expressions in -bsf
by Mark Filipak 31 May '24

31 May '24

How do I do the equivalent of this: pts = pts==504223732 ? 504219978 : pts; in '-bsf' in Windows? I can't figure it out. I've tried: -bsf setts=pts='eq(pts\,504223732)504219978' -bsf setts=pts='if(eq(pts\,504223732)\,504219978\,pts)' -bsf 'if(eq(pts\,504223732),setts=pts=504219978)' and many, many variations. There are zero usage examples in the docs. Correct structure and correct quote-usage and the scope of the various 'pts's (input -v- output) are unknown. Thanks! --Mark.

Finding matching frames in a single video
by Sean Grider 31 May '24

31 May '24

I'm trying to use ffmpeg to find timestamps of a video where a given screenshot can be found. Let's say of 30m video, there's a title card at 00:07:00, so I extract that frame as an image with: ffmpeg -i INPUT -qmin 1 -qscale:v 1 -vframes 00:07:00 -f image2 match.png Now I want to find any frames in a video stream that roughly match that captured frame. I'm using this ffmpeg command: ffmpeg -i INPUT.mkv -loop 1 -i match.png -an -filter_complex "blend=difference:shortest=1,blackframe=90:20" -f null - Now I think it's sort of working, but I have a few questions: - Can anyone offer any better commands for what I'm trying to accomplish. All of these commands were found via search and trial and error - The output of the second command shows all of the frames that match, so I think I can parse that output to determine how many contiguous matches there are, but the output is given in frames, pts and t. I assume t means time, but the t value does not correspond at all to the actual timestamp format (00:00:00) of the video. How can I convert the t value into the actual timestamp format? - Can anyone offer any help or documentation on how the blend/difference filter works? I'm not really clear on what my 90:20 value actually means. Thanks Sent with [Proton Mail](https://proton.me/) secure email.

Problems with old TV - Can I decode a new file and re-encode to an older version of a codec?
by bbb 31 May '24

31 May '24

Five years ago, I've bought an inexpensive Samsung TV (ue55nu7099) and I'm using it to watch from minidlna server. I'm not very happy with the firmware player, but it's bearable and I don't want to use an external player. The TV can access the local network but is blocked from internet access. From the beginning, the TV was very picky about the encoding of media files but I found out, that I can make just any file playable when I re-encode it with this command: > ffmpeg -i INPUT.mkv -c:v h264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a ac3 OUTPUT.mkv This stopped working a few weeks back. The TV started to skip frames and sometimes even froze without being able to recover. I was able to solve that by installing an older static version of ffmpeg. > /usr/local/bin/ffmpeg-6.0-amd64-static/ffmpeg -i INPUT.mkv -c:v h264 > -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a ac3 OUTPUT.mkv Again, it's working perfect when I'm re-encoding any file that isn't too new. I am still having some (less severe) problems with some very new files. I am not sure, but I suspect that this older version of ffmpeg can't decode those new files perfectly. Is it possible to use an updated and new version of ffmpeg for decoding a media file and then re-encoding it with an older version of the codecs, so that my TV can handle it?

PNG-->GIF produces weird color aliasing?
by Steven Kan 29 May '24

I have a series of 476 PNGs, exported from Excel in a loop through a series of values to control the plotted range: https://www.kan.org/download/1.png https://www.kan.org/download/2.png https://www.kan.org/download/3.png https://www.kan.org/download/4.png https://www.kan.org/download/5.png etc. If I convert them to MP4: ffmpeg -i %d.png -vf "pad=ceil(iw/2)*2:ceil(ih/2)*2,scale=1920:-1" -c:v libx264 -y WeightLogLapse.mp4 the resulting video looks as I would expect: https://www.kan.org/download/WeightLogLapse.mp4 But if I convert to GIF: ffmpeg -i %d.png -vf "pad=ceil(iw/2)*2:ceil(ih/2)*2,scale=1920:-1" -y WeightLogLapse.gif I get this weird color aliasing: https://www.kan.org/download/WeightLogLapse.gif Am I doing this incorrectly? ffmpeg built without liblensfun
by Chris Wilkinson 27 May '24

27 May '24

Hi all, I've been trying to figure out how to correct lens distortion in video for a very long time, but tonight have discovered that ffmpeg has a plugin for the excellent lensfun library.... but the ubuntu PPA packaged versions for 22.04 are built with --disable-liblensfun (why oh why?). Does anyone know if there is a ffmpeg PPA for Ubuntu 22.04 or a binary version as a snap etc that is built including liblensfun? Best regards,Chris W, NZ

