h264_vulkan and hevc_vulkan Encode failed on Intel
by Terje J. Hanssen 15 Dec '24

While decode benchmarks test seemingly works on Intel, encode failed as shown below. If here are some missing steps or something wrong with the ffmpeg command lines used, I would be happy to hear back and test alternatives? ls /usr/share/vulkan/icd.d intel_hasvk_icd.x86_64.json intel_icd.x86_64.json lvp_icd.x86_64.json export VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/intel_icd.x86_64.json export ANV_VIDEO_DECODE=1 export ANV_VIDEO_ENCODE=1 vulkaninfo | egrep -i 'decode|encode' VK_KHR_video_decode_h264 : extension revision 9 VK_KHR_video_decode_h265 : extension revision 8 VK_KHR_video_decode_queue : extension revision 8 VK_KHR_video_encode_h264 : extension revision 14 VK_KHR_video_encode_h265 : extension revision 14 VK_KHR_video_encode_queue : extension revision 12 queueFlags = QUEUE_VIDEO_DECODE_BIT_KHR | QUEUE_VIDEO_ENCODE_BIT_KHR VIDEO_CODEC_OPERATION_ENCODE_H264_BIT_KHR VIDEO_CODEC_OPERATION_ENCODE_H265_BIT_KHR VIDEO_CODEC_OPERATION_DECODE_H264_BIT_KHR VIDEO_CODEC_OPERATION_DECODE_H265_BIT_KHR vulkaninfo --summary ========== VULKANINFO ========== Vulkan Instance Version: 1.3.296 Instance Extensions: count = 24 ------------------------------- VK_EXT_acquire_drm_display : extension revision 1 VK_EXT_acquire_xlib_display : extension revision 1 VK_EXT_debug_report : extension revision 10 VK_EXT_debug_utils : extension revision 2 VK_EXT_direct_mode_display : extension revision 1 VK_EXT_display_surface_counter : extension revision 1 VK_EXT_headless_surface : extension revision 1 VK_EXT_surface_maintenance1 : extension revision 1 VK_EXT_swapchain_colorspace : extension revision 5 VK_KHR_device_group_creation : extension revision 1 VK_KHR_display : extension revision 23 VK_KHR_external_fence_capabilities : extension revision 1 VK_KHR_external_memory_capabilities : extension revision 1 VK_KHR_external_semaphore_capabilities : extension revision 1 VK_KHR_get_display_properties2 : extension revision 1 VK_KHR_get_physical_device_properties2 : extension revision 2 VK_KHR_get_surface_capabilities2 : extension revision 1 VK_KHR_portability_enumeration : extension revision 1 VK_KHR_surface : extension revision 25 VK_KHR_surface_protected_capabilities : extension revision 1 VK_KHR_wayland_surface : extension revision 6 VK_KHR_xcb_surface : extension revision 6 VK_KHR_xlib_surface : extension revision 6 VK_LUNARG_direct_driver_loading : extension revision 1 Instance Layers: count = 3 -------------------------- VK_LAYER_KHRONOS_validation Khronos Validation Layer 1.3.296 version 1 VK_LAYER_MESA_device_select Linux device selection layer 1.3.211 version 1 VK_LAYER_MESA_overlay Mesa Overlay layer 1.3.211 version 1 Devices: ======== GPU0: apiVersion = 1.3.296 driverVersion = 24.3.0 vendorID = 0x8086 deviceID = 0x56a1 deviceType = PHYSICAL_DEVICE_TYPE_DISCRETE_GPU deviceName = Intel(R) Arc(tm) A750 Graphics (DG2) driverID = DRIVER_ID_INTEL_OPEN_SOURCE_MESA driverName = Intel open-source Mesa driver driverInfo = Mesa 24.3.0 conformanceVersion = 1.3.6.0 deviceUUID = 8680a156-0800-0000-0300-000000000000 driverUUID = b3041234-0ed8-a53d-ceb8-4ffd54a9fd93 ####################### inxi -CGSz System: Kernel: 6.6.63-1-longterm arch: x86_64 bits: 64 Console: pty pts/0 Distro: openSUSE Tumbleweed-Slowroll 20241202 CPU: Info: 12-core (8-mt/4-st) model: 12th Gen Intel Core i7-12700KF bits: 64 type: MST AMCP cache: L2: 12 MiB Speed (MHz): avg: 800 min/max: 800/4900:5000:3800 cores: 1: 800 2: 800 3: 800 4: 800 5: 800 6: 800 7: 800 8: 800 9: 800 10: 800 11: 800 12: 800 13: 800 14: 800 15: 800 16: 800 17: 800 18: 800 19: 800 20: 800 Graphics: Device-1: Intel DG2 [Arc A750] driver: i915 v: kernel Device-2: Microdia Camera driver: snd-usb-audio,uvcvideo type: USB Display: unspecified server: X.org v: 1.21.1.14 with: Xwayland v: 24.1.4 driver: X: loaded: modesetting unloaded: vesa dri: iris gpu: i915 resolution: 2560x1440~60Hz API: EGL v: 1.5 drivers: iris,swrast platforms: gbm,x11,surfaceless,device API: OpenGL v: 4.6 compat-v: 4.5 vendor: intel mesa v: 24.3.0 renderer: Mesa Intel Arc A750 Graphics (DG2) API: Vulkan v: 1.3.296 drivers: N/A surfaces: xcb,xlib ==================== ffmpeg version 7.1 Copyright (c) 2000-2024 the FFmpeg developers built with gcc 14 (SUSE Linux) ffmpeg -hide_banner -encoders | grep vulkan V....D h264_vulkan H.264/AVC (Vulkan) (codec h264) V....D hevc_vulkan H.265/HEVC (Vulkan) (codec hevc) ###################### ffmpeg -hide_banner -init_hw_device vulkan -i hdv09_04.m2t -vf "format=nv12,hwupload" -c:v h264_vulkan -y hdv09_04_h264_vulkan_nv12.mp4 [mpeg2video @ 0x55db4fe22d80] Invalid frame dimensions 0x0. FFmpeg: "Error muxing a packet" when trying to concatenate two GoPro videos. Why?
by Franck Dernoncourt 09 Dec '24

