Towards better trims & concatenations

Below is what I plan to submit to trac. I welcome comments and corrections. What I wrote pretty much goes to the heart of FFmpeg, so I expect push-back. The more people who confirm what I have written, the better. The files are over 500 MB. If you want them, ask. But I recommend you modify the script below to process your own 'mother'. My 'mother' was h:\BDMV\STREAM\00305.m2ts. Towards better trims & concatenations. -- Mark. set MOTHER=h:\BDMV\STREAM\00305.m2ts set SS=-ss 20.062 set TO=-to 34.076 set FILT1=setts=time_base=1/90000 set FILT2=setts=dts=DTS-STARTDTS:pts=PTS-STARTDTS set FILT3=setts=time_base=1/90000:dts=DTS-STARTDTS:pts=PTS-STARTDTS set VCOPY=-c:v copy set VCODE=-vf separatefields,setdar=16/9 -c:v libx265 -x265-params crf=18 set ACOPY=-c:a copy -sn -dn : : The Windows settings above will make sense further down. : : When this command file is run, the mother: 00305.m2ts, is used to : create the mother's clone: 00.mp4, plus 12 sons: 01.mp4..12.mp4. : The clone and sons are created at c:\. : : THE FILES HOW MADE THE SIZES : 00305.m2ts (mother) 679600 packets 15091 MB : 00.mp4 (clone) copy (reference) 4136 packets 136 MB : 01.mp4 (son) '-ss -i' & FILT1 1711 packets 56 MB : 02.mp4 (son) '-ss -i' & FILT2 1711 packets 56 MB : 03.mp4 (son) '-ss -i' & FILT3 1711 packets 56 MB : 04.mp4 (son) '-i -ss' & FILT1 1629 packets 52 MB : 05.mp4 (son) '-i -ss' & FILT2 1629 packets 52 MB : 06.mp4 (son) '-i -ss' & FILT3 1629 packets 52 MB : : The clone, 00.mp4, is made to enable packet tracing via packet CRCs. : : CORRELATING THE FIRST, NON-BLACK FRAMES: : MOTHER'S FRAME CLONE'S FRAME NOW KNOWN TO BE TRUE : 00305.m2ts, N=36 == 00.mp4, N=36 by looking & counting frames. : : CORRELATING THE FIRST, NON-BLACK FRAMES: : CLONE'S FRAME SON'S FRAME NOW KNOWN TO BE TRUE : 00.mp4, N=508 == 01.mp4, N=27 by looking & counting frames. : 00.mp4, N=508 == 02.mp4, N=27 by looking & counting frames. : 00.mp4, N=508 == 03.mp4, N=27 by looking & counting frames. : 00.mp4, N=508 == 04.mp4, N=2 by looking & counting frames. : 00.mp4, N=508 == 05.mp4, N=2 by looking & counting frames. : 00.mp4, N=508 == 06.mp4, N=2 by looking & counting frames. : : COMPUTING START FRAMES: : CLONE'S FRAME SON'S FRAME RATIONALE : 00.mp4, N=481 == 01.mp4, N=0 481 = 508 - 27. : 00.mp4, N=481 == 02.mp4, N=0 481 = 508 - 27. : 00.mp4, N=481 == 03.mp4, N=0 481 = 508 - 27. : 00.mp4, N=504 == 04.mp4, N=0 504 = 508 - 2. : 00.mp4, N=504 == 05.mp4, N=0 504 = 508 - 2. : 00.mp4, N=504 == 06.mp4, N=0 504 = 508 - 2. : : The ffmpeg commands that made the clone and sons are in sections : that follow. : : OTHER FACTS: : There are 90000 ticks/sec FROM time_base. : There are 1.001/24 secs/frame == 0.041708[3..] secs/frame. : There are 90090/24 ticks/frame == 3753.75 ticks/frame. : : EVERYTHING ELSE IS DERIVED VIA FFMPEG TOOLS. : That's tricky because at this point, FFmpeg tools are untrusted. : : TRIMMING ACCURACY. : Timming accuracy is crucial for follow-on concatenations. : Using MPV, a 0:20.062 trim time is found. The starting PTS is : therefore approximately 1805580 ticks. But what is it, exactly? : That depends on how MPV handles numbers. : If MPV truncates, the actual trim time and PTS are in the range : 20.062[0..]..20.062[9..] 1805580.[0..]..1805669.[9..]. : If MPV rounds, the actual trim time and PTS are in the range : 20.0615[0..]..20.0624[9..] 1805535.[0..]..1805624.[9..]. : The only clone PTS in a range above is 1805553 -- so MPV rounds. : The trim point is therefore 1805553 ticks, exactly. : : SUGGESTIONS: : To the best of my knowledge, there's a small private data area in : every packet. Use it to record the source's packet number into the : target's packet. That would make packet tracing a lot surer. : Change '-showinfo' to report real PTSs, not ticks from a starting : PTS that often doesn't actually exist. Bogus 'PTS's are confusing. : Add frame numbers to '-framecrc'. : Change CRCs to cover only payloads, not whole packets. : Find a way to differentiate silent audio packets, one from another. : (Note that the first suggestion would accomplish it.) : Change the default audio packet time_base to be the video packet : time_base. Better yet, always use the same time_base. That's usual. : If the trim frame is preceded by audio, then automatically include : the preceding audio packet; the preceding one, only, not more. : BEGIN ffmpeg -to 35.118 -i %MOTHER% -map 0 -c copy -sn -dn 00.mp4 : Creating the mother's clone. The '-framecrc' below is the clone. : : ======================== PACKETS 0..2352 ========================= : -3754, 0, 3753, 640654, 0x07c81f9c N=0 : 0, 7507, 3753, 640652, 0xfd25cfb3 N=2 : 4 audio packets : 3753, 3753, 3753, 640652, 0xe3dec43b N=1 : skip 2346 packets (477 video, 1869 audio) : : ======================= PACKETS 2353..2470 ======================= : 1798046, 1805553, 3753, 640654, 0xb9811068 N=481 - Having a hard time getting good results with mpeg2video

