Hi, I would like, in one ffmpeg instance, create muliple outputs files, BUT not in parallel. Is it possible to insert or fake dependencies between the output files? Regards, -- Jérôme

Decode to BGR24 avi
by Timo Stjernberg 02 Apr '15

02 Apr '15

Hello. I am returning this issue back via the actual mailing list, since posting via nabble.com doesn't seem to work right. Refer to http://ffmpeg-users.933282.n4.nabble.com/Decode-to-BGR24-raw-AVI-td4653855.… the original thread. There seems to be a disagreement between FFmpeg and VirtualDub of what uncompressed bgr24 raw avi really is. I can tell this already by looking at file sizes that they produce from the same video but PSNR & other metrics tell me they're definitely not the same video. I have done extensive testing on different videos with ffmpeg and so I decided to set this test up for you guys to figure out what is going south on bgr24 raw avi's. All example video files are accessible at http://videotimo.fi/ffmpeg/ TEST PHASE 1: We start with a raw original avi that has been built from PNG frames with VirtualDub (sintel_raw_original.avi). We make a rawvideo -pix_fmt bgr24 copy of it with ffmpeg to find out that even when there should be no difference between input and output, the files are not the same in size. (sintel_ffmpeg_raw2raw.avi) Console output: ffmpeg -i G:\Testivideot\sintel_raw_original.avi -vcodec rawvideo -pix_fmt bgr24 sintel_ffmpeg_raw2raw.avi: ffmpeg version N-47062-g26c531c Copyright (c) 2000-2012 the FFmpeg developers built on Nov 25 2012 12:21:26 with gcc 4.7.2 (GCC) configuration: --enable-gpl --enable-version3 --disable-pthreads --enable-runt ime-cpudetect --enable-avisynth --enable-bzlib --enable-frei0r --enable-libass - -enable-libopencore-amrnb --enable-libopencore-amrwb --enable-libfreetype --enab le-libgsm --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libnut --enable-libopenjpeg --enable-libo pus --enable-librtmp --enable-libschroedinger --enable-libspeex --enable-libtheo ra --enable-libutvideo --enable-libvo-aacenc --enable-libvo-amrwbenc --enable-li bvorbis --enable-libvpx --enable-libx264 --enable-libxavs --enable-libxvid --ena ble-zlib libavutil 52. 9.100 / 52. 9.100 libavcodec 54. 77.100 / 54. 77.100 libavformat 54. 37.100 / 54. 37.100 libavdevice 54. 3.100 / 54. 3.100 libavfilter 3. 23.102 / 3. 23.102 libswscale 2. 1.102 / 2. 1.102 libswresample 0. 17.101 / 0. 17.101 libpostproc 52. 2.100 / 52. 2.100 Input #0, avi, from 'G:\Testivideot\sintel_raw_original.avi': Duration: 00:00:01.21, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 234514 kb/s Stream #0:0: Video: rawvideo, bgr24, 848x480, 24 tbr, 24 tbn, 24 tbc Output #0, avi, to 'd:\sintel_ffmpeg_raw2raw.avi': Metadata: ISFT : Lavf54.37.100 Stream #0:0: Video: rawvideo, bgr24, 848x480, q=2-31, 200 kb/s, 24 tbn, 24 t bc Stream mapping: Stream #0:0 -> #0:0 (rawvideo -> rawvideo) Press [q] to stop, [?] for help frame= 21 fps=0.0 q=0.0 size= 25048kB time=00:00:00.87 bitrate=234508.5kbits frame= 29 fps=0.0 q=0.0 Lsize= 34589kB time=00:00:01.20 bitrate=234497.3kbit s/s video:34582kB audio:0kB subtitle:0 global headers:0kB muxing overhead 0.018011% ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TEST PHASE 2: We encode the raw original to mpeg2 (sintel_ffmpeg_raw2mpeg2.avi). Still, something is done very differently on all bgr24 raw avi decodes because I still have to run all the raw avi decodes through VirtualDub after ffmpeg before feeding the test videos to the PSNR calculator. Additionally, Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 doesn't seem to understand the raw avi produced by ffmpeg at all. Anybody had any similar incidents? Anybody that can clarify any of this? What am I doing wrong?

