sorry if my attempt at sarcasm went over your head.

however, symlinking libraries in such a way is imo libtool wannabe
behaviour.

I do not know of any build tool other than libtool that does such a
thing (because I very much dislike such nonsense, so I do notice when
it happens), but feel free to show me an example of one that does.

btw, I am subscribed to all the autotools lists (procmail forwards
the messages to the 'autohell' mbox) and do occassionally provide
patches for those "abominations".  just because I'm a bit masochistic
in my understanding that they are not going away does not mean I
wish 7k lines of shell and dependencies on nonstandard m4 and perl
to spread to every software project.  fact is, I probably abhor the
stuff more than even you, Rich.
