MPEG2 Codecs IMX50 and XDCAMHD are very well standardized for MXF. But DNxHD and AVC-INTRA are not. Best Regards Christoph

chapter mark on MP4: ffmpeg produces it in which flavour?
by Zhang Weiwu 14 Jun '14

14 Jun '14

The documents says adding chapter marks is as simple as applying metadata file: http://www.ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-formats.html#Metadata The document however wasn't specific to .mp4 format (the part specific about .mp4 is about segments, which doesn't look like chapter to me). Wikipedia says .mp4 has two kinds of chapter-marks: Quote from wikipedia: > 1) In specially formatted text track (QuickTime); 2) In userdata atom > (started by Nero Digital) can't interact with the sceneDescription, or via > segmentDescriptor So it seems the chapter mark in .mp4 is not standardized. The question is: if I load a custom metadata file with chapters in it, using metadata muxer and output a .mp4 file, what do I get? 1. I get the .mp4 file like that would be produced with QuickTime 2. I get the .mp4 file like that would be produced with Nero Digital And more interesting would be: what kind of chapter marks are supported natively by Android/iOS, since which version? A serious content producer would want to measure it to tailer the file he produces. Thanks!

Audio decoding and MXFcontainer problem with DNxHD MXF
by Christoph Gerstbauer 10 Jun '14

10 Jun '14

Hello, I have a audio decoding/MXFcontainer problems with a MXF Op1a file which was encoded by Adobe Premiere (Videocodec DNxHD, AudioCodec pcm_s24le). When I open the file with ffprobe it shows me following warning messages: 1.) [mxf @ 0000000002a58080] Field dominance 0 support is not implemented 2.) [mxf @ 0000000002a58080] OPAtom misinterpreted as OP1a?KLV for edit unit 1 extending into next edit unit is not implemented When I transcode it (video and audio) I get an additional error at decoding the audio: 3.) [pcm_s24le @ 00000000003b8d20] Invalid PCM packet, data has size 4 but at least a size of 24 was expected Error while decoding stream #0:1: Invalid data found when processing input In the final target file, the audio error is hearable between 00:00:05.000 - END OF FILE. Sounds like clipping. When I decode the file with FFmbc, there is no problem with the audio (but an other warning: [dnxhd @ 00000000003893E0] frame size changed: 1920x540 -> 1920x1080) For error 1.) (Field order) I checked with mxfdump: there is no KLV field order information (like "[ k = FieldDominance 32.12, l = 1 (0001) ] 0 01") in the MXF Container itself. That would fit. -> "Field dominance 0", but I am not shure if ffmpeg reads out this information from the MXF, does it? Regarding errors 2.) and 3.): What is the cause for these warning/error? AVFoundation audio device
by neve_capricorn＠gmx.de 05 Jun '14

05 Jun '14

the latest git version that i compiled for osx works great with the avfoundation devices. ffmpeg -f avfoundation -video_device_index 0 -i "default" out.mpg captures fine videoframes into an mpg stream. the underlaying avfoundation core audio is not possible as i seen, so i tried: ffmpeg -f avfoundation -audio_device_index 0 -i "default" out.mpg a short look in the avfoundation source seems that it´s only for video right now. is there a way how i can capture a audio stream with ffmpeg under osx 10.9 together with avfoundation to one muxed mpg or similar file container? thx for help tom

Brute-force decoding
by Laurence Perkins (OE) 02 Jun '14

02 Jun '14

I've been asked to recover the contents of a disk full of video files where the header information was stored separately from the video data. Unfortunately the header files are not recoverable, although most of the video files are. Before I start trying to puzzle out how to have ffmpeg brute-force its way through the possible combinations of codecs and settings, I figured I'd ask if anybody here knows of extant tools for doing this. Or, failing that, just advice on how to go about it in general is appreciated. Wrapping my head around all the parameters at once is proving challenging... LMP

Reversed order of video audio after audio merging (0:0 audio, 0:1 video)

Hello, I have multiple MXF files where first track is video and followed tracks are audio which have to me merged to one audio output stream: e.g.: Inputfile has 0:0 video 0:1 audio 0:2 audio 0:3 audio 0:4 audio When I merge the multiple audio channel from an MXF file to one audio output stream I get following: 0:0 audio 0:1 video How can I force that ffmpeg outputs always a video file where the video stream is on first place (0:0)? "Error while decoding stream #0:X: Error number -12 occurred" when trying to merge multiple audiotracks from PremiereCC MOV to one audio track in AVI
by Christoph Gerstbauer 02 Jun '14

02 Jun '14

Hello, I am trying to merge multiple audio tracks from Premiere CC MOV files to one audio track in an AVI file (ffvhuff). Sourcefile is MOV, and has multiple audio streams (e.g 2x stereo, 2x mono, 4x mono, 8x mono, 4x stereo....) There happens always following errors when I try to merge the audio streams to one audio stream: Error while decoding stream #0:1: Error number -12 occurred Error while decoding stream #0:2: Error number -12 occurred Error while decoding stream #0:3: Error number -12 occurred... etc The error can be reproduced with every multiaudiotrack MOV. The problematic MOV files were generated by Adobe Premiere CC. Multiaudiotrack MOVs generated with FFMPEG -> no problems at decoding. An example file can be downloaded here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/26129407/ffmpeg_user_mailing_sample_AVC… My used syntax: ffmpeg -i I:\TEST\4mono_DVPAL.mov -vcodec ffvhuff -codec:a pcm_s24le -filter_complex "amerge=inputs=4" I:\TEST\4mono_DVPAL.avi Best Regards Christoph Command Line output: C:\Users\gersti>ffmpeg -i I:\TEST\4mono_DVPAL.mov -vcodec ffvhuff -codec:a pcm_s24le
