Has the level of "ordinary" users dropped so low that replacing one
file with another is beyond their abilities?

That would take a little more work.  It should still be possible if the
distributor honours the lgpl.

I'm not arguing against you.  On the contrary, I was pointing out that
making selected files gpl does not stop them being used with non-gpl
apps.