Altering motion vectors in B- and P- frames
by Bart Westenenk 26 May '24

26 May '24

Hello all, I want to alter the motion vectors of B and P frames in a H.264 video. The point of doing this is watermarking / steganography, the goal is to change the motion vectors' width / height based on the watermark. For this, I wanted to try if I can use ffmpeg for this. As far as I can see there is no way for me to edit the motion vectors the H.264 encoder generates. I have considered the AVFilters (at which point the motion vectors don't exist yet) and BitStreamFilters (which are so generic that they don't know about motion vectors, nor can they alter them). Is this correct? If this is incorrect, how would I start altering the motion vectors? I have found multiple software solutions and libraries that can provide me the motion vectors, but no way to alter them. I am willing to go into the source code of FFMPEG or some other encoder to see how I can alter the source code so it will support my use case. I hope I have provided you with enough information and can help me in some way with this. If you have any questions or would need more information, please let me know.

Problems concatenating mp4 files: Non-monotonic DTS; previous: 824975, current: 140284; changing to 824976.
by iburman＠compuscience.com 25 May '24

I need to concatenate several mp4 files that were taken with a cell phone, where some of them are landscape and others portrait. By simply concatenate them, the ones that are portrait end up rotated by 90 degrees in the final output. To solve this problem, I decided to rotate the portrait ones one by one before concatenating them. However, when I concatenate landscape together with rotated portrait, I get the following error messages: [mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2 @ 000001b2922b0fc0] Auto-inserting h264_mp4toannexb bitstream filter [vost#0:0/copy @ 000001b292c6d1c0] Non-monotonic DTS; previous: 824975, current: 140284; changing to 824976. This may result in incorrect timestamps in the output file. .....hundreds more like this. In addition, when I watch the video, the portrait one seems to be static on one of the first frames. This frame is shown for the duration of the video. Why is this happening and how can I fix it? Correct configuration for Mac Pro 6, 1 AMD FirePro D500s?
by Scott Lutz 24 May '24

I have been trying for a couple of days to leverage the h264_videotoolbox hardware acceleration capabilities of ffmpeg on dual AMD FirePro D500s of my Mac Pro 6,1, but without success. Here is an example of the output I've been getting most recently: ffmpeg -i infile.mkv -s hd720 -c:v h264_videotoolbox -c:a aac outfile.mkv [h264_videotoolbox @ 0x7f8494b06b40] Error: cannot create compression session: -12903 [h264_videotoolbox @ 0x7f8494b06b40] Try -allow_sw 1. The hardware encoder may be busy, or not supported. [vost#0:0/h264_videotoolbox @ 0x7f8494b074c0] Error while opening encoder - maybe incorrect parameters such as bit_rate, rate, width or height. [vf#0:0 @ 0x7f8493f065c0] Error sending frames to consumers: Generic error in an external library [vf#0:0 @ 0x7f8493f065c0] Task finished with error code: -542398533 (Generic error in an external library) [vf#0:0 @ 0x7f8493f065c0] Terminating thread with return code -542398533 (Generic error in an external library) [vost#0:0/h264_videotoolbox @ 0x7f8494b074c0] Could not open encoder before EOF [vost#0:0/h264_videotoolbox @ 0x7f8494b074c0] Task finished with error code: -22 (Invalid argument) [vost#0:0/h264_videotoolbox @ 0x7f8494b074c0] Terminating thread with return code -22 (Invalid argument) [out#0/matroska @ 0x7f8483f04080] Nothing was written into output file, because at least one of its streams received no packets. Possibly due to the age of these machines, there isn't a load of info on the wider interwebs, so I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to make this work, ideally for both x264 and x265? Thanks! Scott