Erroneous volume level shifts using ffmpeg to convert AC3 in M2TS to WAV
by John Pilgrim 03 Mar '15

03 Mar '15

I using ffmpeg to extract audio from non-commercial bluray m2ts video files, for subsequent loudness analysis in AudioLeak or Dolby Media Meter. The m2ts sometimes have AC3 audio and sometimes have linear PCM audio. I wish to output a WAV file. The command I am using is ffmpeg -i foo.m2ts foo.wav The volume levels of the WAV files are not accurate compared to the corresponding AC3 files. Here's what I mean: If I extract the ac3 audio instead, using ffmpeg -i foo.m2ts -acodec copy -f ac3 foo.ac3 and run both through Dolby Media Meter, the loudness and peak levels of the WAV are shifted up/or down compared to the corresponding AC3 file. And this is happening with AC3 files with a DIALNORM metadata value of -31, which per the Dolby specs, should result in NO volume level change, as -31 is the reference point. Does anyone have any insight into what's going on, or recommendations for a better invocation of ffmpeg? Thanks!

Using ffmpeg to "rescue" a damaged dvd
by vsethi＠iglou.com 03 Mar '15

03 Mar '15

I have an unfinalized, somewhat damaged dvd, NTSC video format. Dvdisaster has written what it can salvage into an ISO file. Although it doesn't know how long the image is (over 4 hours), VLC Media Player is able to play the ISO file. (It begins with the assumption that the file is one hour long but plays the whole thing anyway.) No other package can do anything with it. Is it possible to use ffmpeg to restore the missing header, navigation packets, etc., into a copy of this ISO file so that other software/devices can play it? I've tried: ffmpeg -i source.iso -target ntsc-video source.out ffmpeg quits quickly with a series of error messages: Format mp3 detected only with low score of 1, misdetection possible! Header missing Stream #0: not enough frames to estimate rate; consider increasing probesize decoding for stream 0 failed Could not find codec parameters for stream 0 <Audio: mp1, 0 channels, s16p>: unspecified frame size Consider increasing the value for the 'analyzeduration' and 'probesize' options I haven't been able to figure out how to increase analyzeduration and probesize nor what values to increase them to. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re-encode mpeg2 for same quality
by petesea＠frontier.com 03 Mar '15

