Good afternoon, I'm having some difficultly in trying to get the latest (today's) svn build compiling on a new 64bit server of mine. I think i have narrowed the problem to the --enable-shared option which I have heard has troubles with 64 bit architecture. I have configured and installed ffmpeg a handful of times both success stories and complete failures. In short I am trying to get mp3 encoding working on the 64 bit machine; while it works in the 32 bit platform the only difference is the --enable-shared option along with a few others that I don't think are needed (enable-pthreads, enable-pp, etc). ffmpeg -formats | grep mp3 FFmpeg version SVN-r10214, Copyright (c) 2000-2007 Fabrice Bellard, et al. configuration: --enable-gpl --enable-pp --enable-pthreads --enable-libogg --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libxvid --enable-libx264 libavutil version: 49.5.0 libavcodec version: 51.42.0 libavformat version: 51.12.2 built on Aug 24 2007 17:35:23, gcc: 4.1.2 20070626 (Red Hat 4.1.2-13) DE mp3 MPEG audio layer 3 EA libmp3lame D A mp3 D A mp3adu D A mp3on4 The error I am getting from making the build is in mathematics.o and it is: /usr/bin/ld: mathematics.o: relocation R_X86_64_32 against `a local symbol' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC mathematics.o: could not read symbols: Bad value collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make[1]: *** [libavutil.so.49] Error 1 Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated. First time posting to the mailing list but I've been reading it for quite some time...hopefully I'm not continuing a dead topic. Thanks in advance, Justin

i tried exactly what you want on my machine: $ make distclean $ ./configure --enable-gpl --enable-pp --enable-pthreads --enable-libogg --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libxvid --enable-libx264 --enable-shared $ make $ ffmpeg -i FFmpeg version SVN-r10255, Copyright (c) 2000-2007 Fabrice Bellard, et al. configuration: --enable-gpl --enable-pp --enable-pthreads --enable-libogg --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libxvid --enable-libx264 --enable-shared libavutil version: 49.5.0 libavcodec version: 51.42.0 libavformat version: 51.12.2 built on Aug 28 2007 09:07:16, gcc: 3.4.6 (Gentoo 3.4.6-r1, ssp-3.4.5-1.0, pie-8.7.9) ffmpeg: missing argument for option '-i' $ uname -mpi i686 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+ AuthenticAMD
ffmpeg -formats | grep mp3 FFmpeg version SVN-r10214, Copyright (c) 2000-2007 Fabrice Bellard, et al. configuration: --enable-gpl --enable-pp --enable-pthreads --enable-libogg --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libxvid --enable-libx264 libavutil version: 49.5.0 libavcodec version: 51.42.0 libavformat version: 51.12.2 built on Aug 24 2007 17:35:23, gcc: 4.1.2 20070626 (Red Hat 4.1.2-13) DE mp3 MPEG audio layer 3 EA libmp3lame D A mp3 D A mp3adu D A mp3on4
The error I am getting from making the build is in mathematics.o and it is:
/usr/bin/ld: mathematics.o: relocation R_X86_64_32 against `a local symbol' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile with -fPIC mathematics.o: could not read symbols: Bad value collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make[1]: *** [libavutil.so.49] Error 1