Low FPS with H.264 Encoding When Using -pix_fmt yuv420p
by Lisa 23 May '24

23 May '24

Hello, when I use the following command in Raspberry Pi 4 model B, I am getting only 8 fps for 1080p resolution. *ffmpeg -use_wallclock_as_timestamps 1 -t 60 -i /dev/video0 -c:v h264_v4l2m2m -b:v 8M -maxrate 2M -vsync 2 -bufsize 4M -r 30 -s hd1080 -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 30 -qmin 20 -qmax 50 output_1080p.mp4* And when I use the same command, but remove -pix_fmt yuv420p, the output video is 27 fps. *ffmpeg -use_wallclock_as_timestamps 1 -t 60 -i /dev/video0 -c:v h264_v4l2m2m -b:v 8M -maxrate 2M -vsync 2 -bufsize 4M -r 30 -s hd1080 -g 30 -qmin 20 -qmax 50 output1_1080p.mp4* Why does the fps reduce when -pix_fmt yuv420p is used in the ffmpeg command? Both the output videos have pixel format of YUV420, but when I use '-pix_fmt yuv420p' in command, why does it reduce the fps ? What are the default settings to tune the Encoding ?

Concatenating mp4 files rotates the video
by iburman＠compuscience.com 22 May '24

I need to concatenate several mp4 videos taken with a cell phone. It happens that the resulting concatenated video ends up rotated. I am using the method shown in https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/Concatenate, more specifically concat protocol, where I convert the mp4 in a MPEG-2 TS file and than concatenate the TS files. Below is the output of the used commands. I noticed that converting to TS files has some rotate info under metadata but I don't have the required knowledge to understand why this is there. Anyways, what do I need to do to avoid these unrequested rotations? Commands Output: Concatenating 2 files 11_PeopleWaitingForTheTrain.mp4 12_I_Am_Waiting.mp4 Protocol: mp4 EXE: -i 11_PeopleWaitingForTheTrain.mp4 -c copy 001.ts ffmpeg version Trying to use 'ebur128' results to set up 'loudnorm'
by Mark Filipak 22 May '24

22 May '24

Attachments: 1. original ebur128.jpg 2. loudnorm-thresh=-85 pan ebur128.jpg 3. what I want ebur128.jpg ___1. The original has a 'shelf' just below LU = -13. That's soft speech. The peak is at LU = +9. That's shouting. So the transform I want goes like this: LU = -18..-14 gets no boost. LU = -14..+9 gets a linear boost to -11..+9. I assume 'LU' is Loudness Unit', eh? What is a loudness unit? Now, the range of 'loudnorm=measured_thresh' is -99..0, so 100 steps. Heaven knows what the scale is and whether it's linear. No matter: Pressing on... If LU = -18..9 maps linearly to 'measured_thresh' = -99..0, then Lu = -14 is 'measured_thresh' = -85. I use "-85" in the next step. ___2. This command: ffmpeg -i "original.mp4" -map 0:a -filter_complex "[0:a]loudnorm=measured_thresh=-85, pan=stereo|FL<FL+0.5*FC+0.6*BL+0.6*SL|FR<FR+0.5*FC+0.6*BR+0.6*SR,ebur128=video=1:peak=true[a]" -map "[a]" -c:v libx265 -x265-params crf=16 -c:a ac3 "loudnorm-thresh=-85 pan ebur128.mp4" maps LU = -13..+9 to -11..-7. That brings the soft speech up wonderfully, but the shouting is dead. ___3. What I want maps LU = -14..+9 to -11..+9. But to map linearly with 'loudnorm' I need to specify 4 parameters: measured_I = -99..0 measured_LRA = 0..99 measured_TP = -99..99 measured_thresh = -99..0 I sorta know what 'thresh' is and I think it is '-85'. But I have no idea what 'I' and 'LRA' and 'TP' are. I have no idea how to measure them. I have no idea what the measurement units are. And I have no idea what their physical meanings are. Is there a way to measure the source video to determine these numbers? I'm partway there, but the rest of the way seems impossibly difficult; there's just too many unknowns. Help! Please! I thank you, --Mark.

Detect Frames with Green Dot?
by Steven Kan 21 May '24

21 May '24

Hi, Possibly off-topic, but maybe not. My time-lapse camera rig takes interior photos of my bee hive every 10 minutes. I installed a new queen 10 days ago, and she was released from her tiny cage about 5 days ago. See the little wooden box at the bottom of the photo, here: https://www.kan.org/pictures/2024-05-21-11-00-11.jpg Now that she is out and running around, she might be visible in one of the subsequent photos, but she’s very difficult to find, by eye, by scanning though hundreds or thousands of images. In 2021, with a vastly inferior setup, I did get lucky and find her once: https://www.kan.org/pictures/CombBuilderTimeLapse2021_Queen1.jpg Is there any function in ffmpeg that could detect a frame of video that has a region of at least M x N pixels that is at least XX% “green,” for various values of green? Or am I trying to use a hammer as a Philip’s-head screwdriver? Thanks!