Hi, I'm trying to make a DVD with a still image (1:1 aspect ratio) and audio, the only issue is that the video is a bit blocky even after setting the highest bitrate available. The command used: `ffmpeg -i image.jpg -i audiofile.wav -f dvd -muxrate 10080k -packetsize 2048 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 24000/1001 -codec:v mpeg2video -g 18 -b:v 9800k -maxrate:v 9800k -minrate:v 9800k -bufsize:v 1835008 -vf "scale=720:576:flags=lanczos:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=720:576:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2" -codec:a pcm_dvd output.mpg` FFmpeg version (latest from Arch repos): `ffmpeg version n6.1.1 Copyright (c) 2000-2023 the FFmpeg developers built with gcc 13.2.1 (GCC) 20230801 configuration: --prefix=/usr --disable-debug --disable-static --disable-stripping --enable-amf --enable-avisynth --enable-cuda-llvm --enable-lto --enable-fontconfig --enable-frei0r --enable-gmp --enable-gnutls --enable-gpl --enable-ladspa --enable-libaom --enable-libass --enable-libbluray --enable-libbs2b --enable-libdav1d --enable-libdrm --enable-libfreetype --enable-libfribidi --enable-libgsm --enable-libharfbuzz --enable-libiec61883 --enable-libjack --enable-libjxl --enable-libmodplug --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libopencore_amrnb --enable-libopencore_amrwb --enable-libopenjpeg --enable-libopenmpt --enable-libopus --enable-libplacebo --enable-libpulse --enable-librav1e --enable-librsvg --enable-librubberband --enable-libsnappy --enable-libsoxr --enable-libspeex --enable-libsrt --enable-libssh --enable-libsvtav1 --enable-libtheora --enable-libv4l2 --enable-libvidstab --enable-libvmaf --enable-libvorbis --enable-libvpl --enable-libvpx --enable-libwebp --enable-libx264 --enable-libx265 --enable-libxcb --enable-libxml2 --enable-libxvid --enable-libzimg --enable-nvdec --enable-nvenc --enable-opencl --enable-opengl --enable-shared --enable-version3 --enable-vulkan libavutil 58. 29.100 / 58. 29.100 libavcodec 60. 31.102 / 60. 31.102 libavformat 60. 16.100 / 60. 16.100 libavdevice 60. 3.100 / 60. 3.100 libavfilter 9. 12.100 / 9. 12.100 libswscale 7. 5.100 / 7. 5.100 libswresample 4. 12.100 / 4. 12.100 libpostproc 57. 3.100 / 57. 3.100` I also played around with some hidden options but they didn't seem to make much difference: `-trellis 1 -dia_size 2 -pre_dia_size 2 -precmp rd -cmp rd -subcmp rd -mbd rd -last_pred 3 -vqmin 0 -vqmax 0 -qmin 1 -qmax 1 -dc 11 -vstrict 0 -mpv_flags '+mv0+cbp_rd+qp_rd' -lmin 1`

