I have three input files, I would like to paste together in the output:
start.avi mid.wmv end.avi
They have different framerates and sizes etc, but in the end they should be one file with one size and one framerate. The output parameters is no problem for me, just the multible input I can't get to work.
You cant do it in one command, you have to convert them first *individually* to a common encoding that supports concatenation. You did not specify which one, so I will assume DVD-compatible. Try something like:
ffmpeg -i start.avi -target pal-dvd start.mpg ffmpeg -i mid.wmv -target pal-dvd mid.mpg ffmpeg -i end.avi -target pal-dvd end.mpg cat start.mpg mid.mpg end.mpg | ffmpeg -i - -acodec copy -vcodec copy whole.mpg
You could also re-encode them all to compatible avi's and use avijoin (in package transcode IIRC)
Hi Michel, thx for your help! avijoin is a program, not an option of ffmpeg, right? I would like to have a solution without having to install another program. It's not about DVD here, I want to encode them into WMV at the end of the day; with a small framesize (320x240) but a high-bitrate and good sound. So I don't want to use "-target pal-dvd", because that would mean I would have to change the frame-size twice (lots of quality loss, right?) What is the best way to not loose too much quality, while transcoding them? My best guess is to encode them all in a highquality MPEG with already the exact framesize like the end-format (320x240). What is good for a temporary MPGE-format, to not loose too much quality? (MPEG2? Audiocodec?) is this OK: ffmpeg -i start.avi -s 320x240 -b 1200k -vcodec MPEG-2 -ilme -acodec mp3 -ab 128 -ar 44100 -y start.mpeg ?? Thanks a lot! Right.

The emphasis in the ffmpeg project is on the codec and container libraries, rather than on the command line application. Ergo, for lots of things external stuff is needed, or at least more convenient.

You didnt say so, so I assumed DVD. -target pal-dvd acts basically as a shorthand for a lot of encoding parameters, nothing more. Oh, and IIRC ffmpeg *wont* encode to wmv3.
So I don't want to use "-target pal-dvd", because that would mean I would have to change the frame-size twice (lots of quality loss, right?) 1200k is rather a low bitrate, its the one used in VCD! So I would say, -b 6000000 -vcodec mpeg2 -ab 128000
Thanks a lot!