Using 'ebur128' results to set 'loudnorm=measured_thresh'
by Mark Filipak 21 May '24

21 May '24

I've attached ebur128.jpg. It's only 37 k-bytes. Do you see that first 'shelf' just below LU = -13? I want to boost that the most by percent, maybe double the power (3 dB). I want to boost LU = 9 not at all, and I want to boost everything below LU = -14 not at all. So the transform I want would be like this: LU = -18..-14 gets no boost. LU = -14..9 gets linear boost to -7..9. I assume 'LU' is Loudness Unit', eh? Heaven knows what the scale is and whether the scale is linear -- I'm used to dB, not LU. Of course, LU can't be dB because LU goes above zero. Now, the range of 'loudnorm=measured_thresh' is -99..0, so 100 steps. Heaven knows what the scale is and whether the scale is linear. No matter: Pressing on... If LU = -18..9 maps linearly to 'measured_thresh' = -99..0, then Lu = -14 is 'measured_thresh' = -85. I'll try that and come back to this thread to report the results. Wish me luck. Disclosure: The audio and the video in ebur128.mp4 (upon which ebur128.jpg is based) are not perfectly synchronized and the more I listen to the audio while looking at the slope of the graph roll out, the less confident I become because the graph is not going up and down with the audio. The truth is, I don't know what the hell 'ebur128' is telling me! --Mark.

Streaming a static image fails
by Deon Stoltz 21 May '24

21 May '24

I need to stream a static image with information on a network to Tv's. ffmpeg does convert the image to a transport stream but VLC refuse to play it as well the TV's. ffplay does play it but complains about invalid frame dimensions. I therefore added the frame size but it has no effect. Note that the error is still reported in ffplay. I upgraded to the latest version of ffmpeg (compiled in a subdir because Mint version is old and the .deb file did not want to install). Any idea what could be the reason? Re: [FFmpeg-user] Retain but don't playback frames outside of edit

> This may work: > Get the timestamp of the first displayed frame. > Then do a transcode of all frames with ignore editlist, Use the setts bsf on the > video stream to offset timestamps so that the first displayed frame has a dts > of 0. Hi, thanks for the response. It seems that method would work specifically in the scenario I mentioned, but I'm looking for a more generic approach that would apply to videos with potentially multiple edit lists, that could be dropping frames anywhere within the video. Also, I'd like the timestamps of the output video to remain the same as the original, so essentially preserving the edit-lists from the original, which I don't think the above would accomplish. Is there a way to do that?

abitscope won't run
by Mark Filipak 20 May '24

20 May '24

Howdy, Maybe I don't need 'abitscope'. It's just an experiment when I found that 'oscilloscope' didn't display audio levels. I have a 5.1 channel DTS soundtrack. It's the only soundtrack. I want to mux in a new, 2 channel AC3 soundtrack with soft dialog emphasized. I'm using 'loudnorm' & 'pan'. Here's the problem: I need to measure the sound level at a particular half-second moment in order to set 'loudnorm's threshold. I need to do that because I can't get a linear gain that doesn't emphasize background sounds. Those background sounds are fainter, but they are annoying. How would you do it? Any advice is greatly appreciated. --Mark.

Is there any workaround to set drawbox color conditionally?
by 윤여경 16 May '24

16 May '24

Hi, i want to know if it is possible that setting drawbox color conditionally as drawtext like below ffmpeg -hide_banner -fflags nobuffer -y -i - \ -filter_complex "drawtext=textfile=max_temp.txt: \ reload=16: \ x=640: y=264: fontsize=36: fontcolor=red, \ drawbox=x=640:y=300:w=640:h=480:color=red" \ ... I want to change box color if the value of max_temp.txt is higher than 50 or can i read color value from an external file just like textfile of drawtext?

