yes, exactly

and iam happy to revert more of it if there are users who need the
specific part and developers who are willing to help maintain it but
maintaince should be fe fairly little work. I just dont want to burden
us with something that noone actually uses ...

Rewriting code that is poorly written but fully understood is good.

then the original author, trying to rewrite it will not make it better.
