I have been using ffmpeg for a while to re-encode video files I have received into xvid/mp3 for an old Sony DVD player I have. I have recently tried to convert some files for which ffmpeg generates tens of thousands of errors, e.g.: + ffmpeg -i /tmp/Endeavour.s02e01.Trove.mp4 -y -vcodec libxvid -acodec libmp3lame -ab 128 -ac 2 avi/.mp4.avi ffmpeg version 2.2.3 Copyright (c) 2000-2014 the FFmpeg developers built on Jun 11 2014 09:17:30 with gcc 4.2.1 (GCC) 20070719 [FeeBSD] configuration: --prefix=/home/noel --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libx264 --enable-gpl -- nable-libxvid libavutil 52. 66.100 / 52. 66.100 libavcodec 55. 52.102 / 55. 52.102 libavformat 55. 33.100 / 55. 33.100 libavdevice 55. 10.100 / 55. 10.100 libavfilter 4. 2.100 / 4. 2.100 libswscale 2. 5.102 / 2. 5.102 libswresample 0. 18.100 / 0. 18.100 libpostproc 52. 3.100 / 52. 3.100 Input #0, mov,mp4,m4a,3gp,3g2,mj2, from '/tmp/Endeavour.s02e01.Trove.mp4': Metadata: major_brand : isom minor_version : 1 compatible_brands: isomavc1 creation_time : 2014-03-29 22:05:56 Duration: 01:29:41.72, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 799 kb/s Stream #0:0(und): Video: h264 (High) (avc1 / 0x31637661), yuv420p(tv, bt709), 720x404 680 kb/s, 25 fps, 25 tbr, 25k tbn, 50 tbc (default) Metadata: creation_time : 2014-03-29 22:05:56 handler_name : Video Stream #0:1(und): Audio: aac (mp4a / 0x6134706D), 48000 Hz, stereo, fltp, 114 kb/s (d fault) Metadata: creation_time : 2014-03-29 22:06:01 handler_name : GPAC ISO Audio Handler Output #0, avi, to 'avi/.mp4.avi': Metadata: major_brand : isom minor_version : 1 compatible_brands: isomavc1 ISFT : Lavf55.33.100 Stream #0:0(und): Video: mpeg4 (libxvid) (xvid / 0x64697678), yuv420p, 720x404, q=2-3 , 200 kb/s, 25 tbn, 25 tbc (default) Metadata: creation_time : 2014-03-29 22:05:56 handler_name : Video Stream #0:1(und): Audio: mp3 (libmp3lame) (U[0][0][0] / 0x0055), 48000 Hz, stereo, fl p, 128 kb/s (default) Metadata: creation_time : 2014-03-29 22:06:01 handler_name : GPAC ISO Audio Handler Stream mapping: Stream #0:0 -> #0:0 (h264 -> libxvid) Stream #0:1 -> #0:1 (aac -> libmp3lame) Press [q] to stop, [?] for help [h264 @ 0x2a34bc00] Cannot use next picture in error concealment [h264 @ 0x2a34b800] concealing 999 DC, 999 AC, 999 MV errors in B frame [h264 @ 0x2a34bc00] concealing 990 DC, 990 AC, 990 MV errors in P frame [h264 @ 0x2a34c000] Reference 2 >= 2 [h264 @ 0x2a34c000] error while decoding MB 0 0, bytestream 2078 [h264 @ 0x2a34c000] concealing 1170 DC, 1170 AC, 1170 MV errors in B frame [h264 @ 0x2a34bc00] Reference 2 >= 2 [h264 @ 0x2a34bc00] error while decoding MB 1 1, bytestream 1871 [h264 @ 0x2a34bc00] concealing 1170 DC, 1170 AC, 1170 MV errors in B frame [h264 @ 0x2a34b800] Reference 4 >= 4 [h264 @ 0x2a34b800] error while decoding MB 2 0, bytestream 21845 [h264 @ 0x2a34b800] concealing 1170 DC, 1170 AC, 1170 MV errors in P frame ... The resulting video file is so corrupt it is unusable. I have tried ffmeg's in-built h264 -> mpeg4 with no difference although I have no real idea where these errors are coming from. I am running ffmpeg on FreeBSD, and have just recompiled the latest which you can see above. I resorted to using xvid4psp on a pc and that seemed to be able to deal with these files but I want to avoid using a pc if possible. Would anyone have any idea as to the source of these errors? --enable-gpl -- nable-libxvid So you're already building by hand, good. What version/architecture of FreeBSD are you using? Before 10, I had good results building with lang/gcc46 and devel/binutils, for better asm support. After 10, I get good results either with gcc46 (or gcc47) or clang. Pass -cc and --as to configure to use alternate compiler/binutils. Cheers Tom
I realized the errors were in the decoding but I thought maybe there were interesting types of packets in the stream that ffmpeg couldn't handle. I never imagined it might be compiler related. I am rebuilding ffmpeg now with --cc=gcc46 --as=gcc46. My freebsd installation is rather old now, % uname -a FreeBSD beatrice 8.2-RELEASE FreeBSD 8.2-RELEASE #0: Fri Feb 18 02:24:46 UTC 2011 root@almeida.cse.buffalo.edu:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC i386 I must have build gcc46 in the past from ports; I couldn't now since when I ran portsnap recently the ports system got trashed because they are now using bmake instead of make; all the config files don't work with make...I am planning to install 10 in fact soon. Anyway, I'll see how this build goes. Many thanks. Noel Hunt On Thu, Jun 12, 2014 at 11:52 PM, Tom Evans <tevans.uk@googlemail.com> wrote:

The recompile fixed the errors, so many thanks to Tom Evans. My apologies to Carl Hoyos for wasting his time with what turned out to be a problem with the compilation of ffmpeg. Noel Hunt On Fri, Jun 13, 2014 at 8:14 AM, Noel Hunt <noel.hunt@gmail.com> wrote:

It will be gcc 4.2.1, IE the last GPL2 version available. This is from a FreeBSD 8.4 box that I'm sure would exhibit the same problem: Using built-in specs. Target: i386-undermydesk-freebsd Configured with: FreeBSD/i386 system compiler Thread model: posix gcc version 4.2.1 20070719 [FreeBSD] clang, or a more recent gcc from a package, work fine. Cheers Tom
The compiler is indeed as Tom Evans points out, 4.2.1: % gcc -v Using built-in specs. Target: i386-undermydesk-freebsd Configured with: FreeBSD/i386 system compiler Thread model: posix gcc version 4.2.1 20070719 [FreeBSD] On Fri, Jun 13, 2014 at 9:18 PM, Carl Eugen Hoyos <cehoyos@ag.or.at> wrote:
