It's unfeasible, for VLC and xine that relies on plugin-based architectures. 
Or rather, you lose the main advantage of such plugin architectures by 
linking ffmpeg statically.

I know that at least in the case of xine I can gain considerably more by 
fixing the current plugin loading, but as this situation is getting more 
attention, I'm trying to improve on this front, too.
