ffprobe returns wrong "refs" in stream

Hi, on the commandline I call ffprobe -loglevel quiet -of compact=s=_ -select_streams v -show_entries stream=refs video.mp4 and get the result stream_refs=1 When I add an argument, I'm presented with a different result ffprobe -loglevel quiet -of compact=s=_ -select_streams v -show_entries stream=refs -analyze_frames video.mp4 returns stream_refs=16 I took some time and a step debugger. ffprobe calls a function avformat_find_stream_info from its open_input_file Deep down there is a variable avctx that says refs=16 That information is lost. Later, under certain conditions, - if (do_read_frames || do_read_packets) { - the video is read and decoded. Only then, refs is populated with the correct value. I'm wondering why it is output, at all, if I call ffprobe without analyze_frames, when the value is wrong. I saw there's the function codec_close in demux.c that calls ret = avcodec_parameters_from_context(par_tmp, sti->avctx); ret = avcodec_parameters_to_context(avctx_new, par_tmp); avctx_new->pkt_timebase = sti->avctx->pkt_timebase; This looks to me, like you are saving the timebase. Can refs be saved in a similar manner and output as the correct value without analyzing frames? Best, Bernhard

h.262 to h.265 with bad results (vmaf score <= 85)

Hello, once again a new try with additional information. I did try to compress h.262 videos to h.265 and would expect, if I compress it to half of the size a comparison e.g. with vivictpp would give a result, that nearby no difference will be seen. (Refer also to https://netflixtechblog.com/vmaf-the-journey-continues-44b51ee9ed12 . In this context "bad" for me does mean a vmaf score <= 85.) But its not. The following command I use (crf 20 only as example) : Code: #!/bin/sh for f in *.ts; do ffmpeg -y -i "$f" -vcodec libx265 -crf 20 -preset slow -vf nlmeans="1.6:7:5:3:3" -c:a copy "$(basename "$f" .ts).mkv";done ffmpeg info of an example video : Stream #0:0[0x100]: Video: mpeg2video (Main) ([2][0][0][0] / 0x0002), yuv420p(tv, progressive), 720x576 [SAR 64:45 DAR 16:9], 25 fps, 25 tbr, 90k tbn, start 0.124000 The videos all ways have a non square pixel format. Are there any special vf parameter to handle this pixel format ? Any ideas to improve it ? (Beneath, its not a question for people who live in a lossless video world, also to say h.265 is a lossy codec is wrong, crf 0 leads to a lossless result) Thanks

convert images of a certain range into a video

Hi, While using Blender to create animations, Blender creates a lot of images - one per frame. Currently there are 36000 of those. Blender is able to create videos directly, but then - if something needs to be corrected - you need to create the whole thing again instead of just correcting a couple of frames. To create a video from those images,which are named like so: <frame-number>.<jpg>, I use this command line: ffmpeg -y -loglevel 16 -r 25 -f image2 -s 960x960 -start_number $1 -i %04d.jpg -vcodec libx264 -crf 25 -pix_fmt yuv420p $2 where $1 is the number of the frame to start with and $2 is the filename of the video to create. Is there any simple way to specifiy the number of the frame to stop the process - even if there are more available?

inject ntp time to rtsp sender report

Hello, I wonder if it is possible or foreseeable to inject a given ntp time per video/audio frame into the sender report sent when using ffmpeg to send rtsp streams to a server. Currently it seems that it always uses the wall clock to generate these reports. I would like to be able to inject my own ntp timestamps since the video is generated from orther rtsp sources with their own ntp timing info. Would it maybe be possible to use the NUT broadcast mode for this? Best Daniel

howto speedup (speedup!) ffmpeg?

Hi All. It’s my first post, hope will do it good 😊 I tried *a lot* of configurations to speedup a ffmpeg conversion to have - ie. – a 16x (or more) video. Any configuration requires some minutes to do it. So I tried (you’ll laugh…) VLC + infinite scroll mouse and I can see my 1hr video in 10sec, immediately, without conversions, without freezes, without losing anything must be not lost. Why VLC can show my 1hr video in 10sec and ffmpeg requires many minutes to produce a ready-to-see video? Question B: Why VLC can show my 1hr video with a (max) 32x speedup in real time and ffmpeg requires… (blah blah, see above)? Thnaks for your ideas! L

Software decoding may depend on how fast your drive, how well media file was cached (I run short tests from tmpfs), was cpufreq governor active .... Usual advice is to check temperatures/voltages with "sensors" under load (if they show believable values), ran memtest, look if other programs exhibit some strange behavior .... >