09 Dec '24

Problem statement I was trying to fix that problem: FFmpeg messes up <https://superuser.com/q/1864065/116475> the original stream order of a.MP4 when running: ffmpeg -sseof -1 -i a.MP4 -map 0:v -map 0:a -map 0:3 -c copy -copy_unknown a_last_1_second.MP4 This causes my attempt to concatenate two GoPro videos losslessly with that FFmpeg command to fail: ffmpeg -safe 0 -f concat -i "list_videos.txt" -map 0:v -map 0:a -map 0:2 -copy_unknown -c copy "ab.mp4" with list_videos.txt containing: file 'a.MP4' file 'b.MP4' since a_last_1_second.mp4 and b.MP4 doesn't have the same stream order. ------------------------------ My failed fix The fix I was trying to implement relies on that logic: let's use FFmpeg to also mess up the original stream order of b.MP4, so that both a.MP4 and b.MP4's stream orders are equally messed up to ensure smooth concatenation. Example: I'll use that GoPro video file <https://ia803401.us.archive.org/19/items/images-for-questions/GoPro_file_ex…> (18.5 MiB) to be both a.MP4 and b.MP4 to make it easier to test. Step 1: extract the last second of a.MP4: ffmpeg -sseof -1 -i a.MP4 -map 0:v -map 0:a -map 0:3 -c copy -copy_unknown a_only_the_last_1sec.MP4 Step 2: Since FFmpeg messes up <https://superuser.com/q/1864065/116475> the original stream order of a.MP4, we can rely on FFmpeg to also mess up the original stream order of b.MP4 (otherwise, concatenate may not work due to different stream orders): ffmpeg -i "b.mp4" -map 0:v -map 0:a -map 0:3 -copy_unknown -c copy "b_with_messed_up_stream_order.mp4" Step 3: concatenate b_with_messed_up_stream_order.mp4 and a_only_the_last_1sec.MP4: ffmpeg -safe 0 -f concat -i "list_videos.txt" -map 0:v -map 0:a -map 0:2 -copy_unknown -c copy "ab.mp4" where list_videos.txt contains: b_with_messed_up_stream_order.mp4 a_only_the_last_1sec.MP4 Tested with ffmpeg version 7.1-full_build-www.gyan.dev on Windows 10 Pro 21H2. However, when trying to concatenate b_with_messed_up_stream_order.mp4 and a_only_the_last_1sec.MP4, I get this error: [concat @ 00000170886fbc00] DTS 59062 < 86086 out of order [aost#0:1/copy @ 0000017088c6fd00] Non-monotonic DTS; previous: 137216, current: 95109; changing to 137217. How can I extract the last few seconds of a GoPro video losslessly with FFmpeg so that it keeps telemetry info and keeps the original stream order?
by Franck Dernoncourt 08 Dec '24

