I think I did not state my point clearly enough, then.
I did not want to mean that every program using lavf has to reimplement
What I think is that a simple, smaller, program has to be ran before
ffmpeg (or a program using lavf) to setup the video device.

I dayly use a number of programs using video4linux(2) (some of them are
based on lavf, others are not), and ffmpeg is only one of them. In my
opinion, replicating the video4linux setup code in every one of those
programs would be useless. Instead, I have a very small and simple
program that allows me to setup the device (setting up the device and
capturing video are, in my opinion, two different things, and should be
done by two different programs).
That said, this is just my humble opinion... And I am not even the
maintainer of grab.c.
