you're right, it does

/usr/include/sys/byteorder.h:#define    BE_16(x)        BMASK_16(x)
/usr/include/sys/byteorder.h:#define    BE_16(x)        BSWAP_16(x)

when i do gcc -E it yields:

au_headers_length = ((((buf) & 0xff) << 8) | (((buf) >> 8) & 0xff));