Advice on optimizing bitstream filter usage - unexplained frame count differences
by Gia Ferrari 11 May '24

11 May '24

Greetings, I feel I've come up against the limits of my ability to narrow down the cause of a surprising behavior related to bitstream filters, and could use a pointer or two on where to focus my learning. A general description of the system challenge I'm trying to solve is at the bottom of this message if you're curious, but my primary interest is in understanding why my solution is yielding odd results. Source file is HEVC, containing 1557 keyframes (and many more non-keyframes). I'd like to select only the keyframes before decoding (CPU is scarce), rescale the selected frames, and write to a new MP4. $ ffmpeg -i test_input.mp4 -bsf:v "noise=drop=not(key)" -vf "scale=320:-1" -an -fps_mode vfr -enc_time_base -1 -c:v libx265 -crf 32 -preset ultrafast test_output_combined_command.mp4 This takes 5 minutes and is CPU-bound. It also generates much fewer frames than I expect, resulting in choppy video. If I split up the operation into two separate commands, the operation completes in 20 seconds and results in a visually-correct video. $ ffmpeg -i test_input.mp4 -bsf:v "noise=drop=not(key)" -an -fps_mode vfr -enc_time_base -1 -c:v copy test_intermediate.mp4 $ ffmpeg -i test_intermediate.mp4 -vf "scale=320:-1" -fps_mode vfr -c:v libx265 -crf 32 -preset ultrafast test_output_split_command.mp4 Checking the 3 output files with ffprobe reveals some surprising results: $ ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 -count_frames -count_packets -show_entries stream=nb_read_frames,nb_read_packets -of flat test_output_combined_command.mp4 streams.stream.0.nb_read_frames="187" streams.stream.0.nb_read_packets="187" $ ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 -count_frames -count_packets -show_entries stream=nb_read_frames,nb_read_packets -of flat test_intermediate.mp4 streams.stream.0.nb_read_frames="1557" streams.stream.0.nb_read_packets="1557" $ ffprobe -v error -select_streams v:0 -count_frames -count_packets -show_entries stream=nb_read_frames,nb_read_packets -of flat test_output_split_command.mp4 streams.stream.0.nb_read_frames="1557" streams.stream.0.nb_read_packets="1557" I'm at a bit of a loss to explain these differences. Note that the second ffprobe command (on test_intermediate.mp4) took multiple minutes to run, while the others were almost instantaneous. test_intermediate.mp4 is also nearly the same filesize as the input file, despite containing one thirtieth of the frames. I feel like I'm missing a fundamental concept here. Why does one approach generate more frames than the other? Is noise=drop causing empty packets to be written somewhere? Thanks for any and all hints. Application context: A system I'm working on generates large HEVC MP4s on disk. These are aged out over time to conserve space. When that happens, I'd like to generate low-fps (anything above 0.25FPS is fine) low-resolution (320:180 is enough, believe it or not) versions of these files to use elsewhere. I've got meager CPU resources to dedicate to this. I've made the following observations and mitigations: - Decoding the full stream takes significant CPU, too much for me to spare. To get around this, I drop all non-keyframes before decoding via -bsf:v "noise=drop=not(key)". This brings down the cost to acceptable levels. The source of the video files reliably includes a keyframe every 2 seconds. Hardware decoding options are not available in my environment. - Encoding at the resolution I need (320:180) using the veryfast or ultrafast preset is very much fast enough for my needs, provided the input framerate is suitably reduced as per above. - Scaling the video down to 320:180 is also fast enough, again provided input framerate reduction. -- Gia Ferrari (she/they) https://giferrari.net Sent with [Proton Mail](https://proton.me/) secure email.

dolby vision decoding
by bbb 10 May '24

10 May '24

I've read somewhere that ffmpeg recently made some progress on dolby vision support. I do have a few files that I can't play on all of my devices unless I want to see some purple faces and other funny colours. I'd be happy if I could transcode these to normal 4k files (some say it should fall back to that automatically, but it doesn't).

DTSes & PTSes

DTSes & PTSes only exist in MPEG PESes for I-frames. So, where/how is FFmpeg getting the DTSes & PTSes that it shows for B- & P-frames? --Mark.

