I tend towards using 'they' and appropriate variants, leaving the
context to distinguish whether I'm referring to one person or more
than one person. However, 'he/she' seems much more common here in the
UK, I just hold the opinion that 'they' is a more polite usage,
possibly because hermaphrodites are taken into account and not
classified as 'it' or 'he/she' which may well be offensive to them.
I'm sure TheWanderer could clear this up. :)

I've never heard of using 'she' when the gender of any person whom
you're referring to is unknown or unbound but I'm not particularly
knowledgeable in this area, I merely know how I use the language
myself and how I've been taught to use it. I wouldn't consider this
usage non-discriminatory as I think it is clearly a form positive
discrimination which, from my perspective, is just as bad. However,
I'm not sure if this is a debate necessary for an FFMpeg
development/CVS mailing list. :D

PS - The grasp of English grammar that some of you hold is greatly
superior to mine and I know I often make mistakes through complacency
and colloquialisms. I respect very much that many of you, as
non-native English writers, make such an effort to use the language
perfectly and I thank you for this. It encourages me to improve. :)
