Indeed it does.  Thanks.  Appears to be the limitation of the MLP
decoder mentioned by Baptiste in the ticket (namely that it cannot
downsample to 2 channels).  I would argue that the error message is
misleading, but that's academic I suppose.  Thanks for the suggestion
and help.
