BTW what about something like this:

    component=$(echo $1 | sed -e 's/s$//' | tr "A-Z" "a-z")

    echo "  --disable-${component}s        disables all ${component}s"
    echo "  --enable-${component}=NAME     enables $component NAME"

}

The only limitation is that the output is not aligned, we could use
printf from the coreutils for implementing that.