08 Dec '24

I want to extract the last few seconds of a GoPro video losslessly with FFmpeg so that it keeps telemetry info and keeps the original stream order. A GoPro video has 4 streams, in that order: 1. Stream #0:0[0x1](eng): Video 2. Stream #0:1[0x2](eng): Audio 3. Stream #0:2[0x3](eng): Data: none (tmcd / 0x64636D74) (default) 4. Stream #0:3[0x4](eng): Data: bin_data (gpmd / 0x646D7067), 59 kb/s (default) Details: Stream #0:0[0x1](eng): Video: hevc (Main) (hvc1 / 0x31637668), yuvj420p(pc, bt709), 3840x2160 [SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9], 59703 kb/s, 59.94 fps, 59.94 tbr, 60k tbn (default) Metadata: creation_time : 2024-11-23T23:10:03.000000Z handler_name : GoPro H.265 vendor_id : [0][0][0][0] encoder : GoPro H.265 encoder timecode : 23:26:28:23 Stream #0:1[0x2](eng): Audio: aac (LC) (mp4a / 0x6134706D), 48000 Hz, stereo, fltp, 189 kb/s (default) Metadata: creation_time : 2024-11-23T23:10:03.000000Z handler_name : GoPro AAC vendor_id : [0][0][0][0] timecode : 23:26:28:23 Stream #0:2[0x3](eng): Data: none (tmcd / 0x64636D74) (default) Metadata: creation_time : 2024-11-23T23:10:03.000000Z handler_name : GoPro TCD timecode : 23:26:28:23 Stream #0:3[0x4](eng): Data: bin_data (gpmd / 0x646D7067), 59 kb/s (default) Metadata: creation_time : 2024-11-23T23:10:03.000000Z handler_name : GoPro MET I try to use this command to extract the last few seconds of a GoPro video with ffmpeg so that it keeps telemetry info and keeps the original stream order: ffmpeg -sseof -10 -i input.MP4 -map 0:v -map 0:a -map 0:3 -c copy -copy_unknown output.MP4 However, it inverses the order of Stream #0:2[0x3](eng) and Stream #0:3[0x4](eng), i.e. the output file output.MP4 has 4 streams, in that order: 1. One may otherwise try to move -copy_unknown in front of -map 0:3, i.e.: ffmpeg -sseof -10 -i input.MP4 -map 0:v -map 0:a -copy_unknown -map 0:3 -c copy output.MP4 But FFmpeg doesn't care about the order of -copy_unknown relative to -map so that doesn't change the stream order. I'm out of ideas. For testing convenience, here is an example of a GoPro video file <https://ia803401.us.archive.org/19/items/images-for-questions/GoPro_file_ex…> (18.5 MiB). Rename it as input.MP4 to try the aforementioned commands and use -sseof -1 instead of -sseof -10 since the video is only 2-second long. How can I extract the last few seconds of a GoPro video losslessly with ffmpeg so that it keeps telemetry info *and keeps the original stream order*? Thanks!

TS stream audio discontinuity in ffmpeg
by Steve Laufman 05 Dec '24

05 Dec '24

I am using ffmpeg to transcode a TS video stream. For whatever reason, there is a discontinuity in one of the audio streams and it goes missing for some period of time. Try as I may, I cannot get ffmpeg to seamlessly pick up and continue to transcode the audio stream when it re-appears. Is there an option or suggestion as to what I might try in this case? I have tried a lot of things and my current command looks like this: ffmpeg -y -threads 2 -nostats -loglevel warning -probesize 5M -filter_threads 4 -threads 2 -re -fflags discardcorrupt -hwaccel_device 0 -extra_hw_frames 2 -hwaccel_output_format cuda -hwaccel cuda -heavy_compr 1 -thread_queue_size 500 -i "udp://@239.252.11.117:10102?fifo_size=536720&buffer_size=2129920&timeout=800000&demuxer=mpegts" -f mepgts -threads 2 -filter_complex "[0:a:0]aresample=async=1,volume=1.00,asetpts=NB_CONSUMED_SAMPLES/SR/TB,apad [aout1];[0:a:1]aresample=async=1,volume=1.00,asetpts=NB_CONSUMED_SAMPLES/SR/TB,apad [aout2];[0:v:0]fps=30000/1001,yadif_cuda,scale_npp=1280:720:interp_algo=super:format=yuv420p [vout]" -map "[vout]" -map "[aout1]" -map "[aout2]" -c:a aac -b:a 192k -ac:a 2 -copytb 1 -fps_mode cfr -c:v h264_nvenc -b:v 6000k -minrate:v 6000k -maxrate:v 6000k -bufsize:v 12000k -a53cc 1 -tune ll -zerolatency 1 -cbr 1 -forced-idr 1 -strict_gop 1 -threads 2 -profile:v high -level:v 4.2 -bf:v 0 -g:v 15 -metadata service_provider="InnoCoder" -f fifo -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1 -fifo_format mpegts -format_opts muxrate=6707559:pes_payload_size=1528 "udp://@225.105.0.130:10102?pkt_size=1316&bitrate=6707559&burst_bits=10528&ttl=64&disc_start" Here is a test file I have: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1flgJuJdAVWvAA7IZkgNw87l00xkU9pFe/view?usp=… Steve