Issue encrypting udp stream using crypto protocol
by Julien Ayrault 08 Jan '24

08 Jan '24

Hi there, I'm trying to encrpyt a mutilicast UDP stream with crypto protocol (AES), here is the command line I use: ffmpeg -f decklink -channels 2 -format_code Hi50 -draw_bars false -video_input sdi -audio_input embedded -i "DeckLink Quad (4)" -filter_complex "[0:v]setfield=mode=tff,setpts=PTS-STARTPTS,drawtext=x=(main_w-text_w)/2:y=(main_h-text_h)/8:fontfile=C\\:/Windows/fonts/consola.ttf:text='TEST-05':box=1:boxcolor=000000CC:boxborderw=20:fontcolor=yellow:fontsize=48[vout];[0:a]asetpts=PTS-STARTPTS[aout]" -c:v libx264 -flags:v +ildct+ilme -g 25 -profile:v high -level:v 41 -tune:v zerolatency -preset:v veryfast -x264-params "nal_hrd=cbr:interlaced=1:weightp=0" -pix_fmt yuv420p -b:v 10000k -minrate:v 6000k -maxrate:v 10000k -bufsize:v 1000k -c:a libfdk_aac -b:a 256k -ar 48000 -metadata service_provider="service provider" -metadata service_name="service name" -map "[vout]" -map "[aout]" -f mpegts -encryption_key 000102030405060708090A0B0C0D0E0F -encryption_iv 000102030405060708090A0B0C0D0E0F "crypto+udp://239.0.0.5:5000?ttl=1&pkt_size=1316&buffer_size=4096000&localaddr=10.40.2.183" -loglevel verbose The command line above works flawlessly without the crypto protocol. I've got an error saying "Crypto: seek not supported for write", I don't know why cause I'm even not trying to seek ... I did a lot of searches on Google, StackOverflow and ffmpeg trac to find a solution but without success till now. I also tried with different versions of ffmpeg, still same error. Is anybody already tried to do this ? Is this a bug ? Should I create a ticket on trac ? Here is the full console output (verbose): ffmpeg version n6.1.1-4-gfe3b2419a7-g0f824d792d+85 Copyright (c) 2000-2023 the FFmpeg developers built with gcc 13.2.0 (Rev3, Built by MSYS2 project) configuration: --pkg-config=pkgconf --cc='ccache gcc' --cxx='ccache g++' --ld='ccache g++' --extra-cxxflags=-fpermissive --extra-cflags=-Wno-int-conversion --disable-autodetect --enable-amf --enable-bzlib --enable-cuda --enable-cuvid --enable-d3d11va --enable-dxva2 --enable-iconv --enable-lzma --enable-nvenc --enable-zlib --enable-sdl2 --enable-ffnvcodec --enable-nvdec --enable-cuda-llvm --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libopus --enable-libvorbis --enable-libvpx --enable-libx264 --enable-libdav1d --enable-libaom --disable-debug --enable-libfdk-aac --enable-fontconfig --enable-libass --enable-libfreetype --enable-libharfbuzz --enable-libfontconfig --enable-libmfx --enable-libmysofa --enable-libopenjpeg --enable-libsnappy --enable-libsoxr --enable-libspeex --enable-libtheora --enable-libtwolame --enable-libwebp --enable-libxml2 --enable-libzimg --enable-libshine --enable-gpl --enable-avisynth --enable-libopenmpt --enable-version3 --enable-librav1e --enable-libsrt --enable-libgsm --enable-libvmaf --enable-libsvtav1 --enable-chromaprint --enable-decklink --enable-frei0r --enable-libaribb24 --enable-libcaca --enable-libflite --enable-libfribidi --enable-libilbc --enable-libsvthevc --enable-libsvtvp9 --enable-libkvazaar --enable-librist --enable-librtmp --enable-librubberband --enable-libtesseract --enable-libzmq --enable-openal --enable-libcodec2 --enable-libglslang --enable-vulkan --enable-opengl --enable-libopenh264 --enable-openssl --extra-cflags=-DLIBTWOLAME_STATIC --extra-libs=-lstdc++ --extra-cflags=-DCACA_STATIC --extra-cflags=-DCHROMAPRINT_NODLL --extra-libs=-lstdc++ --extra-cflags=-DZMQ_STATIC --extra-libs=-lpsapi --extra-cflags=-DLIBXML_STATIC --extra-libs=-liconv --disable-w32threads --extra-cflags=-DKVZ_STATIC_LIB --enable-nonfree --extra-cflags=-DAL_LIBTYPE_STATIC --extra-cflags='-IC:/m-ab-s/local64/include' --extra-cflags='-IC:/m-ab-s/local64/include/AL' libavutil 58. 29.100 / 58. 29.100 libavcodec 60. 31.102 / 60. 31.102 libavformat 60. 16.100 / 60. 16.100 libavdevice 60. 3.100 / 60. 3.100 libavfilter 9. 12.100 / 9. 12.100 libswscale 7. 5.100 / 7. 5.100 libswresample 4. 12.100 / 4. 12.100 libpostproc 57. 3.100 / 57. 3.100 [decklink @ 0000013cc9656740] Found Decklink mode 1920 x 1080 with rate 25.00(i) [decklink @ 0000013cc9656740] Using 2 input audio channels [decklink @ 0000013cc9656740] Frame received (#1) - No input signal detected - Frames dropped 1 [aist#0:0/pcm_s16le @ 0000013cc965c100] Guessed Channel Layout: stereo Input #0, decklink, from 'DeckLink Quad (4)': Duration: N/A, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 830976 kb/s Stream #0:0: Audio: pcm_s16le, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, s16, 1536 kb/s Stream #0:1: Video: rawvideo, 1 reference frame (UYVY / 0x59565955), uyvy422(top first), 1920x1080, 829440 kb/s, 25 tbr, 1000k tbn [out#0/mpegts @ 0000013cc965adc0] Adding streams from explicit maps... Carrying arbitrary data track from TS to mp4
by Sid Sethupathi 05 Jan '24

05 Jan '24

Hello, I have an MPEG-TS video that has some arbitrary data included in a data stream. The data doesn't fit any typical media spec, it is some camera calibration data. Here is a sample: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1k-p3oLEJ_Ot5My4TEo9B7hWv3hwHijLJ/view?usp=… You can extract the data using the following command: "ffmpeg -i sample.ts -map d:0 -f data ts.bin" or you can do a cursory inspection with hexdump: "ffmpeg -hide_banner -loglevel error -i sample.ts -map d:0 -c copy -f data - | hexdump | less" I'd like to convert this file to an mp4 and retain the arbitrary data track. The following command seems to work: "ffmpeg -i sample.ts -map 0 sample.mp4" but upon closer inspection, the data track includes some data but appears to have been truncated, I think to just the first frame. The extracted binary data from the TS sample is 206K, but from the MP4 sample it is 170B. If you compare the extracted binary in hexdump, the MP4 sample stops after the first repeated xFF separator which is what is leading me to believe it is stopping after the first frame. I'm unsure whether this is a limitation with the MP4 container, or if I'm missing a flag somewhere in the ffmpeg invocation, so any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks, Sid

