dshow questions
by Michael Koch 09 Aug '20

09 Aug '20

Hi, I have two questions about the dshow input device. Question 1: On the wiki page https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/DirectShow can be found this example: ffmpeg -f dshow -video_size 1280x720 -framerate 15 -vcodec mjpeg -i video="Integrated Camera" out.avi Is -vcodec in this case an undocumented option of the dshow input device? I ask because it's written before -i. Or is it an option for the output, and could (or should?) be written before the output file? Question 2: I have this HDMI to USB converter (which is working very good, by the way): https://www.ebay.de/itm/1080P-HDMI-Videoaufnahme-Video-Capture-Card-Grabber… When I list the options with this command line ffmpeg -list_options 1 -f dshow -i video="USB Video" this is the output: C:\Users\mKoch\Desktop>c:\ffmpeg\ffmpeg -list_options 1 -f dshow -i video="USB V ideo" ffmpeg version Giving a title to an audio stream
by PPRJ01 08 Aug '20

08 Aug '20

Hello All, I don't understand how ffmpeg/ffprobe manage some metadata of audio streams. Let's take a simple example : ffmpeg -i INPUT.mp4 -c copy -metadata:s:a:0 "title=5.1" OUTPUT.mp4 The result is : 1- ffprobe is not able to retrieve the audio title of the resulting file, whatever are the options used (I don't know if there are undocumented options) 2- VLC does retrieve the audio title correctly 3- exiftool does retrieve the audio title too I tried to do something similar with a subtitle stream and I had the same result. I am not a developper. Therefore I cannot read the source code. Maybe ffmpeg stores this metadata in a place where ffprobe is not able to retrieve it. Does somebody know if this is a normal behavior ? Rgds Pascal

DASH and Variable framerate
by Alfred E. Heggestad 08 Aug '20

08 Aug '20

Hi, I am wondering if DASH muxer supports variable framerate. What I have seen is that DASH and HLS behaves differently regarding variable framerate input. muxer: format: audio delay: DASH: m4s yes DASH w HLS playlist: m4s yes HLS muxer: mpegts no in m4s the audio and video track is stored in separate .m4s files. after some time they become out of sync. in mpegts the audio/video track is stored in the same .ts file. no issues with a/v sync here The ffmpeg command is used with RTMP as input: $ ffmpeg -listen 1 -i rtmp://127.0.0.1:1935/foo \ -c:v copy \ -c:a copy \ \ -f dash -remove_at_exit false playlist.mpd any feedback is appreciated. /alfred

options of vidstabdetect video filter
by PPRJ01 08 Aug '20

08 Aug '20

Hello All, Is there a maximum value for the "stepsize" option of vidstabdetect ? I don't see any in the documentation. I first tried this on Windows : ffmpeg -i "INPUT.mp4" -an -vf vidstabdetect=shakiness=10:accuracy=15:stepsize=6:result="TRF06.txt" "dummy.mp4" and then this : ffmpeg -i "INPUT.mp4" -an -vf vidstabdetect=shakiness=10:accuracy=15:stepsize=32:result="TRF32.txt" "dummy.mp4" In both cases ffmpeg says that the parsed value is 6 and the two output TRF*.txt files are identical. Thank you for helping. Pascal

directly view transcoding in video player
by Timothy W. Grove 07 Aug '20

07 Aug '20

I develop an application which displays a video, amongst other things. A user may open just about any video format to view in the video display. "Saving" a video will invoke ffmpeg to resize and transcode the video to h264 (mp4) and display this video. Is it possible to open the initial video file and stream it to the display in its final format using ffmpeg so a user could see the video in its final form without the intermediate "saving" step? Thanks for any suggestions. Best regards, Tim

Error extracting srt
by Alex Zachopoulos 07 Aug '20

07 Aug '20

Hi all, I want to extract the SRT stream from mp4 files. On my MacPro with High Sierra running ffmpeg 3.3 all is fine. On my MacBook Pro with Catalina running ffmpeg 4.3 I keep getting an error. This is the command I use to extract Stream #0:2 (subtitle) from file 1.mp4, on both computers: ffmpeg -i 1.mp4 -vn -an -codec:s:0.2 srt 1.srt On the MacBook Pro with Catalina and ffmpeg 4.3 is complains, twice: First, somewhere down the middle of the dump it says: *[mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2 @ 0x7fd3b4009800] stream 0, timescale not set* Then at the end of the dump it says: *[srt @ 0x7fd3b300ce00] Invalid stream specifier: s:0.2.* * Last message repeated 1 times* Like I said, the same command works without a hitch on the MacPro. Anyone can help with any pointers, it'll be much appreciated. Alex

