FFprobe V7/8 failure to read HDR Dolby Video
by Joanna White 19 Sep '25

19 Sep '25

Hi lovely FFmpeg team! We just upgraded an Ubuntu server running automations for the BFI National Archive from FFmpeg v4.4.2 to FFmpeg v7.1.1, then v8.0. We have HDR Dolby Vision JPEG2000 MXF files from an external supplier that automations using FFprobe v4 already partially processed, but which in v7 and v8 are being rejected with this message (returning exit status 1): [mxf @ 0xfefa0f7b0600 ] error reading header metadata N_10683320_06of20.mxf: Invalid data found when processing input FFprobe v4 does raise a couple of warnings (returns exit status 0): [mxf @ 0x55e53763c840 ] wrapping of stream 0 is unknown [mxf @ 0x55e53763c840 ] IndexSID 129 segment 0 has invalid IndexExitRate Our automation scripts capture the exit status 0 as a sign of file readability/health so the FFppeg upgrade these files are not progressing - no doubt for good reason. I’d be interested to know more about this failure please and how we might get them progressing through FFmpeg. I attach metadata text files from MediaInfo, regular and mediatrace. I'm sorry but we cannot supply the source files, but happy to extract any other metadata you may need to aid diagnosis. Thank you for this amazing software — it’s such a saviour for AV archiving generally! ffplay drawtext frame_num
by Hans Carlson 17 Sep '25

17 Sep '25

First, I realize I'm using an older version of ffmpeg (6.1.2). If this has been fixed/changed in a newer version or if this is the intended behavior that's fine, I'd just like to know which it is. I'm using ffplay and the drawtext filter to display the time and frame number overlayed on a video using the following command: ffplay -i video.mkv -vf "drawtext=text='%{pts\:hms} (%{pts}) FrameNum=%{frame_num} FrameType=%{pict_type}':start_number=1:fontfile=/usr/share/fonts/dejavu/DejaVuSans.ttf:fontsize=60:fontcolor=white:box=1:boxcolor=black" This works fine in that it displays the info. The problem is with frame_num. If I use the ffplay seek forward or backward commands or a right mouse click to seek to a percentage of the video, then the frame_num is reset to 1 (ie start_number) and then starts counting from that seek point. Is this how frame_num is supposed to work or is (maybe was) this a bug? If this is the intended behavior for the frame_num keyword, then is there an alternate keyword that will always the display the absolute frame number rather than what appears to be a frame number relative to the current seek point? Thanks. Complete output of ffplay command ------------------------------------------- $ ffplay -i video.mkv -vf "drawtext=text='%{pts\:hms} (%{pts}) FrameNum=%{frame_num} FrameType=%{pict_type}':start_number=1:fontfile=/usr/share/fonts/dejavu/DejaVuSans.ttf:fontsize=60:fontcolor=white:box=1:boxcolor=black" ffplay version 6.1.2 Copyright (c) 2003-2024 the FFmpeg developers built with gcc 14 (GCC) configuration: --prefix=/usr --bindir=/usr/bin --datadir=/usr/share/ffmpeg --docdir=/usr/share/doc/ffmpeg --incdir=/usr/include/ffmpeg --libdir=/usr/lib64 --mandir=/usr/share/man --arch=x86_64 --optflags='-O2 -flto=auto -ffat-lto-objects -fexceptions -g -grecord-gcc-switches -pipe -Wall -Wno-complain-wrong-lang -Werror=format-security -Wp,-U_FORTIFY_SOURCE,-D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=3 -Wp,-D_GLIBCXX_ASSERTIONS -specs=/usr/lib/rpm/redhat/redhat-hardened-cc1 -fstack-protector-strong -specs=/usr/lib/rpm/redhat/redhat-annobin-cc1 -m64 -march=x86-64 -mtune=generic -fasynchronous-unwind-tables -fstack-clash-protection -fcf-protection -fno-omit-frame-pointer -mno-omit-leaf-frame-pointer' --extra-ldflags='-Wl,-z,relro -Wl,--as-needed -Wl,-z,pack-relative-relocs -Wl,-z,now -specs=/usr/lib/rpm/redhat/redhat-hardened-ld -specs=/usr/lib/rpm/redhat/redhat-annobin-cc1 -Wl,--build-id=sha1 ' --extra-cflags=' -I/usr/include/rav1e' --enable-libopencore-amrnb --enable-libopencore-amrwb --enable-libvo-amrwbenc --enable-version3 --enable-bzlib --enable-chromaprint --disable-crystalhd --enable-fontconfig --enable-frei0r --enable-gcrypt --enable-gnutls --enable-ladspa --enable-lcms2 --enable-libaom --enable-libdav1d --enable-libass --enable-libbluray --enable-libbs2b --enable-libcodec2 --enable-libcdio --enable-libdrm --enable-libjack --enable-libjxl --enable-libfreetype --enable-libfribidi --enable-libgsm --enable-libharfbuzz --enable-libilbc --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libmysofa --enable-nvenc --enable-openal --enable-opencl --enable-opengl --enable-libopenh264 --enable-libopenjpeg --enable-libopenmpt --enable-libopus --enable-libpulse --enable-libplacebo --enable-librsvg --enable-librav1e --enable-librubberband --enable-libsmbclient --enable-version3 --enable-libsnappy --enable-libsoxr --enable-libspeex --enable-libsrt --enable-libssh --enable-libsvtav1 --enable-libtesseract --enable-libtheora --enable-libtwolame --enable-libvorbis --enable-libv4l2 --enable-libvidstab --enable-libvmaf --enable-version3 --enable-vapoursynth --enable-libvpx --enable-vulkan --enable-libshaderc --enable-libwebp --enable-libx264 --enable-libx265 --enable-libxvid --enable-libxml2 --enable-libzimg --enable-libzmq --enable-libzvbi --enable-lv2 --enable-avfilter --enable-libmodplug --enable-postproc --enable-pthreads --disable-static --enable-shared --enable-gpl --disable-debug --disable-stripping --shlibdir=/usr/lib64 --enable-lto --enable-libvpl --enable-runtime-cpudetect libavutil 58. 29.100 / 58. 29.100 libavcodec 60. 31.102 / 60. 31.102 libavformat 60. 16.100 / 60. 16.100 libavdevice 60. 3.100 / 60. 3.100 libavfilter 9. 12.100 / 9. 12.100 libswscale 7. 5.100 / 7. 5.100 libswresample 4. 12.100 / 4. 12.100 libpostproc 57. 3.100 / 57. 3.100 Input #0, matroska,webm, from 'video.mkv': Metadata: ENCODER : Lavf60.16.100 Duration: 02:25:29.71, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 5116 kb/s Stream #0:0: Video: vp8, yuv420p(tv, bt709, progressive), 1920x1080, SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9, 30 fps, 30 tbr, 1k tbn Metadata: DURATION : 02:25:29.700000000 Stream #0:1: Audio: vorbis, 48000 Hz, stereo, fltp Metadata: DURATION : 02:25:29.712000000 3.17 A-V: -0.015 fd= 0 aq= 15KB vq= 683KB sq= 0B f=0/0 ^C

