Explanation of how -r affects frame rate of filtergraph

Hello, I've seen some odd behavior with using -r that I cannot see documented. Twos input are a png images (just pure white in this example), another is a 30fps mp4. The output is set to 30fps using the "-r" option. ffmpeg -y -loop 1 -i background.png -i source.numbered.mp4 -loop 1 -i background.png -filter_complex_script filtergraph -r 30.0 -colorspace bt709 -color_trc bt709 -color_primaries bt709 -color_range tv r_before_output.mp4 This results in a 30fps video but frames are dropped from the video source, resulting in duplicates in the final output. A "fix" seems to be to specify the frame rate of the first image input, and not of the output at all. Like so: ffmpeg -y -loop 1 -r 30 -i background.png -i source.numbered.mp4 -loop 1 -i background.png -filter_complex_script filtergraph -colorspace bt709 -color_trc bt709 -color_primaries bt709 -color_range tv r_before_first_input.mp4 This also results in a 30fps output with all frames present but seems counter intuitive to put the frame rate on an image input. I wasn't able to find documentation on this behavior. Is someone able to explain how this is working internally? And whether or not this "fix" is actually reliable or just a lucky coincidence? audio is too short

Hi, I'd like to know if someone can reproduce this problem: Make a 6s video with audio: ffmpeg -f lavfi -i testsrc2=size=vga -f lavfi -i sine=1000 -t 6 -y video.mp4 The video plays correctly and has 6s of audio. Now mix the audio channels from two of these input videos: ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -i video.mp4 -lavfi "[0:a][1:a]amix=weights='1.0 0.1'" -y out.mp4 You can hear that the audio from the first input ends too early at 4s, and the audio from the second input has the correct length 6s. Tested with FFplay and VLC. Known workaround: add -c:v mpeg4 This is ticket 8489, but so far nobody did have a look at it. Hi, I have a problem. I installed ffmpeg on my mac to convert to webm and do a test. The test went well. The problem is that now on my mac when I try to use vlc or quicktime to watch a video, they no longer play audio. I have audio on my computer if I watch a YouTube video, but if I try to see it from my files on my computer, I don't have audio ....? any suggestions? Let me tell you what I did to convert the file: ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -c vp9 -b:v 0 -crf 41 newvideo.webm so perhaps you can tell me how to solve this? thanks in advance. juan

My code is mostly composed of "encode_video.c" example: https://ffmpeg.org/doxygen/trunk/encode_video_8c-example.html It generates a malformed video file which I can transform into well-formed one with ffmpeg tool: ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vcodec copy test.mp4 The tool prints the following warnings: [mp4 @ 00000208ce831240] Timestamps are unset in a packet for stream 0. This is deprecated and will stop working in the future. Fix your code to set the timestamps properly [mp4 @ 00000208ce831240] pts has no value I really want to get a well-formed file in one pass using only c++ code. -movflags +faststart has no effect

Hi, from option -movflags +faststart I expect, that I can start playing the video, even the encoding process has not finished yet. But this does not work,why? If I encode a video without -movflags +faststart and kill the process with Ctrl-C after a while the video surprisingly is playable. So there seems it doesn't matter if I use it or not. Also I'm wondering where to find this option in the ffmpeg documentation, I only find it in the wiki. concat protocol - 3 objectives

The concat protocol command at the end of this message works, but with limits. Since the concat protocol basically works, it seems logical to me to simply expand its capability. To that end, I now have 3 objectives. Objective 1: Expand it to include all 4 audio streams, not just the first 5.1 channel stream encountered (which happens to be the isolated score). Objective 2: Output it as an MKV, not as a TS. Objective 3: Include subtitles. Regarding Objective 1: I tried to apply '-filter_complex' but couldn't figure out how to form a working command line and had to gave up. Regarding Objective 2: Simply specifying 'n:\output.mkv' fails [matroska @ 0000016de19500c0] Can't write packet with unknown timestamp av_interleaved_write_frame(): Invalid argument frame= 2 fps=0.0 q=-1.0 Lsize= 10kB time=00:00:00.00 bitrate=83856.0kbits/s speed=0.0594x video:8kB audio:2kB subtitle:0kB other streams:0kB global headers:0kB muxing overhead: 6.697883% Conversion failed! Regarding Objective 3: Though a subtitle stream is not reported, the 5 concatenated sources do have subtitles. However, I think I have to get a matroska container working before attempting to include the subtitles, so this objective will have to wait. Note that from ffprobe, I can see that the video & audio stream numbers change from one VOB to another. But ffmpeg apparently can track them automatically -- I write that with confidence because, when I play 'output.ts', the single audio stream that gets into 'output.ts' (i.e., the isolated score) is constant and doesn't suddenly become dialog in the middle. Can anyone suggest how I can meet any of my objectives? What is expected ffmpeg behavior when output device is slow?

Hi everyone, I think I've isolated the cause of the trouble I'm having, but thought to bounce it off the list to keep me honest and maybe provide some searchable insight for a future user. First off, it it doesn't appear to be a problem with ffmpeg. The problem appears related to the output device. What is the output device? rpi 3b+ w/ a decent SD Card which is not a great output device. What I'm trying to do: Copy an hevc stream set up via RTSP to a file. a/vcodec copy. One manner of invocation is: ffmpeg -nostdin -loglevel verbose -hide_banner -y -rtsp_transport tcp -i rtsp://192.168.5.168/hdmi -vcodec copy -acodec copy -f mp4 /tmp/test4.mp4 When the output device is fully utilized causing processes to spend time in uninterruptible sleep, it appears ffmpeg frequently arrives at, "No more output streams to write to, finishing". When the ouput device is full, similar output, but with more specific information about the device full. No more output streams to write to, finishing. I'm still a bit puzzled that ffmpeg will occasionally exit with the same message when there is no apparent output device contention. But watching iotop, for example, it is pretty apparent that SD Card I/O is great until it is not great. Easy to imagine given the nature of the type of memory and its controller. My only question at this point is if there are any params that might make ffmpeg more tolerant to not being able to write out to a device. I couldn't find much information on the thread_queue_size option and it appears ffmpeg hardly uses any memory during the a/vcodec copy. Thoughts?

h264 videos are darker

Hello, I'm recording streaming videos from a camera, using ffmpeg. The video stream is 8bit 658x492 grey and the frame rate is 30-60 fps. Individual frames are fed to a pipe on which ffmpeg is listening. The pipeline works very reliably. My command looks like this: ffmpeg.exe -y -hide_banner -vcodec rawvideo -f rawvideo -r 30 -s 658x492 -pix_fmt gray -i \\.\pipe\DEV_000F315BEBB8<file://./pipe/DEV_000F315BEBB8> -r 30 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -crf 5 x:\\Videos\output.avi The images are also displayed on the screen. When comparing the screen images with the resulting movie, dark areas are darker in the resulting video, especially at a higher frame rate. As these are scientific videos, we are striving to get as good quality/compression ratio of the output as possible. Is there any other flags to consider in the above command in order to get as close to 'real' result as possible? Any other compression algorithm working better for this?