VFR jpg files to live streaming video
by xiaofeng 07 Aug '20

07 Aug '20

Hi, I have JPG files which are received in real time, and need to convert to video and streaming out. The problem is that the input rate is variable, from 0.5~2, very similar to this http://www.ffmpeg-archive.org/VFR-jpg-files-to-MJPEG-video-td4663659.html and https://video.stackexchange.com/questions/25811/ffmpeg-make-video-with-non-…, the very difference is that the files are received in real time. Is there any proper way to do this? Imaging some way like combining concat(from pipe) and ts_from_file? RTSP+UDP stream fails after upgrade from version 3.4.8
by Trenton Chang 06 Aug '20

06 Aug '20

Hi all, I was hoping to get some help on my streaming setup. I am currently working on some video-related experiments involving streaming H.264-encoded video using UDP. My setup: OS: Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS (reproduced on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS as well) Ffmpeg version: N-98617-g533d603 (reproduced with 4.3 as well) Configuration settings: --prefix=/home/trenton-windows/ffmpeg_build --pkg-config-flags=--static --extra-cflags=-I/home/trenton-windows/ffmpeg_build/include --extra-ldflags=-L/home/trenton-windows/ffmpeg_build/lib --extra-libs='-lpthread -lm' --bindir=/home/trenton-windows/bin --enable-gpl --enable-gnutls --enable-libaom --enable-libass --enable-libfdk-aac --enable-libfreetype --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libopus --enable-libvorbis --enable-libvpx --enable-libx264 --enable-libx265 --enable-nonfree --enable-debug=3 --disable-optimizations --disable-stripping libavutil 56. 57.100 / 56. 57.100 libavcodec 58. 99.100 / 58. 99.100 libavformat 58. 49.100 / 58. 49.100 libavdevice 58. 11.101 / 58. 11.101 libavfilter 7. 87.100 / 7. 87.100 libswscale 5. 8.100 / 5. 8.100 libswresample 3. 8.100 / 3. 8.100 libpostproc 55. 8.100 / 55. 8.100 Problem Description: On the same machine, I run the following two commands: Client side: ffmpeg -y -rtsp_flags listen -timeout 10 -i rtsp://localhost:12345/live.sdp -c copy test.mp4 Server side: ffmpeg -re -i TVs_Best_Kisses_Top_50_$52_to_41$_kiss_h_nm_np2_le_goo_1.avi -vcodec libx264 -strict 2 -f rtsp -rtsp_transport udp rtsp://localhost:12345/live.sdp This works without a hitch on ffmpeg 3.4.8-0ubuntu0.2 (installed via apt-get), and I can open test.mp4 in a media player to view a streamed copy of the input video file. However, I have since upgraded to the most recent version because I need to use the -stream_loop functionality, which was buggy in older versions of ffmpeg. When I run the same commands as above in the updated version, however, the client side hangs indefinitely. However, it works when I switch protocol to TCP (using '-rtsp_transport tcp'). This happens regardless of the input file that I use. When I Ctrl-C the client, I see a file called test.mp4, but it's unplayable, which I can tell because ffprobe outputs the following: [mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2 @ 0x562e3d718e80] moov atom not found test.mp4: Invalid data found when processing input Logs and descriptions The following files are all hosted at https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1oQnh-kAL4x6Zm-kaRDP_9aZgLH9YG2ub?us…. ffmpeg-20200803-170914.log: Using ffmpeg version N-98617-g533d603, client-side command run with addition arguments -report -loglevel 99 -v 9 . The problem I'm describing happens regardless of which video file I try to stream. What I've tried (all of these have failed): * Messed with the client buffer size, by appending buffer_size and fifo_size arguments to the client-side input URL like so: 'rtsp://localhost:12345/live.sdp?buffer_size=10000000?fifo_size=100000' * In response to warnings about PTS/DTS issues on the client-side, I added the options -fflags +genpts+igndts to the client-side command. I also tried just -fflags +genpts. * Tried adding -vsync 0 to the server side command as an output option. * Removed -vcodec libx264 -strict 2 on the server side. * Removed the -re real-time streaming option on the server side. * Changed port no. from 12345. * Tried streaming raw UDP w/o RTSP (still hangs, same issue). * Client-side command: ffmpeg -y -i udp://localhost:12345/ -c copy test.mp4 * Server-side command: ffmpeg -y -re -i TVs_Best_Kisses_Top_50_$52_to_41$_kiss_h_nm_np2_le_goo_1.avi -vcodec libx264 -strict 2 -f mpegts udp://localhost:12345/ * Tried using RTP protocol, results in error "[rtp @ 0x561525b9e680] Unable to receive RTP payload type 96 without an SDP file describing it" * Client-side command: ffmpeg -i rtp://localhost:12345 -c copy test.mp4 * Server-side command: ffmpeg -y -re -i TVs_Best_Kisses_Top_50_$52_to_41$_kiss_h_nm_np2_le_goo_1.avi -vcodec libx264 -strict 2 -f rtp rtp://localhost:12345/ Networking/systems is certainly not my area of expertise, so I'd appreciate any help here. Please let me know if there's other logs or information that you'd find helpful. Thank you in advance. Best, Trenton Chang M.S. Candidate in Computer Science

