And how should I interpret that?

AFAIK you're supposed to copy the ffmpeg source into the relevant
directories of the mplayer source. I don't like this approach (and yes,
I actually dislike static linking at all) so I've made symlinks to the
corresponding directories in my real ffmpeg source directory.