A53 Captions Garbled If Frame Duplication Occurs
by Shane Warren 08 May '24

08 May '24

I ingest some multicast video that has a53 captions embedded in h264 video, the video claims to have a framerate of 29.97 but it must not quite be that because ffmpeg duplicates frames when transcoding this stream. The output stream has a53 captions, but they appear to be somewhat garbled, like some letters are duplicated, sometimes. I decided to git bisect since I knew this worked in a much older ffmpeg binary I had. I finally found the commit that broke this: a11ab647304307d0340fd052e04cf638b6bef309 : fftools/ffmpeg: share the code encoding a single frame between video and audio Call do_video_stats() for every video packet produced by the encoder, rather than for every frame sent to the encoder. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The key part that was missed in this commit was calling this directly after avcodec_send_frame: // Make sure Closed Captions will not be duplicated av_frame_remove_side_data(in_picture, AV_FRAME_DATA_A53_CC); I fixed this in that commit, and captions worked again. I tried to fix it the same way in a the current ffmpeg source by changing: ffmpeg_enc.c encode_frame: ret = avcodec_send_frame(enc, frame); if (ret < 0 && !(ret == AVERROR_EOF && !frame)) { av_log(ost, AV_LOG_ERROR, "Error submitting %s frame to the encoder\n", type_desc); return ret; } +if (frame != NULL) +{ + av_frame_remove_side_data(frame, AV_FRAME_DATA_A53_CC); +} But that didn't fix the problem, I suspect this is needed when a frame is duplicated, but I can't figure out the place to put that. Anyone have any ideas what I need to change to get captions working in the current ffmpeg source?

Question about videos with alpha channel - Pro res 4444
by vishopper 08 May '24

08 May '24

Hi I have a question about video Pro res 4444 with alpha channel. In original video I have an person on transparent background. While converting in to other video formats transparent background is turned to black color. Quicktime player shows video same way - background turned to black. Is it a possible to use any tags, so that background will appear white instead of black, while converted to other formats like MPEG? Here is a sample clip (64 MB) https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/p5e8qgicii5tvmpox1wek/carla_mini.mov?rlkey=q… Thank you! Martin

Retain but don't playback frames outside of edit list for transcode
by Anne Wu 08 May '24

08 May '24

Hi, Looking for some guidance on if handling edit-lists this way is possible. I recently ran into a situation where I need to transcode videos that include edit lists. The edit-list specifies to drop the first few frames of the video, and thus the output ends up with fewer frames than the original. Is there a way to retain these frames in the output, but not have them play during playback? I’m looking for the number of frames in the input and output file to be the same. The original video has 386 frames. This is the transcode command that outputs a file with 376 frames: ffmpeg -i ./original.mov -c:v libx264 -fps_mode passthrough output.mov If I use the -ignore_editlist 1 option, it will retain the frames outside the edit-list and end up with 386 frames. But it still plays back all the frames, which is not the desired behavior: ffmpeg -ignore_editlist 1 -i ./original.mov -c:v libx264 -fps_mode passthrough output_ignoreEditList.mov Using -c:v copy instead of transcode works, but I need to do a transcode and not a copy. The original, transcoded, and transcoded with -ignore_editlist 1 files are available here<https://f.io/jxcwZteI>. Thanks!

Why cuts & concats sometimes don't work
by Mark Filipak 08 May '24

08 May '24

Hi All, I'm still investigating why cuts & concats sometimes don't work. I've found that sometimes open GOPs are physically in PTS order & sometimes in DTS order. I reckon that's part/all of the problem. I have some questions. Command #1: ffmpeg -i y:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_03_2.VOB -map 0 -copyts -c copy -f framecrc ->>"%TEMP%\framecrc.txt" Command #2: ffmpeg -i y:\VIDEO_TS\VTS_03_2.VOB -map 0:v -copyts -vf showinfo -c:v rawvideo -f null - 2>>"%TEMP%\showinfo.txt" ===== OUTPUT FOR THE FIRST FOUR FRAMES ===== packet_dts packet_pts packet_duration / / / packet_size / / / / __0xCRC___ //_(actual)_ #1: 126110985, 126118492, 4504, 77348, 0x3748adeb // 38 packs 126115489, 126115489, 3003, 18060, 0x6843df67 // 9 packs 126118492, -9223372036854775808, 4504, 37184, 0xc96165d5 // 18 packs 126122996, 126122996, 3003, 19440, 0x2b57fd37 // 10 packs #2: n: 0 pts: 126118492 duration: 4504 type:I n: 1 pts: 126122996 duration: 3003 type:B n: 2 pts: 126125999 duration: 4504 type:P n: 3 pts: 126130503 duration: 3003 type:B ===== QUESTIONS ===== The PTSes of #1 & #2 don't match. Why is that? In #1, 'duration' is the duration of what? There are 3003 ticks per frame, so where does a number like 4504 come from? #1 & https://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-all.html#framecrc-1 claims there are 4 packets but there's actually 75, so what is meant by the word "packet"? And the biggest question of all: DTSes & PTSes only exist in MPEG PESes for I-frames. So, where/how is FFmpeg getting TSes for B- & P-frames? ===== END NOTES ===== Physically, there is the end of a P followed by B P B P B B, then I B P B / / / / frame type: I _PTS 126118492__DTS 126110985_____________/ / / / / / / frame type: B __________________________________________/ / / / / frame type: P __________________________________________/ / / frame type: B __________________________________________/ FFmpeg reports only the I B P B and the frames that follow them. --Mark.

