Because you as developer all build your own optimized version of things doesn't mean granny has time and will to rebuild her OS components so it won't crash on her.

Haiku, and many GNU/Linux distros still ship with generix x86 binaries that are intended to work fine on all intel compatible hardware, and still go faster when possible through optimized routines.