Video in video not from start
by Cecil Westerhof 05 Jan '24

05 Jan '24

I want to play a video in a video from a certain point. I understood I could do something like: ffmpeg \ -i input1.mp4 \ -i input2.mp4 \ -filter_complex " [0:v][1:v] overlay=25:25: enable='between(t,8,20)' " \ -pix_fmt yuv420p \ -c:a copy \ output.mp4 But this starts input2.mp4 from the start of input2.mp4 on the 8 second, for twelve seconds. Is it possible to let input2.mp4 not start from second 0, but from second 17? -- Cecil Westerhof Senior Software Engineer LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/cecilwesterhof

'-showinfo'-'-framecrc' mind meld
by Mark Filipak 04 Jan '24

04 Jan '24

PS: Another way that will crack this nut is to simply add packet CRCs to '-showinfo'. Switching back and forth between '-framecrc' and an enhanced '-showinfo' would be a little more tedious to use -- it's what I'm doing now -- but at least it would make correlations possible, eh? -- Mark. Hi All, Ya know '-showinfo'? Ya know '-framecrc'? I need a mind meld of the two that works on a packet-by-packet basis. But that's impossible because of incompatible output methods. So, here's what I need and why. What: I need an ffmpeg command that • sees packets • reports packet DTS • reports packet PTS • reports whether frame (with 'N') or audio • reports packet CRCs Why: I have definitely found packets that wind up out of order following a trim, reshuffled, wrong DTSs & PTSs -- absolutely a bug, no doubt -- but I can't correlate that to the source because '-showinfo' uses ticks -- calls them "PTS" -- with an unknown starting point and does not show CRCs to correlate with '-framecrc' data. Why: I have definitely found trim-cuts that are 24 frames late -- absolutely a bug, no doubt -- but again, I can't correlate that with source frame numbers. Is there such a tool? Can such a tool be built? Aside: The table of DTSs, PTSs, packet POS, CRCs, etc., and the access methods must be gigantic. There appear to be access problems, and I'm trying to clarify the problems for bug submittal. We've all experienced trim-concat problems with certain video segments and I'm trying to illuminate them to help the developers. Cheers -- Mark. _______________________________________________ ffmpeg-user mailing list ffmpeg-user(a)ffmpeg.org https://ffmpeg.org/mailman/listinfo/ffmpeg-user To unsubscribe, visit link above, or email ffmpeg-user-request(a)ffmpeg.org with subject "unsubscribe".

No audio when playing on Rockchip chipset
by Mahmut Akcay 03 Jan '24

03 Jan '24

I'm using FFMPEG to generate HLS output with x264 and libfdk_aac. It plays properly on apple and android platforms with platforms' native player. However, on some android devices with Rockchip chipset it plays without audio. Does anybody know what might be the problem?

Triggering VBR in audio codecs who doesn't have native VBR support.
by Aditya Dandavate 03 Jan '24

03 Jan '24

Is it possible to trigger VBR mode by setting different values for -maxrate, -minrate and -b:v even for those audio codecs who doesn't have support for VBR ? e.g mp2 doesn't have VBR support in ffmpeg, but it supports bitrates from 32 to 384 kbps. So, if I set -minrate to 32k, -maxrate to 384k, and -b:v to the average of 32+384=208k, then will it automatically trigger VBR mode in mp2 in FFMPEG as well ? I don't use mp2 much, because I encode videos with FFMPEG for Youtube uploading, so I use Opus (with the libopus encoder) the most, but I am asking just out of curiosity.
