Hi, would it be possible to allow expressions for the yaw, pitch and roll parameters in the v360 filter? I have a project where I need these angles to be a function of time. Michael

Nope, would make filter 10x times slower.

ok, no problem, I have just found a workaround: Use v360 to tilt the video so that the rotation axis is up, make equirectangular output, then use horizontal scroll filter to apply the desired rotation speed, then use v360 again to convert equirectangular input to the desired output format. Michael

Would it always slow down the filter, or only if these expressions are actually a function of time? Some nice effects would be possible when the angles and/or field of view could be functions of time. A "eval" option (like in "eq" filter) could be added to specify when to evaluate the expressions, and the default would be "init" for fast processing. Michael

Eval is evil. It is not gonna be added.

I have tested it and it works to send constant values to the v360 filter, but it doesn't work to send an expression, as in the 3rd line of this *.cmd file. With overlay filter this method works fine. 0.00-1.00 v360 yaw 0; 1.00-2.00 v360 yaw 60; 2.00-4.00 v360 yaw 'lerp(60,120,t-2)'; I understand it doesn't work because v360 doesn't accept expressions. Would it be possible to evaluate the expression already in sendcmd, and then send the result to the target filter? A workaround would be to write many lines in the *.cmd file, one line for each frame. Michael

I told you already that expressions are evil, slow, limited and ugly. Use mpv player, which have support to send commands via keybindings, you could even write lua plugin(s).

Evil and ugly? That's no problem for me :-) I need expressions for some special effects and don't care about processing speed. Regarding "limited" I have the opposite opinion. It's a limitation not to have expressions.

Is there a list / faq / sample of using ffmpeg for real world vr360 stream editing / processing? I often have to use ffmpeg to flip vr codecs from sone nonstandard camera codec to and editor friendly codec. It would be great if other typical video feature with extension for br (wrapping of frame etc) existed and had sone documentation or module names to investigate at least. Ideally supporting 10 bit h265 and in an ideal world one of the open source 360 audio formats Sent from my iPhone

As far as I know, there are only two sources for v360 documentation: 1. The official documentation https://www.ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg-all.html#v360 2. There are some examples in my book: http://www.astro-electronic.de/FFmpeg_Book.pdf If anybody knows additional sources, please let me know. There are also many helpful informations (but not ffmpeg related) on Paul Bourke's website: www.paulbourke.net/dome/ --> Paul totally understood, I know that you are doing this in your free time, and we all have the same problem that money must come from somewhere. Use of ffmpeg is free, but development & support doesn't have to be. Is there some way I can fund development? Is there some way I can fund support? Perhaps as a subscription? (And, Yes, I'm aware of the "Donate" options.) I don't want to be anonymous. Warm Regards, Mark.

PayPal is listed on the Donate page and allows you to make a monthly donation, but we don't have a Patreon type of subscription model. One method to fund development is to sponsor development in areas of your interest, or put a bounty for a particular bug fix or feature request. It might be a little more interesting for you than the typical donate options. It's fairly informal since there is no standard or official process to do this. For example, find a ticket on the bug tracker and leave a comment to offer to pay x amount to get it fixed/implemented. Or hang out in #ffmpeg-devel IRC and ask there (not all developers participate in IRC, however). Or contact a developer on the consulting page: https://www.ffmpeg.org/consulting.html There is also bountysource, but I have no experience with it and IIRC they take a 10% cut. https://www.bountysource.com/teams/ffmpeg/issues

Hi Lou, I joined PayPal and had bad experiences regarding shocking charges to recipients, so I don't use PayPal. To my knowledge, Patreon contributions are anonymous. Patreon's web page solely contains pitches to content creators with no details for contributors and no FAQ. I would think that Liberapay would be ideal for ffmpeg. I've sent an email to Liberpay requesting their contributor-disclosure policies. I want acknowledgement. I don't want anonymity.

My area of interest is documentation. Currently, ffmpeg is documented by the developers and, no offense intended, their documentation is poor. Why wouldn't it be poor? Developers are not professional writers and their perspective is not the users' perspective.
-snip-
It's fairly informal since there is no standard or official process to do this.
The ffmpeg crew needs to think about it. It's important.

The founder of Liberapay contacted me. "Donations are always anonymous on Liberapay." Oh, well.

Donation of your time is more appreciated than funds. Have you considered submitting a patch to improve documentation? As an added bonus your name will be associated with the contribution within the source code. If that does not interest you then improving the wiki could be a good start. It is intended to supplement the documentation and is publicly editable. https://trac.ffmpeg.org/#CommunityContributedDocumentation For example the AV1 article is outdated and can be updated with the addition of the encoder librav1e.
It's fairly informal since there is no standard or official process to do this.
The ffmpeg crew needs to think about it. It's important.
I don't disagree, but money is not the motivating factor for FFmpeg development (or at least it isn't for me despite my finances), so nobody has invested the time and energy to better organize sponsorship and bounties. What I would like to see is the project use its funds to pay developers, but that's a different discussion.

Donation of your time is more appreciated than funds. Have you considered submitting a patch to improve documentation? As an added bonus your name will be associated with the contribution within the source code.
While I agree 100 % (nodding my head all the way), I suppose there are people who have wishes, but cannot contribute themselves (English or skills too bad for documentation, no sense for testing and debugging, ...).
If that does not interest you then improving the wiki could be a good start. It is intended to supplement the documentation and is publicly editable.
Oh yes, I second this. The wiki is perfect for extra explanation, examples, and so forth! (I haven't actually contributed yet, shame on me.)

Bounties are one thing. Yet I have had multiple encounters of wishes to donate. I have always recommended the donation page, hoping it actually provides useful funds for e.g. travelling (and drinks ;-)), test hardware, whatever. Just wondering: I there any public tracking of how funds are used?

Interesting! Thanks and cheers, Moritz

I would like to donate documentation work, but there's issues: 1, though I'm working diligently to learn ffmpeg, I don't know ffmpeg that well because the documentation shortcomings that I want to fix are the very shortcomings that hold me back, 2, I fear that asking questions here will aggravate folks, and 3, I suggest that if I pay for documentation as a project, then perhaps I can get guidance without resentment. I think that there's some sort of documentation thing on git, but git is for Martians. I'm not a Martian. I don't know how to proceed.
