Hi all, mencoder and mplayer can take their input from a url, rather than a local file. I would like to be able to encode (actually just cut) .wav audio files accessed via a url. This is not possible with mencoder (-novideo is just there to tease). So far as I can see, ffmpeg does not have this functionality either, right? Does anyone know of any other linux software that can do this? Otherwise I may be reduced to wget --output-document=- myurl | ffmpeg -ss <> -t<> out.wav which is not terribly efficient for getting chunks from near the end of large files. regards, Colin

Cool. I think I just had a broken url before. Is this neat feature documented? thanks, Colin

Yes but incorrectly: "The protocol http: is currently used only to communicate with FFserver (see the FFserver documentation). When FFmpeg will be a video player it will also be used for streaming :-)" http: seems to work for many media files that are on the web. But I am not sure *in general*, which is why I dont propose a doc patch.
thanks, Colin

Well, it worked every time I tried. But given what there is in the doc, I was afraid there were known cases where it fails. -- Michel Bardiaux R&D Director T +32 [0] 2 790 29 41 F +32 [0] 2 790 29 02 E mailto:mbardiaux at mediaxim.be Mediaxim NV/SA Vorstlaan 191 Boulevard du Souverain Brussel 1160 Bruxelles http://www.mediaxim.com/