Digitizing Normal8 or Super8 films
by Michael Koch 05 Dec '24

05 Dec '24

Is it possible to use FFmpeg for digitizing a Normal8 or Super8 film? The framerate is 16 for Normal8 or 18 for Super8, but the motor speed of the projector may have 10% tolerance. I could project the film on a screen and make a FHD video at 180 fps (with Panasonic GH5S camera). There would be a small distortion because the projector and the camera aren't exactly on the same axis, but that could be corrected with the remap filter. I haven't yet tested it. What I expect to see in the video is approximately 5 bright frames followed by 5 dark frames. Is it possible to automatically select one frame from the middle of each bright segment? Or any other ideas? Michael

Extract Motion vectors result in empty log and json files
by Sengupta, Aileen 04 Dec '24

04 Dec '24

Dear Dev Team, I may be new to the FFMpeg world, but I am trying to extract motion vectors into a json file to be used by my code later. I have used all possible combnation as below: ffmpeg -flags2 +export_mvs -i input.mp4 -vf codecview=mv=pf+bf+bb -c:v libx264 -preset fast -crf 18 -an output_with_motion_vectors.mp4 First of all this command runs perfectly fine and delivers me all the motion vector inside the video. ffmpeg -flags2 +export_mvs -i input.mp4 -vf select=gte(n\,0) -vsync vfr -f null - 2> motion_vectors.log This is where I have a problem where I do not get any coordinates of the motion vector files. Am I doing something wrong? I have to parse the log file myself and have the code for that but I wanted to attach that as well. The video is having motion but it is somewhat not able to extract it. In case we need ssma Take Care, Thanks and regards, Aileen Sengupta, Ph.D. Final Year, EE Dept, UTA VEL Lab NH 142 Lead GTA EE 3330, EE 4330, EE 2320/2440, EE 5309/5331 Graduate Student Advisor Fall 2024 || IEEE HKN Epsilon Mu Chair 2025 || Graduate Student Subcommittee IEEE HKN [cid:ac904a3b-e759-4577-8a63-518a3239be07]

Problem creating video segment from still image
by John G. Heim 04 Dec '24

I am blind but I'm trying to create a promotional video for my disabled rock climbing group. I would like to insert a still image into the video. The video has resolution 1280:720 so I resized the image to be less than 1280x720. ffprobe seems to indicate this worked: $ ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 -show_entries stream=width, height snapshot.jpg [STREAM] width=960 height=720 [/STREAM] When I use ffmpeg to create a 2 second video from the image, it seems to flip the XY dimensions: $ ffmpeg -loop 1 -i snapshot.jpg -c:v libx264 -t 2 -pix_fmt yuv420p -y snapshot.mp4 $ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 -show_entries stream=width, height snapshot.mp4 [STREAM] width=720 height=960 [/STREAM] Am I doing something wrong? I can't just look at it to see if it looks right because I'm blind. Here are links to the still image and the video I created: https://people.math.wisc.edu/~jheim/Climbing/snapshot.jpg https://people.math.wisc.edu/~jheim/Climbing/snapshot.mp4

I’m trying to analyze the quality of a video stream over a local network using FFmpeg. My goal is to capture the actual streamed video (with all artifacts, stuttering, or buffering) as experienced in real-time, rather than a reconstructed, smooth output. Currently, the recorded video is perfectly smooth, but the live stream played using ffplay exhibits noticeable stuttering. Additionally, while the duration of the recording matches the original video, the live stream lasts longer, likely due to buffering caused by network instability. Here are the commands I’m using: Sender: ffmpeg -re -i file.mp4 -c:v libx265 -preset veryfast -f mpegts udp://192.168.1.26:1234 Receiver: ffmpeg -i udp://192.168.1.10:1234 -c copy received_fhd.mp4 -fflags nobuffer The recorded file received_fhd.mp4 plays back perfectly, with no stuttering or frame drops, even though the network stream has visible issues when viewed in real-time with ffplay. The recorded file has the same duration as the original video (fhd.mp4), while the real-time stream playback with ffplay takes longer, suggesting delays caused by buffering or network issues. Same issue with with other codes for example vp9. GOAL: I want to capture the actual streamed video as experienced in real-time, with all stuttering, buffering, and artifacts included. This would allow me to analyze the network's impact on the video quality effectively. Questions: 1. How can I modify my commands to record the video stream exactly as it is experienced in real-time, including any network-induced issues? 2. Is there a way to configure FFmpeg to behave more like ffplay in terms of handling and recording the stream? Any guidance or alternative approaches would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Experimented with different codecs (e.g., H.265, VP9) and output formats. Older codes has no delay in transmission so I didn't notice the issue at frist. Explored various ffmpeg options like -fflags nobuffer and -c copy (as documentation says " For example, -codec copy or -codec: copy would copy all the streams without reencoding."), but it still doesn’t replicate the actual stream behavior.