03 Mar '15

How can I re-encode an mpeg2 video into another mpeg2 video and preserve as much of the original detail/quality as possible? For example, if I do this (full output below): $ ffmpeg -i video-ORIG.vob -codec:v mpeg2video -b:v 16384k -maxrate 30000k -bufsize 4096k -codec:a copy -copyts -f vob video-COPY.vob The "video-COPY.vob" file is about half the size of "video-ORIG.vob" and the total bitrate goes from 5010 kb/s down to 2766 kb/s. This leads me to think it must be degrading the quality of the video. What do I need to do to maintain the same size, shape, bits, pixels... ie the same (or as close to as possible) "quality"? There's 2 main reasons I'd like to do this: 1. When video-COPY.vob is transferred to my DVR, it plays ok, but has problems when fast forward/reverse is used. If I fast forward then stop, the video will skip ahead several minutes. This is very annoying and makes it so FFWD/REV are very unreliable. When video-ORIG.vob is transferred to my DVR it doesn't have any of these problems. 2. I assume the reduction in size/bitrate means a reduction in the video quality. I want to maintain as much of the original quality as possible. I suspect one question may be - why am I re-encoding "video-ORIG.vob" into a video of the same format if the original works fine. Right now, I'm re-encoding just as test, the final video will only be re-encoded in order to add hard subtitles via the overlay filter. I'm guessing if I can get the correct options without the overlay filter they should still apply when I use the overlay filter. I'm not married to ANY of the options I've used... in fact if I could (eventually) do something like this: $ ffmpeg -i video-ORIG.vob -filter_complex "[0:v][0:s]overlay" -c copy video-HARDSUBS.vob that would be perfect. But I know I can't copy the video stream and use an overlay filter, so I want to come up with the options that preserve as much of the video detail/quality as possible. I'm also hoping that by preserving the quality/detail this will correct the FFWD/REV problems. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- $ ffmpeg -i video-ORIG.vob -codec:v mpeg2video -b:v 16384k -maxrate 30000k -bufsize 4096k -codec:a copy -copyts -f vob video-COPY.vob ffmpeg version 2.5.3 Copyright (c) 2000-2015 the FFmpeg developers built on Feb 12 2015 12:31:33 with gcc 4.5.1 (GCC) 20100924 (Red Hat 4.5.1-4) configuration: --enable-gpl --enable-version3 --enable-nonfree --disable-static --enable-shared --disable-debug --enable-libass --enable-libfdk-aac --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libtheora --enable-libvorbis --enable-libvpx --enable-libx264 --enable-x11grab libavutil 54. 15.100 / 54. 15.100 libavcodec 56. 13.100 / 56. 13.100 libavformat 56. 15.102 / 56. 15.102 libavdevice 56. 3.100 / 56. 3.100 libavfilter 5. 2.103 / 5. 2.103 libswscale 3. 1.101 / 3. 1.101 libswresample 1. 1.100 / 1. 1.100 libpostproc 53. 3.100 / 53. 3.100 Input #0, mpeg, from 'video-ORIG.vob': Duration: 02:12:02.98, start: 0.533367, bitrate: 5010 kb/s Stream #0:0[0x1e0]: Video: mpeg2video (Main), yuv420p(tv), 720x480 [SAR 32:27 DAR 16:9], max. 9800 kb/s, 29.97 fps, 59.94 tbr, 90k tbn, 59.94 tbc Stream #0:1[0x80]: Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, 5.1(side), fltp, 448 kb/s Output #0, vob, to 'video-COPY.vob': Metadata: encoder : Lavf56.15.102 Stream #0:0: Video: mpeg2video, yuv420p, 720x480 [SAR 32:27 DAR 16:9], q=2-31, 16384 kb/s, 29.97 fps, 90k tbn, 29.97 tbc Metadata: encoder : Lavc56.13.100 mpeg2video Stream #0:1: Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, 5.1(side), 448 kb/s Stream mapping: Stream #0:0 -> #0:0 (mpeg2video (native) -> mpeg2video (native)) Stream #0:1 -> #0:1 (copy) Press [q] to stop, [?] for help frame=237452 fps= 93 q=2.0 Lsize= 2675912kB time=02:12:03.50 bitrate=2766.6kbits/s dup=47490 drop=0 video:2206637kB audio:433288kB subtitle:0kB other streams:0kB global headers:0kB muxing overhead: 1.363188% $ ffmpeg -hide_banner -i video-COPY.vob Input #0, mpeg, from 'video-COPY.vob': Duration: 02:12:02.98, start: 0.533367, bitrate: 2766 kb/s Stream #0:0[0x1e0]: Video: mpeg2video (Main), yuv420p(tv), 720x480 [SAR 32:27 DAR 16:9], max. 30000 kb/s, 29.97 fps, 29.97 tbr, 90k tbn, 59.94 tbc Stream #0:1[0x80]: Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, 5.1(side), fltp, 448 kb/s At least one output file must be specified $ ls -lgG video-ORIG.vob video-COPY.vob -rw-r--r--. 2 4961927168 Feb 23 10:49 video-ORIG.vob -rw-r--r--. 1 2740133888 Feb 24 12:58 video-COPY.vob