Why does specifying audio input before webcam video cause them to go out of sync?
by Justyn 06 Aug '20

06 Aug '20

Hi all I am using FFmpeg to stream from a webcam and a pulseaudio source to an RTMP server. I know that argument order has an effect in FFmpeg. But I have found that if I specify the audio input stream before the video input stream then the audio is delayed, about half a second behind the video. Since these are just two input streams combined together for the output, why does the order have an effect? I have stripped down and tested the below commands in order to simplify this post, in fact I am using hardware acceleration, AAC and various other codec options, the effect of the input ordering is always the same. ## FFmpeg command specifying video input first (no delay): ffmpeg -f v4l2 -input_format mjpeg -framerate 30 -video_size 1280x720 -i /dev/video1 -f pulse -i default -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -f flv rtmp:// a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/${STREAM_KEY} ## FFmpeg command specifying audio input first (audio 0.5 seconds behind video): ffmpeg -f pulse -i default -f v4l2 -input_format mjpeg -framerate 30 -video_size 1280x720 -i /dev/video1 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -f flv rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/${STREAM_KEY} The stdout messages from FFmpeg seem to be the same, except the stream order. ## Output when video input is first (no delay): Input #0, video4linux2,v4l2, from '/dev/video1': Duration: N/A, start: 331644.817465, bitrate: N/A Stream #0:0: Video: mjpeg (Baseline), yuvj422p(pc, bt470bg/unknown/unknown), 1280x720, 30 fps, 30 tbr, 1000k tbn, 1000k tbc Guessed Channel Layout for Input Stream #1.0 : stereo Input #1, pulse, from 'default': Duration: N/A, start: 1596371796.728130, bitrate: 1536 kb/s Stream #1:0: Audio: pcm_s16le, 48000 Hz, stereo, s16, 1536 kb/s Stream mapping: Stream #0:0 -> #0:0 (mjpeg (native) -> h264 (libx264)) Stream #1:0 -> #0:1 (pcm_s16le (native) -> mp3 (libmp3lame)) ## Output when audio input is first (audio 0.5 seconds behind video): Guessed Channel Layout for Input Stream #0.0 : stereo Input #0, pulse, from 'default': Duration: N/A, start: 1596371788.496242, bitrate: 1536 kb/s Stream #0:0: Audio: pcm_s16le, 48000 Hz, stereo, s16, 1536 kb/s Input #1, video4linux2,v4l2, from '/dev/video1': Duration: N/A, start: 331637.326454, bitrate: N/A Stream #1:0: Video: mjpeg (Baseline), yuvj422p(pc, bt470bg/unknown/unknown), 1280x720, 30 fps, 30 tbr, 1000k tbn, 1000k tbc Stream mapping: Stream #1:0 -> #0:0 (mjpeg (native) -> h264 (libx264)) Stream #0:0 -> #0:1 (pcm_s16le (native) -> mp3 (libmp3lame)) As you can see, the stream mapping is correct in each case. FFmpeg is version n4.3.1 compiled from git, on Ubuntu 20.04. What's going on? Any insights appreciated.
