'split'+'interleave' causes FFmpeg to use the wrong 'tbn'
by Mark Filipak 08 Sep '25

Attached: v.mkv (282 kB) FFmpeg version: ffmpeg-2025-09-04-git-2611874a50-full_build Howdy, Making an mp4, it appears that 'split'+'interleave' causes FFmpeg to use the input's 'tbn' (i.e. v.mkv's tbn). Seems like a bug to me. Unexpected: split.mp4' has 1000k tbn -- messes up a lot of things. ffmpeg -r 24000/1001 -i c:\work\v.mkv^ -filter_complex "[0:v:0]split=2[1][2],[1]select=eq(n\,0)[3],[2]select=not(eq(n\,0))[4],[3][4]interleave[v]"^ -map "[v]" -c libx264 c:\work\split.mp4 Result: Stream #0:0: Video: h264 ... 1000k tbn ^^^^^^^^^ As expected: !split.mp4 has 24k tbn -- exactly 24/1.001 FPS. ffmpeg -r 24000/1001 -i c:\work\v.mkv^ -map 0:v:0 -c libx264 c:\work\!split.mp4 Result: Stream #0:0(eng): Video: h264 ... 24k tbn (default) ^^^^^^^ This is part of a much larger, complicated process which I've thinned down to what you see. It's a show-stopper. Errors in 'showinfo' that may be significant
by Mark Filipak 08 Sep '25

08 Sep '25

BACKGROUND: "THE STING" [1973] DVD [2005] has a picture glitch that's fixed by using frame 2184 to replace the 5 frames that follow it. The 'easy' way to do that is via 'splits' and 'interleave'. Unfortunately, in 'splits' and 'interleave', FFmpeg changes timebases and PTSes and ruins things -- see "'split'+'interleave' causes FFmpeg to use the wrong 'tbn'", posted yesterday. As a result, I had to replace the 5 frames the long way around: by making separate, 1 frame files. MY ASSERTION: Note the five durations that are marked. I believe that investigating why 'showinfo' gets them wrong is a simpler task, but one that seems pretty strongly related to my previous post. That assertion is based on my experiences between yesterday and today -- it's been a hard slog. The TARGET is unformly 24/1.001 fps with a 24k tbn, now, but getting it there was not what anyone would call easy. I will keep all the files, scripts, and documentation for a few days in case anyone is interested in investigating -- feel free to contact me off-list if you prefer. I think this icicle may be the tip of an iceberg. I made 10 files: THE STING [1973].mp4 <= SOURCE (correct PTSes) THE STING [1973]v..91.091.mp4 <= time=0..91.091 (pts=0...) +------------------------------------------------------------+ ¦ THE STING [1973]v91.132.mp4 <= copy of 91.091 (pts=984) ¦ These are ¦ THE STING [1973]v91.174.mp4 <= copy of 91.091 (pts=1992) ¦ copies of ¦ THE STING [1973]v91.216.mp4 <= copy of 91.091 (pts=3000) ¦ 91.091 ¦ THE STING [1973]v91.257.mp4 <= copy of 91.091 (pts=3984) ¦ ¦ THE STING [1973]v91.299.mp4 <= copy of 91.091 (pts=4992) ¦ +------------------------------------------------------------+ THE STING [1973]v91.341...mp4 <= time=91.341..7736.812 (pts=123120...) Problem with deshake_opencl filter
by Matthias Welwarsky 06 Sep '25

06 Sep '25

Hi, I'm trying my luck with a gpu-only chain for stabilizing a video with deshake_opencl. Sounds easy enough right? This is the command line I'm using: ffmpeg -init_hw_device vaapi=va:/dev/dri/renderD128 \ -init_hw_device opencl=oc@va \ -filter_hw_device oc \ -vaapi_device /dev/dri/renderD128 \ -hwaccel vaapi -hwaccel_output_format vaapi \ -i test.mp4 \ -vf "hwmap=derive_device=opencl,deshake_opencl,hwmap=derive_device=vaapi:reverse=1" \ -c:a copy -c:v h264_vaapi -y test_deshake.mp4 The filter chain is assembled without problem so it seems to be valid, but when it starts I get the following runtime error: [out#0/mp4 @ 0x20ddbd00] Starting thread... [hwmap @ 0x7ff69c003280] Filter input: vaapi, 1920x1080 (512). [AVHWFramesContext @ 0x7ff6980ab800] Map surface 0x2. [AVHWFramesContext @ 0x7ff6980ab800] Map QSV/VAAPI surface 0x2 to OpenCL. Are there any additional tricks I could try? Regards, Matthias

Optimizing FFmpeg performance without huge pages - seeking advice
by Bazinga Tofu 05 Sep '25

05 Sep '25

Subject: Optimizing FFmpeg performance without huge pages - seeking advice Hello FFmpeg community, I am seeking advice on optimizing FFmpeg performance while explicitly avoiding the use of huge pages/transparent huge pages. **Environment:** - FFmpeg version: 4.1.11 - System: Linux with transparent huge pages currently set to [madvise] - Goal: Disable huge pages entirely and optimize for standard 4K pages **Background:** For our specific use case, we prefer to avoid huge pages due to concerns about memory fragmentation and allocation latency. We want to configure our system to use only standard 4K pages but maintain optimal FFmpeg performance. **Questions:** 1. Are there specific FFmpeg build-time or runtime configuration options that work better with standard page sizes? 2. Should we adjust any specific FFmpeg options like: - Thread count (-threads) - Buffer sizes - Memory pool settings Or any other parameters that might compensate for the lack of huge pages? 3. Have there been any benchmarks comparing FFmpeg performance with huge pages disabled vs enabled? **Current approach:** We plan to set /sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage/enabled to "never" and are looking for FFmpeg-specific optimizations to maintain good performance with this configuration. Any recommendations for optimizing FFmpeg in a standard page environment would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and expertise. Best regards, Zijian Zhu