FFMPEG concatenating a transcode as 59.88 fps instead of 60 fps
by Ryan Quinlan 06 May '24

06 May '24

Hello all, I am transcoding an image sequence to a 10 frame 60fps .mov files using the first command below. I am then concatenating the exported videos using the second command below. *Transcode* ffmpeg -y -r 60 -probesize 13M -start_number 1001 -i 'input_video.%04d.jpeg' -c:v libx265 -pix_fmt yuv420p10le -crf 28 -preset slower -tag:v hvc1 -vf lut3d='output_lut.cube' -r 60 -frames:v 10 -movflags faststart output_video_0001.mov *Concatenate* ffmpeg -y -f concat -safe 0 -i input_concat_list.txt -c copy output_concat.mov I expected the final file from the concatenated videos to be 60fps. I am using the -r flag twice, so it sets the input frame rate for the image sequence and then making sure the output is 60fps as well. After the transcode the resulting chunks are each 60fps. After the concatenation though, when checking the frame rate in VLC, instead of the desired 60fps VLC is showing the resulting video is 59.979960. I tried using the frame rate flag when concatenating, but that didn't help. Thank you for any assistance. Ryan

Alternative MP4 file extensions compatibility
by Enrico Palmeri 05 May '24

05 May '24

Hi, I normallyuse Ffmpeg to cut and join AAC audio files with concat and SS copy commands. These commands work with general mp4 file container and .mp4 file extension only. Most of the mp4 files contain also a videotrack, but many apps produce audio only AAC files with .m4a extension for general audio, .m4b extension for audiobooks and .m4r extension for ringtones instead of the general .mp4 extension. In order to work with these files, I am am forced to rename the file extension everytime. I woulb be confortable if FFmpeg was able to deal with these alternative extesions for mpeg-4 audio files. Thank you for your interest Yours faithfully Enrico Palmeri

Where is FPS in the CLI output?
by Odessa TV 04 May '24

04 May '24

Hello, all In previous versions of FFmpeg, in cases when used -c copy, in the CLI output displayed frame numbers and fps. In FFmpeg-7 with -c copy now displayed only bitrate, uptime and speed. Is it possible to enable the fps displaying in the CLI output? Best regards, Serhii

Use processed filename as draw text after tmix, in one pass?
by Steven Kan 03 May '24

03 May '24

Planning ahead to the successor to my honeycomb time-lapse video from 2022, processed using tmix per advice from this group: https://ffmpeg.org//pipermail/ffmpeg-user/2022-April/054742.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dUGbGcGE2c This time I’m capturing the photos with a dSLR and gphoto on a Raspberry Pi, and the dSLR does not burn in a timestamp. This is actually a good thing, because I don’t like how my timestamps got tmixed away last time. I’d like to apply them after tmix. I’m saving the photos with the timestamp as the sortable filename, e.g. 2024-03-06-11-40-11.jpg This time I’d like to tmix 50 frames, read the filename of the 50th frame, re-arrange the text of the filename to U.S. style, e.g. "03/06/24, 11:40:11 AM", and then drawtext it onto the output. Can this be done in one pass? Or would I need to do a first pass to create the text fields in some companion files, e.g. 2024-03-06-11-40-11.txt, or even multiple passes to do the tmix first and then the drawtext? I’d like to avoid multiple passes of video processing to avoid generation loss, if possible. Thanks!

Exposure Compensation within ffmpeg?
by Steven Kan 03 May '24

03 May '24

Here are the results of my time-lapse-footage-to-date of my bees building comb in their hive box: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rlji3udrPc Despite I’m using a dSLR with fixed shutter speed and aperture, there’s still a lot of exposure variation throughout the sequence. Is there a filter within ffmpeg to equalize/normalize the exposure values throughout the video? It would be even better if that exposure value could be equalized for some region-of-interest, e.g. the static parts of the images that have no bees or comb. Thanks!

