coding video for some old Sony
Hi, i have an old Sony Bravia which accepts only MPEG4 as video and MP3 as audio. If i want to watch videos i do it with this command: ffmpeg -i the_kingdom_of_dreams_and_madness.mp4 -b:v 1M -vcodec mpeg4 -vtag xvid -acodec libmp3lame -q:a 2 the_kingdom_of_dreams_and_madness.avi but for some reason some video do not play at all. some do. is there a way that the input video could influence the output? I thought that when i resample with ffmpeg to these basic codecs all will work... Any hints? E

That's converting an mp4 to an avi, '-i' identifies the input. Start by swapping in and out file types, you can then remove the codecs since mpeg4 and matching audio are assumed from the file type. That said, the Bravia may be more sensitive to encodings than a simple "needs mpeg4". In the future, please post the full/un-cut command output and do not top-post the reply. Later, z!
well how do i do the define a more refined codec than mpeg4? and why does it play with this sometime and sometimes not. the command is uncut except the -i <filename>. On Thu, 8 Aug 2019 at 21:13, Carl Zwanzig <cpz@tuunq.com> wrote:

Maybe frame size and bitrate? Post the complete console output of an instance where the file worked ok your TV and one instance where it didn't. Best, Kieran
Any hints?

sorry for mixing this up. it should be: playing fine: Disenchantment.S01E01.720p.WEB-DL.x264.avi Monty_Python_s_The_Meaning_Of_Life not playing fine: catch22 eels life of Brian i have checked the output myself but can not see any reason why the 3 should not play fine on the TV. after some interweb reasearch i found some posts about Sony blocking watermarked videos on their products. it might be the case here. but that would be beyond the ffmpeg topic i guess. ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Erik Dobák <erik.dobak@gmail.com> Date: Fri, 9 Aug 2019 at 23:04 Subject: Re: If you don't care about top-posting, it is easy to do it wrong with the Gmail web gui. Once you typed "top-posting" into the search bar of your mail browser, you get both an English and (at least with a German default) a local language explanation for what it is. Then it cannot be so difficult to press the only symbol in Gmail's reply field. I don't know about the web, but it is certainly true on the Android gmail app. The quoted material is hidden beneath three dots. Tapping on them they can be expanded or deleted entirely. There may be other mail clients that also hide them from view.

You won't find one, google considers this a positive "feature". Most real email clients, such as Thunderbird/Evolution/kmail, will work with google by using imap. IMHO much better than the web interface. Later, z!

And given that this is an English-language list, where there is confusion the terms ought to be interpreted in English. Yes, it appears that English isn't the native language of many readers, and it's natural to research in that language and then translate the concepts. Sometimes that works. I'm not sure why "top-posting" is a tough concept for many people, "put your reply below what you're replying to" should be fairly clear. AFAICT bottom posting* is easy in most email clients if you want to, including the gmail web UI and the android email UI (but there are much better email clients for android). *which does -not-, and never has AFAIK mean including the entire message being replied to- at least remove all the footers. <sarcasm>Reindl is being polite and helpful as usual.....</sarcasm> I've been on the 'net for over 30 years and I've never heard "top posting means putting a new question over an old one", but it's a bad idea anyway. That does not make the mail significantly more readable.
It appears that this is a resolution or aspect ratio issue, feel free to post the command lines including complete, uncut console output of current FFmpeg git head with different resolutions.
As said, global motion compensation may also be relevant.
i have checked the output myself but can not see any reason why the 3 should not play fine on the TV. after some interweb reasearch i found some posts about Sony blocking watermarked videos on their products. it might be the case here. but that would be beyond the ffmpeg topic i guess.
This is very, very unlikely, even more so for re-encoded videos.
Please find out what top-posting means and avoid it here.

i will investigate now the ratio as possible cause of my pirated content playback problem. will let you know the outcome in a few days. thank you. E

I (still) can't imagine that solving your problem is hard. But as long as we don't see the actual transcoding command line(s) you tested with current FFmpeg together with their complete, uncut console output and the explanation if they worked or not, I wonder if anybody will really feel the will to suggest possible solutions. I (still) doubt very much that there is some content-magic behind your problems. Sorry, Carl Eugen

ok here i can report some sort of success: i created these 3 videos according to your hints: catch22bv1200.avi catch22bv1200.mp4 catch22bv816.mp4 the mp4 play fine the video (no sound but i can care about this later) but the catch22bv1200.avi does not play at all despite the fact that i just changed the extension of the output file in the command you have sent me. i am not sure why. for some reason other avis play fine at this TV. (also the input for the command was avi). i will try to experiment next days. if you have any ideas about what could be the cause please let me know. E

E ps: if you need the complete terminal output let me know i will run it again...

(still no audio)
i reduced the ffmpeg options to reduce complexity of this troubleshooting. you can see that only the change of container avi -> mp4 makes it start to work correctly. not sure why as the TV played .avi before. just in this (and maybe few other cases it does not work).
could it be something inside the original avi container what got into the second avi that could disturb the TV player?
also take a look at the frame count: mp4 175025 avi 175026
i thought the encoding is the same as: -b:v 1M -vcodec libxvid is used for both avi and mp4. still avi has one extra frame....
is it a bug? sorry that i ask i am no expert in this area...

ps: if you need the complete terminal output let me know i will run it again...
i did now convert from the mp4 (playing video but no sound) to -copy audio/video to .avi again 'no playback' for some reason that video stream won't play as .avi but plays as .mp4 regarding audio it might be that the crap sony had problems with .mp4 and that is why i used .avi all the time lately... 80% of the videos where the conversion is described in the latest command play fine. E ps: is there an AVI headers or metadata viewer?

i have checked the output myself but can not see any reason why the 3 should not play fine on the TV. after some interweb reasearch i found some posts about Sony blocking watermarked videos on their products. it might be the case here. but that would be beyond the ffmpeg topic i guess.
I can imagine, that there is a chance to alienate the watermark by rescaling the video or other filtering. -Ulf

"Real" watermarking should be resistent to this, upto the point that you need to "ruin" the video (or audio, for that matter) to get rid of it. OTOH, I agree that it is unlikely that a "quite" old TV set implements this. I even doubt that you find any consumer hardware which refuses to play this. AFAIU the watermark is for detecting piracy, not preventing it (but I may be totally wrong!). Moritz

Off topic: I always wondered how "real watermarking" is able to survive even lossy compression, but is still invisible. Wouldn't this mean that the lossy compression is not good enough? A compressor should be able to eliminate the invisible artifacts for more compression gain, shouldn't it?

Interesting point. You'll actually have to dive into the research papers on the net. Obviously, those companies using watermarking have put some thought and money into this. ;-) I guess basically you find the weaknesses of the known algorithms/encoders and circumvent their strength. For example I quickly found a paper concentrating on "surviving" JPEG compression, summarizing "The result shown [sic!?] that the embedded watermark is robust to JPEG compression up to image quality 60 (~91% compressed)." Obviously, this is still/single image and not motion video in this case, but you get the point. In streams with a timescale (i.e. audio and video), you can probably do stuff like e.g. a modulated wobble in volume or brightness, which may be something the compression algorithms don't consider to "optimize" away. OTOH, you can probably craft an encoder which is specifically able to remove such watermark effects, if it knows about them. A lot of waste of engineering energy, better invested into e.g. better security or saving the planet, if you ask me. ;-) Cheers, Moritz

Maybe on the first glance. However, if the watermarkers find a way to subvert the lossy compressor then this points the compression developers to new compression opportunities.
