Is their a Windows codec available? I want to play Indeo video 3 files, which FFPlay can do but I want to play it through 'Video for Windows"(Windows NT/10 version). That way I can run an old piece of multimedia software. -- -Jamie Marchant

Not possible.

VFW works on windows 10?
VFW works on windows 10?
Yes, it does. However, FFmpeg does not install any system codecs. You could install IV50 that was delivered for free with the Intel Play microscope in ancient times and thus can still be found for free on the Internet (though hard to find). The codec was later bought by Ligos. There are some security issues with this codec, though. As an alternative, you may use the FFmpegSource2 (or the DirectShow) input filter with AVIsynth, if you software can be fed by the frame server. Wolfgang Hugemann
I found another project that allows me to enable the IV50 codec that comes with WIndows 10. On Fri, Sep 20, 2019 at 2:55 AM Wolfgang Hugemann <auto@hugemann.de> wrote:

So are you all set? I’m just really confused right now, my chain of thought was that if you have VfW, then that includes the system codecs for Intel video IV3x IV4x IV50… and it would just work. I thought IV50 didn’t include the older versions of the codec
Yes, I am all set.
From what I have read installing IV5 gets you the others as well but as I say Windows comes with them all disabled. I don’t remember the last time I used them and I would not have too but I was playing with ”winevdm” which lets you run Windows 16-bit programs on 64-bit Windows. It implements a wrapper from the 16-bit Video For Windows to the 32-bit one.(that’s what the devs told me, so yes, Video For Windows is still around).

Well, you didn't say that. But you are right, as I have just tested with an Indeo 5.0 coded video: regsrv_32 ir50_32.dll lets you play Indeo 5.0 coded videos with VfW, no installation needed. For security reasons, you should possibly unregister that codec after use: regvsrv_32 /u ir50_32.dll So far, I didn't know that it is that easy. The link to FFmpeg is that I often check the processing chain with AVIsynth scripting, before I settle on a permanent solution with FFmpeg. Wolfgang Hugemann