Generate log keeping information appearing on screen
by CMG DiGiTaL 02 May '24

02 May '24

I run a command to normalize an Audio file and write the output to a log file according to the level I want. Full command: ffmpeg -hide_banner -i "C:\Users\%username%\Desktop\Music.mp3" -af "loudnorm=linear=true:I=-10.0:LRA=11:tp=-0.1:measured_I=-9.8:measured_LRA=2.8:measured_tp=+0.5:measured_thresh=-20.0:offset=-0.5:print_format=summary" -c:v copy -id3v2_version 3 -metadata:s:v title="Album cover" -metadata:s:v comment="Cover (front)" -acodec mp3 -b:a 320k -ar:a 44100 "C:\Users\%username%\Desktop\Normalizando_lufs_tst\Music.mp3" -v 32 2>"C:\Users\%username%\Desktop\Logs\Music.log" How do I generate the log, but keep the conversion information on the screen as well?

Remuxing TS to MP4 causes black frame in Apple playback scenarios
by Sid Sethupathi 02 May '24

02 May '24

Hello, I have a process that remuxes short HLS playlists into an mp4 format. The output mp4 in this process has an all black first frame when played back in either Safari or Quicktime Player. Everywhere else, the first frame does not have this black frame. The process is an internal tool that uses libav directly so it's hard to share the code, but I think I can reproduce via an ffmpeg command line invocation against a single TS segment, so I'm hoping to be able to solve the problem by understanding how to change the ffmpeg command. All the sample files can be found in this public Google Drive: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1L8T5T4l_GUzxRnhjH-ojnT6-44FQLQq1?us… . bbb_2.ts is the second segment of Big Buck Bunny (sourced from this test stream: https://test-streams.mux.dev/x36xhzz/url_0/193039199_mp4_h264_aac_hd_7.m3u8) If you open this ts file in Quicktime player or Safari, the first frame is NOT black. bbb_2_remuxed.mp4 has been remuxed using the following command: "ffmpeg -i bbb_2.ts -c copy -f mp4 bbb_2_remuxed.mp4". If you open it up in Quicktime Player or Safari, the first frame IS black. I think I traced it down to an extra entry in the "elst" atom. If you probe this remuxed mp4 with trace level debugging on ("ffprobe -v trace bbb_2_remuxed.mp4") there's a short duration entry in the edit list of the video track. [mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2 @ 0x7fd357104bc0] type:'elst' parent:'edts' sz: 40 8 40 [mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2 @ 0x7fd357104bc0] track[0].edit_count = 2 [mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2 @ 0x7fd357104bc0] duration=15 time=-1 rate=1.000000 [mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2 @ 0x7fd357104bc0] duration=10000 time=2999 rate=1.000000 According to the Quicktime file format docs, the parent of the "elst" atom is "edts" and it is optional, so I removed that atom using mp4edit in the Bento4 tool kit. This produced "bbb_2_remuxed_no_edts.mp4". If you open this file in Quicktime or Safari, the first frame is NOT black. bbb_2_transcoded.mp4 is a transcoded version using "ffmpeg -i bbb_2.ts -video_track_timescale 90K -movflags +faststart bbb_2_transcoded.mp4". If you open this file in Quicktime or Safari, the first frame is NOT black. If you inspect the atoms in this file, the video "elst" atom is still there, but it only has a single entry in the list. [mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2 @ 0x7fe3ecf06040] type:'elst' parent:'edts' sz: 28 8 28 [mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2 @ 0x7fe3ecf06040] track[0].edit_count = 1 [mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2 @ 0x7fe3ecf06040] duration=10017 time=3000 rate=1.000000 So, ultimately I think the extra entry in the elst edit table is the cause of the issue. My question is whether it is possible to not have that happen via the ffmpeg/libav invocation, or whether this is a problem with the source material? Thanks, Sid

Help needed with command
by Arjun Kaneria 02 May '24

I have a video editor app, so videos can be of any dimension and at any position in the scene. I want to apply a transition between 2 videos which are placed side by side in the timeline with one starting immediately after another but those 2 videos can be of any dimension and at any position with crop and rotation options. I have successfully managed to produce an export command using overlay filter which combines videos at any given time at any position transparently. For transition I and trying to replace overlay with xfade. The xfade filter requires 2 videos to have the same fps, and the same dimensions to combine and apply various transition effects. The initial command with overlay. Any possible help or suggestion is appreciated. Thanks,
