I supposed so myself, that's why I moved to the second solution from the start 
(the idea of staticising it I wasn't liking at all).

The result is that both libavcodec and libavformat in my local copy have 
EXPORTED_{AVCODEC,AVFORMAT} and EXPORTED_{AVCODEC,AVFORMAT}_PUBLIC, the 
latter using default visibility, always, and the first using protected 
visibility for libavcodec and default for everything else.