Increased size of files recoded with av1 in the latest version
by felix.quintgz＠yahoo.com 05 Sep '25

I have updated the version of ffmpeg that I have from 2023-11-15-git-78f55457c9-full_build-www.gyan.dev to ffmpeg version N-120957-g66e40840d1-20250903 and now the same files encoded with the same parameters are larger. The conversion speed of my test file has increased significantly, dropping from 7:38 minutes to 1:20 in the latest version for the same parameters, but the final file size has increased. I have tried with several files and the same thing happens in all of them. This is the line I use for the conversion, the parameters are set for a minimum VMAF of 96. ffmpeg.exe -i "origen.mp4" -c:a copy -c:v libsvtav1 -crf 32 -preset 6 -svtav1-params tune=1:fast-decode=1 -pix_fmt yuv420p10le -g 240 "destino.mp4" I have a small test file encoded with H.264, 35.7 MB in size. When re-encoded with the old version, it's 25.2 MB, and with the new version, it's 28.9 MB. It may not seem like much, but with larger files, the difference is noticeable. What could be happening? Have the parameters changed?

39.39 colorspace Convert colorspace, transfer characteristics or color primaries. Input video needs to have an even size. The filter accepts the following options: all Specify all color properties at once. The accepted values are: ‘bt470m’ ‘bt470bg’ ‘bt601-6-525’ <--+ ‘bt601-6-625’ ¦ are these ‘bt709’ ¦ the same thing? ‘smpte170m’ <--+ ‘smpte240m’ ‘bt2020’

video capture example code
by Stefan Oltmanns 04 Sep '25

04 Sep '25

Hi, I was looking for some minimal example code to capture video with libavdevice. What I would like to do is (for v4l2, avfoundation and dshow): -Get a list of available capture devices -Get a list of supported formats/resolutions for a capture device -Capture from a device with a specific format/resolution and get the data (raw uncompressed without any processing, just like it came from the device, if possible with a callback for each frame) Does somebody know some example code for that? All I found is decades old and won't compile with recent ffmpeg. Best regards Stefan

BT601
by Mark Filipak 04 Sep '25

04 Sep '25

Is the following 100% correct? PAL colors are called "BT601-625". For PAL DVDs for which showinfo shows color_space:unknown color_primaries:unknown color_trc:unknown the source's color attributes should be forced by -colorspace bt470bg -color_primaries bt470bg -color_trc gamma28 NTSC colors are called "BT601-525". For NTSC DVDs for which showinfo shows color_space:unknown color_primaries:unknown color_trc:unknown the source's color attributes should be forced by -colorspace smpte170m -color_primaries smpte170m -color_trc smpte170m For both BT601-625 and BT601-525 sources, BT709 targets can be set in filter_complex by colormatrix=src=bt601:dst=bt709,colorspace=all=bt709 Specifically, smpte170m, as shown in colormatrix colormatrix=src=smpte170m:dst=bt709 is not used. Thanks -- Mark.

ffplay on imac with a usb capture card source
by fanofyes＠gmail.com 03 Sep '25

Hello All! My setup is an Mac running Sonoma 14.7, intel based with an AMD GPU card (AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4 GB). I want to display on my screen the content of a USB video capure card using the hardware capabilities of the GPU. It's my one of using my Mac screen as a second screen for my windows laptop. It worked great when I had linux on the Mac. [ffplay -f video4linux2 -framerate 50 -loglevel -8 -video_size 1920x1080 -x 3840 -y 2160 /dev/video0] I switched back to MacOS. I got it to work compiling the most recent version of ffmpeg but it gobles up CPU (like 20%) instead of the 5% on linux. ffplay -f avfoundation -framerate 50 -loglevel -8 -video_size 1920x1080 -x 3840 -y 2160 -i "0" & If I attempt to use hardware acceleration then I get getting error [pl_map_avframe_ex failed] with a blank screen. Can anybody help me? ffplay -hwaccel vulkan -f avfoundation -framerate 50 -video_size 1920x1080 -x 3840 -y 2160 -i "0" & [1] 67503 xxx@Thierrys-iMac ~ % ffplay version N-120843-g10a061ba99 Copyright (c) 2003-2025 the FFmpeg developers built with Apple clang version 16.0.0 (clang-1600.0.26.6) configuration: --enable-gpl --enable-version3 --enable-nonfree --enable-libplacebo --enable-vulkan --enable-libx264 --enable-libx265 --enable-libmp3lame --enable-shared --disable-stripping --pkg-config-flags=--static libavutil 60. 10.100 / 60. 10.100 libavcodec 62. 13.101 / 62. 13.101 libavformat 62. 4.101 / 62. 4.101 libavdevice 62. 2.100 / 62. 2.100 libavfilter 11. 5.100 / 11. 5.100 libswscale 9. 2.100 / 9. 2.100 libswresample 6. 2.100 / 6. 2.100 Enable vulkan renderer to support hwaccel vulkan [Vulkan Renderer @ 0x7f9c5e007140] Initialized libplacebo v7.351.0 (API v351) [Vulkan @ 0x7f9c5e014a40] device extension "VK_KHR_external_memory_fd" not found, excluding.
