Just a quick note: you should be able to bootstrap gcc 3.4.3 on that
system without any trouble (I use it on a RHEL3 Altix regularly).  If
you have the opportunity to upgrade the system to RHEL4, it comes with
gcc 3.4.3 out of the box.

You might also check to see if the Intel compiler (icc) is installed
in /opt, though I have no idea if it can be used for ffmpeg.