Past duration 0.9xxxxx too large
by Nicholas Robbins 28 Feb '15

28 Feb '15

I recently started getting this error in a batch of transcodes. The files are DVD rips of a TV show that are mixed "30"fps and "24"fps. (the credits are at 30fps.) They are in mkvs that think they are "30"fps but actually counting frames gives something like 24.03 fps. In the past this command has worked fine. Now I'm getting 19000 lines of "Past duration 0.999392 too large" (exact number varies, is 0.9xxx > 99% of the time) So, a) is this an indication that I am doing something wrong? b) if not how do I make this stop so my logs are readable? How to get only audio from "rawvideo" stream
by Deron 27 Feb '15

27 Feb '15

I'm trying to generate a number of HLS streams from a single source including using the new webvtt for cc. The following command: ffmpeg -i test.ts -vn -f hls -hls_segment_filename "a.%d.ts" -y "a.m3u8" Works as expected, but ffmpeg -f lavfi -i "movie=test.ts[out0+subcc]" -vn -sn -f hls -hls_segment_filename "a.%d.ts" -y "a.m3u8" Fails with: ffmpeg version N-70148-g418be7c Copyright (c) 2000-2015 the FFmpeg developers built with gcc 4.8 (Ubuntu 4.8.2-19ubuntu1) configuration: --enable-shared --enable-gpl --enable-nonfree --enable-libxvid --enable-libx264 --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libvorbis --enable-libfaac --enable-libopenjpeg libavutil 54. 19.100 / 54. 19.100 libavcodec 56. 26.100 / 56. 26.100 libavformat 56. 23.104 / 56. 23.104 libavdevice 56. 4.100 / 56. 4.100 libavfilter 5. 11.101 / 5. 11.101 libswscale 3. 1.101 / 3. 1.101 libswresample 1. 1.100 / 1. 1.100 libpostproc 53. 3.100 / 53. 3.100 [mpeg2video @ 0x1c777a0] Invalid frame dimensions 0x0. Last message repeated 35 times Input #0, lavfi, from 'movie=test.ts[out0+subcc]': Duration: N/A, start: 9602.931211, bitrate: N/A Stream #0:0: Video: rawvideo (I420 / 0x30323449), yuv420p, 1920x1080 [SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9], 29.97 fps, 29.97 tbr, 90k tbn, 90k tbc Stream #0:1: Subtitle: eia_608 Output #0, hls, to 'a.m3u8': Output file #0 does not contain any stream I get that I surpressed the video stream, and the audio is merged with it. How do I get it out without changing the input? I ultimately need to generate multiple streams including cc from a single input, so I can't remove cc from the input. Thanks, Deron

drawtext to a (transparent) bounding box
by Jannes Faber 27 Feb '15

27 Feb '15

Hi, Video editting newbie here. I'm trying to use addtext onto a box and then overlay that box on a video. That works fine, except when I try to make the bounding box transparent. The problem is that the text itself becomes transparent too, not just the bounding box. I asked this question here and included some screenshots and example code: http://video.stackexchange.com/questions/14924/ffmpeg-drawtext-in-a-transpa… The very helpful comment I got so far: "I think what's happening is that drawtext isn't writing the alpha channel, so overlay just sees a rectangle with uniform alpha. The opacity controls for drawtext just affect how it blends its text into the frames it draws on." - Peter Cordes It feels a bit like a bug in ffmpeg to me, but I'm sure there's a good explanation. And I'm wondering if there's another/better way to do it? Thank you. -- Jannes

webcam video stream to vlc or http
by ian c 27 Feb '15

27 Feb '15

Hi Experts, I tried to stream video from webcam to vlc client through network using this command. ffmpeg -f v4l2 -i /dev/video0 -c copy -f mpegts udp://192.168.250.1:9000 in windows VLC, i opened the netwrok stream using udp://192.168.250.1:9000. When it connected, it does not show any video. Any idea why there is no video? Do you think it is vlc issue? I used Windows VLC version 2.1.5 Rincewind and ffmpeg version 2.4 for Linux. Regards,Ian
