Double checked with Alan Curry

the difference between non reg'allocated and hand allocated is around 1%
for gcc-4.0, I'll check later on gcc-4.1

This patch removes asm() for gcc-3.3 and gcc-3.4 fsf in order to have it
build and let everything in place for gcc-4.x