Regression on the select-filter in version 7.1 or 8.0 ?
by Thomas Ledoux 16 Sep '25

16 Sep '25

Hi, it seems that versions 7.1 and 8.0 of ffmpeg introduce a regression in the select filter. Indeed, in order to extract images from a video at specific times, I use the following command: ffmpeg -y -nostdin -ss 1 -i video.mov -vf "select='eq(pict_type\,I)+eq(pict_type\,P)'" -pix_fmt yuvj420p -an -frames:v 1 -q:v 3 -update 1 thumbs_0001.jpg This works well for MP4/H264 videos, but for MOV/ProRes videos (when the file is larger than 50GB) the command only works in version 7.0 and runs forever on version 7.1 or 8.0 Using ffprobe, I confirm that all the frames are of type pict_type=I ? So I could suppress the filter for MOV videos but then I will have multiple commands depending on the kind of videos. Below a run and log for version 7.0 and a run with version 8.0. Thanks in advance for any insight Thomas ====================================================================================== Run with ffmpeg7.0 : time $FFMPEG -y -nostdin -ss 1 -i xxx.mov -vf different zoom for horizontal and vertical axes
by astroelectronic＠t-online.de 15 Sep '25

15 Sep '25

Hi, I want to make a video effect where the zoom factor is changing with a sine function, like in this example: ffmpeg -i in.mov -lavfi zoompan=z='1.2+0.1*sin(3*time)':x='iw/2-(iw/zoom/2)':y='ih/2-(ih/zoom/2)' -t 10 -y out.mov But I want different functions for horizontal and vertical zoom. For example sin() for horizontal and cos() for vertical zoom. That's not possible with the zoompan filter. Which other filter can I use instead? Thanks, Michael

Video format curio/problem

Hi, I'm watching a serial. Those files are made at 3840 x 1604 pixels, and display badly on my old and small Lenovo Yoga laptop connected via HDMI cable to my sitting room TV set (the sound plays well, but the video is jumpy, it can stop for several seconds). I tested several conversions to an "easier on the cpu" files, and one of these worked: ffmpeg -t 10:0 -i movie.mkv \ -vf scale=960:802 -c:v mpeg4 -vtag xvid -qscale:v 3 -c:a copy -c:s copy -c:s copy \ 3b_movie.mkv You may notice that the scale is wrong. The original aspect ratio is 2.3940, while this has 1.1970, so when VLC plays it it has to change the displayed aspect ratio at runtime so that it displays correctly. So I corrected the command line: ffmpeg -t 10:0 -i movie.mkv \ -vf scale=-1:802 -c:v mpeg4 -vtag xvid -qscale:v 3 -c:a copy -c:s copy -c:s copy \ 3c_movie.mkv which produces a 1920 x 802 as the same aspect ratio as the original 2.3940. However, it displays badly (haltingly) on the laptop! Why? (note: TV set is 1920 x 1080) The files are local to the computer, the disk is M2. The second version is bigger: 221287201 3b_movie.mkv 323457154 3c_movie.mkv The first version plays at about 50% CPU on the two cores, while the second one plays (haltingly) at 100% and 20%, on vlc. And both versions play fine on kodi (40% cpu, both cores). Not so the original, plays haltingly, but different than VLC. Unrelated problem: only one of the two subtitles streams are copied. Here is the command I am using ffmpeg -y -f gdigrab -framerate 30 -i title="Search - Microsoft Bing - Google Chrome" -c:v libx264 -preset fast -crf 18 -pix_fmt yuv420p -movflags +faststart "test.mp4" -report -loglevel repeat+level+verbose I am recording the web browser on a windows 11 machine and this command was working a couple of weeks ago. Recording desktop works as iam able to see the recording just fine. I have disabled Graphics acceleration in Chrome but the recording is still black and I can see the coursor moving in the recoding but no image. I have attached the log. Please let me know what you all think
